I always love finding blogs of my favorite artists sharing their creative process. Whether it’s on Flickr or on a Forum. It’s just nice to know they’re not so full of themselves that they are willing to give us the inside story of how they do their work. Unfortunately I can’t share the images of my work in this post but I will do my best to tell the story of how I create my work. 1. Begin with the ending in mind. / First, I get the idea. It’s usually spurred on by a photo or maybe an artist. Even subject matter. I read something the other day from another artist, he said: “Always have an idea, a story that you want to capture before you put pencil to paper.” This is what I try to do. The sketches that end up being full finished pieces are usually the ones with an idea or story behind them, no matter how small. / So that’s exactly what I do. Visualize what I want to see in my end product. Close my eyes and think and focus on the intension of the piece. Sometimes this takes some research for reference to find out what something looks like exactly. But if you’re doing something that you know there is no reference for it, just let your mind go with the flow. 2. Thumbnails: 90% Planning 10% Execution. / I almost always do thumbnails. 9 out of 10 times I do this. Especially with an idea that is complex and will be time consuming. I will do maybe 2 or 3 thumbnails of an idea. Usually to plan out composition. I try to apply the “Golden Ratio” where ever I can. With all my stuff there is usually a character or characters featured in the artwork. So I plan out where I want them. Review it over a few days. Then decide whether it’s worth completing. If I’ve done the process correctly up to this point then I go to step 3. My tip for composition: Learn the Golden Ratio and know what colors work together. Symmetry is overrated. 3. Scanning and Correcting. / I scan in my thumbnail which is usually about a greeting card size. Blow it up in photoshop to print it out at A3 size. If there is anything that I want changed that will help me when drawing the finished version, I will change it in the drawing with my Wacom Tablet. I can also quickly check if the colors I had in mind work or not. Contrast is very important when considering the how effective your Composition will end up being. The image at A3 gets printed out as two A4’s. I stick them together and get out my custom light table to sketch out the proportions on a clean piece of A3 paper. Tip: Remove what is not necessary. A great Zen practice. 4. Detail and Drawing. / This is definitely one of the fun parts of creating my artwork. Sometimes I add more objects or take away objects. I pretty much fill in all the detail I want to be featured in the final piece that will be colored up in Photoshop. I use a 0.5 Tech Pencil for everything I pencil. My tip for penciling: Make every line count, put intension behind every single line 5. Inking. / This is time consuming, but again very fun. I sometimes don’t use any ink, like in my “Fairytale Christmas” piece. But I decide at this point whether the line work needs ink or not. If the pencil lines are not good enough then I will ink. I use fibre tip ink markers of various sizes. But I generally try to keep all my line widths/weights the same. This is part of how I see anime drawn, so this is what I emulate. It’s appealing and neat to my eyes. My best tip for inking would be: Don’t press down hard. Glide. 6. Scanning Again. / Yes. Again scanning. I have to scan in two parts as I have an A4 scanner. This is tricky to keep each side of the page inline with eachother. Once in photoshop I try my best to line up the two parts of the page and finally I’m left with an A3 image. I lift up the levels of the image to darken the inked lines and to lower the grey scale. I’m then left with cleaning up an ink smudges or finger prints that might have not been rubbed out when I finished inking. My tip for scanning big pages on an A4 scanner: Use masking tape. 7. The Coloring In. / I love coloring. I use a A5 Wacom Tablet to color my linework in photoshop. / I set my brush to a solid line with pressure sensitivity on. So my lines go from thick to thin depending on how hard I press down. Not much to say here, except that I try to keep things simple. I use two tone coloring first and if I really feel like doing more I’ll add a third tone. Thats on the shadowing side. I then concentrate on any back light or highlighting tones, if needed. It usually helps depending on the scene. Again my coloring style emulates anime coloring. What I do sometimes is if theres a character I want to stand out more than others is to use gradients over various areas. It’s subtle but effective and not overwelming. In “Spirits & Demons” I went with a simple color tone bing pink of all colors. I’ve never done an Illustration that used a lot of pink. The reason I did this was to create a feeling of emptiness, slow motion down. It was an image with lots of things going on so I wanted to contrast that with simple use of color by making the image predominantly pink tones. The image also has a white background which is ultimate contrast. Again if I added a background of lets say, Clouds. It would just make the image far too busy. But if I made those clouds lower in coloration than the subject matter that would probably been okay. My tip for coloring: Choose your colors carefully. I do one more thing in all my images. Once everything is flattened into one Layer. I saturate the colors. Then I use Color Balance to add more Red or Blue to the image. It gives it a more unified tone. It’s all about tones. Hope you enjoyed this and that it helps you in some way.

Planning a solo exhibition in Melbourne, Australia – opening night in March. Any thoughts on this artist statement for the show….note: I have never written an artist statement and am pretty nervous about it….? / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / “Angels, Gods and Elements” is a collection of works depicting mythological and fanciful characters. The collection demonstrates my ability to utilise the inspiring qualities of colour and is intended to impact the audience and spark the imagination. I have demonstrated an interest in colour from a young age. Over the years, I have become appreciative of the ability for colour to be vibrant, expressive and evoke emotion. When I work with colour, I am reminded that those chosen for a particular piece must work together to illustrate the story behind the work and capture the attention of the observer. Self-taught, I specialise in oil pastel on craft wood (MDF). Each piece produced is initiated with research and deciding on a story to be illustrated. A piece is considered complete when the character of the illustrated story and their precise nature has been truthfully captured.

Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / ...
Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / - This is my favourite design to date and, as I was rummaging through the house the other day I stumbled across an acrylic paint set. / So I popped down the shop, purchased some 45×60 canvas’ and decided it was time to convert my art from digital to reality. I decided to take some photos of the process and as it stands, I believe I am 1/4 of the way through. Enjoy. —-—-—-—-- / To start, I hopped into Photoshop and made my canvas the same size as the ‘real’ canvas. In this case, 45cm x 60cm, with 300dpi. Then I dragged my vector image across and resized it to fit the Photoshop canvas. Unfortunately I don’t have a massive printer, so I printed the image across 4 pieces of paper, (there was a little bit of the image missing on each page) aligning each page with the reference corner; eg. top left image on the page aligns with top left corner, bottom right aligns to bottom right corner etc. Then, I printed a colour version of the center image, where most of the ‘action’ happens. I will use this image for colour reference, and also tracing later on. Then came the question of how to get that design onto the canvas. Remembering back to primary school, I used a highly advanced technique (WARNING – NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED) called…...TRACING. Told you it was advanced! I coloured the back of the main colour image, and then, using my 4 pages as a guide, I traced the image directly onto the canvas. Ooooooh! Then I posed for this really cool shot. Then next bit was to get my paints out and start colouring in the areas. Even though I will later cover over the edges with thick black outlines, I wanted to be as neat as possible and take my time on this artwork. I tend to usually rush things in real life so it was a good test! When I paint, I have a habit of pouring out way too much paint then I need. Today was no different. I’m sure I will learn to perfect this wasting technique as the days go on. I was drawing/painting for about 2 hours and I’m quite proud of how far I have got already. I’m also very happy with where it is going, and it may not look like much in the final drawing SO FAR, but in my opinion it’s on track! I’m not sure how long it will take to finish it, probably another 4 days when I get the time, but I will put up another Journal entry asap! This is where we leave it for today, but stay tuned…I will finish this! If you like this art piece, please view it here > /

On Saturday, 2nd May 2009 Midori Furze is holding a art workshop called Make Up Your Mind using lipsticks and other makeup. Its going to be at Manly, home of the Manly Arts Festival held in September of each year. So to compliment this awesome occasion, on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 you’ll be encouraged to create your own masterpiece with lipstick and other types of makeup at home or wherever you are that day. Paint and draw with makeup, just like you did (go on, admit it!!) when you were a child! While its not necessary to dig out your Mum’s best most favourite makeup, you’re not to use traditional art products (paint, pencil, etc). Here is a groovy example… available as artwork and as tshirts!! / After you have created your incredible masterpieces, upload them to our new group… Make Up Your Mind. Don’t forget to have fun!!!! Happy Bubbling :D

I decided to order the new Canon EF-S 15-85 IS lens after reading about it, and seeing some great results from this lens, especially when used with the 7D. I was originally planning on getting this lens with my 7D, but I couldn’t find anyone selling the kit at the time, so I bought the 18-135 IS kit instead. While I did like the 18-135 IS lens, I miss the faster and silent Ultrasonic Autofocus motor (USM) and I also wanted something wider then 18mm (29mm equivalent). I was thinking about getting a 10-22, but I didn’t think I would really shoot that wide, and I liked the focal range of the 24-105 IS when I had my 5DMkII, I also looked at the 17-55 IS, but wasn’t that impressed with the build quality, and since I mainly shoot landscapes, I don’t really need f/2.8. I will be adding either a 70-200 f/4 IS or a 100-400 IS to complement this lens. The build quality of this lens is better then the 18-135 IS, and would have to be one of Canon’s best non L series lens. The zoom and manual focusing rings are both tight, and have a nice feel to them when turning them, they have a fluid feel to them which adds to the quality of the lens. The lens is not to big, but may feel that way to someone that is moving up from the 18-55 IS kit lens which is smaller and lighter. It is smaller then the 18-135 IS lens, but feels a bit heavier. The lens feels well matched to the 7D, and makes a nice combo (The lens is also available as a part of a kit with the 7D). The lens extends when zooming, and this lens uses a Duo cam system (2 zoom rings) while the 18-135 IS just used a single tube which I kind of preferred, but my copy of the 18-135 IS did show some zoom creeping after only a month of use. The autofocus is smooth and silent, this lens uses a ring type Ultrasonic focusing motor, and it is very quick to focus. This lens has full time manual focusing (you don’t need to switch the lens into manual focus mode to manually focus) but I find the manual focus ring to be a bit smaller then I would like (or that I have been use to) it’s similar to the focus ring on the EF-S 10-22. This lens also has a distance scale window, but no Infrared scale. The Image Stabiliser is very quiet and you can barely hear it when it engages. Canon says it will give you up to 4 f/stops of extra handholdability, but I will have to test the lens out in some low light conditions to confirm how effective it really is when I write my mini review after using the lens for a while. Overall, the lens seems pretty good (though a tad bit expensive) but it seems pretty sharp, and the colours and contrast seems good from the few test shots I’ve taken with the new lens. I am still waiting for the lens hood to arrive, and I will write about the new hood when I write my review. In the meantime, keep a lookout at my folio as I add photos taken with the new lens. Here is the lens on my 7D: UPDATE: The lens hood arrived today, I had to source one from the US because nobody seems to have them. This would have to be the best built lens hood (for standard lenses anyway) Canon have designed this hood with a textured finish which should be more resistant to scratches then the other lens hoods with the “Smooth finish” The new 100mm Macro IS L Lens hood also features the new textured finish to it’s lens hood, so it looks like this will be the standard for all new lens hoods.
