In researching the origins of bandanas as headwear, I located information about their first uses in America. At eleven years old, enslaved girls were required to begin wearing a white bandana. This was to denote them as mature women, with all pertaining responsibilities. I painted Eleven to restore some dignity to the memory of these young girls. They should be remembered with respect for their strength, power, and accomplishments.
