Maschere dell’artista was featured in First Things Group 2009. For the longest time I dreamed of a wild adventure in Italy. In April 2008 that dream became an extraordinary reality. In Venezia (Venice) I was most keen to explore the art of creating maschere (masks). So we bought books, took lots of photos and explored many mask shops, talking to master craftsmen as they worked. This handsome but shy artist kindly let us take his photo as he quietly created masks for his quaint little shop. He told us that most of his business came from making masks and props for local theatre companies. He was a delight to meet and in the short time we spent with him, we learnt about the true art of mask making and it didn’t cost us a cent. From what I understand, the face is first made in clay and then a plaster mold of the clay face is made. Soaked paper is then pasted inside the plaster mold and left to dry. Once dry, the rough edges of the mask are trimmed then decorated. maschere dell’artista – masks of the artist, tells the story of a master craftsman at work. On the far right we can see paper pieces, in the middle is a glue solution and on the left is paper soaking in water as the artist works carefuly with the mold to create his work of heart. Students studying art at Florence’s university (Itlay) are often found replicating famous paintings on the streets to fund their studies.
The day becomes sad, everything becomes dark, the feelings come from deep inside, then suddenly you feel the melancholia. The image was edited to be a little dark and the tones where bit mixed so that the feeling in the photo gets stronger. All the editing was done in 16 bits/channel, saved and tiff and wdp (for archive), for sending to RedBubble the image was saved in progressive jpeg w/ 3 scans and at maximum quality.
