Who's the Artist?

Standing, looking at an artwork in a gallery recently I found myself asking, who is the artist? At one level the answer is obvious – the person who created the object. But the tricky bit is they may or may not be the person/s who decided it was art. A recent exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia of Aboriginal art is a case in point. The early objects on exhibit became “art” when a curator determined they were. Before that they were objects the community created to give meaning to their lives. There were no artists just the people making the works. And, I will confess here, I find the idea of being an artist a little bit diminishing. It is possible to be a lawyer because other people aren’t one (I know at least that I am not a lawyer). But if I decide I am an artist does that mean I wasn’t one before or that you aren’t one? The truth is we are all artists or at least have the potential be. And so being an artist is really little different than being human. At least if we allow ourselves to be fully human. And whether the things we make are considered to be “art” or not, I guess we will have to leave that to the critics. Martin (aka Pilgrim)

Hello and welcome to all Red Bubblers in this group! I am really excited about reading, exploring and debating artistic pieces of work that are so typical of so many talented writers on RB. A couple of rules: (1) Let’s try to keep it to 1-2 downloads per person on a daily basis to allow the work to be viewed and not flood the group page please. / (2) No stories please these are welcomed at Damien’s group – ‘Spherical Spheres’ / (3) Have fun and be as creative as you like / (4) When commenting or feeding back remember to be sensitive – artists are sensitive people! / (5) Any queries about the group – send me a Bubblemail and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Here’s to an unfolding magical journey of creativity and the inspiration that comes with being part of such a wonderful group of people! Enjoy! / Suzanne

RedBubble Post Card - Everyone's an artist

Hello fellow bubblers, I thought it might be useful if we tried to give you an insight into the ‘mind of RedBubble’ – every now and then. To give you an understanding of what makes us tick. One of the key ideas underpinning RedBubble is that ‘everyone’s an artist’. Let me restate part of our very first journal post “People are inherently creative. Deep down, most of us love to come up with new ideas, express who we are, or take a different perspective on the world around us. This is particularly true of children. Remember chalk on the footpath, crayon on the walls, or a painting stuck proudly to the fridge with a magnet. Kids love stories, they love learning about new things, they ask obvious yet somehow overlooked questions. So why don’t many of us focus on our creative interests as adults? Is there something about the process of growing up that changes us, that convinces us to be serious and sensible? Do we lose the ability to be creative? Or does it just get buried amidst the responsibilities, worries and priorities of adult life? Look closer, though, and you’ll see sparks of creativity in adults everywhere. Since starting our RedBubble journey, we’ve been amazed at how many of our close friends have “confessed” to a secret creative hobby, a little spark of creativity that few else know about. Look at the statistics and the picture is clearer still. Over 2.5 million Australians regularly take part in some sort of creative or cultural activity. Almost 90% do this entirely for free, for the simple enjoyment of it. A fortunate few earn a living from it, but most keep their creative spark alive in their own time and without sharing it with the world. RedBubble was founded with a burning desire to improve this situation. And there are some major social and technological trends helping us out.“ We openly want to embrace a wide variety of material on RedBubble, from a wide variety of people – from professional artists to emerging artists to people just discovering their artistic side. We don’t want to place more limits or barriers in the way of people – life has enough barriers – so we’ve tried to keep RedBubble as open as possible. This is why we haven’t placed any upload limits on the site and why we don’t vet content before it’s published. We’ve recently received feedback from the community that such an open approach has meant people might be encouraged to post ‘anything’ to RedBubble. Our thinking is that RedBubble should be the place for your best work and over the next short while we’re looking to update the site to further encourage this behaviour. But we don’t want RedBubble to become an elite only site – we don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. - Peter

TUTORIAL: Adding Buttons To Your Profile Page
by Patricia Montgomery*I recently had several requests for instructions on how to add buttons like the ones in my profile...
I recently had several requests for instructions on how to add buttons like the ones in my profile. Rather than send individual bubblemail messages, I’m posting it in my journal in case someone else would like to add buttons to their RB profile. BUTTON INSTRUCTIONS Tip: print out this page and put it beside the computer before you start. You can make your own buttons or you can use a site called ButtonGenerator. If you decide to use this site and not to pay for a membership, you will need to add a link back to the site. I made all of mine 125X26 to give you some idea of the size of the ones on my page. This size allowed 3 buttons side-by-side. Make all your buttons and then save them in a folder on your computer. Then you will need to upload each button to your RB image gallery and use the “Hide” feature so that no one sees them but you. Once you have them uploaded you will need to right-click on each one to get the url address html code in the properties box. Example: http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/size:ularge/view:main/1407403-1-autumn-button.jpg Then go to “Edit Your Profile” to copy the image html code AND the tag html code – it will look like this (without the spaces): ! http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/size:ularge/view:main/1407403-1-autumn-button.jpg ! : http://www.redbubble.com/people/patmonty/art/everything/tags/autumn [REMEMBER NO SPACES. I had to add spaces so you could see the html code. If I had not added spaces, the button would have appeared in the journal instead of the code.] The last word in the html code is the “tag” word. In the example above it is autumn. You will need to put one space between each set of button html code. If you have a lot of buttons the language is long and wraps around forever. But with one space between each button html code, the buttons will sit next to other and then wrap to the next line. Now you will need to add the tag word to each of your images that will correspond to the buttons. Happy Button Making! I am certainly no expert at making tee shirts. I know there are others out there who are the real experts. So I’m just going to share a few helpful hints that came out of my struggles to get two tee designs uploaded on RB. Here’s what I did: Opened Photoshop Elements (or any other image editing program) and set up a new empty page. Set the dimensions to 2400 width x 3200 height with a transparent background. IMPORTANT NOTE: If the background is not transparent, it will not work! If you are one pixel off on the dimensions, it will not work! You cannot transpose the pixels either (NOT 3200 width x 2400 height) as it will not work! Transferred (copied) an image to the blank/transparent background. Added text to complete my design. Saved image as a .png file. NOTE: Other file extensions (such as .jpg) will not work! It must be a .png file! Uploaded to Redbubble with a default color and a default style. This will be the color and style (short-sleeve, long sleeve, etc.) you want to display on the page to showcase your design. NOTE: If you forget to choose the defaults, it will not work! Should I have a contest to see who can guess all the things I did wrong when I first tried to upload a tee shirt design? LOL! Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have problems or further questions. Have a blessed day! / Patricia OTHER TUTORIALS BY PATRICIA Add Buttons To Your Profile Page How to make a calendar Downsizing those example images on your profile page Adding Examples (Card, Laminated, Matted, etc) To Your Profile Add photos to your profile description Adding emphasis to your text Emphasis with light gray text

Hello all! I’m constantly inspired by the people I meet via RedBubble. There are so many interesting and inspirational people involved in RedBubble … and I’d like to help get more of our stories out. As one way of doing this I’ve started (today) a series of ‘artist profiles’. The guidelines for these profiles are very broad. People involved in RedBubble write about other people involved in RedBubble. The profiles should be short (500 words) and interesting. The first profile is on the wonderfully talented Tom Godfrey So if there’s someone on RedBubble who inspires you – and you’d like to write a short piece on them please get in touch with Peter.

On occasion Mr. Axford has stirred the bubble cauldron with what some have coined ‘elitism’ due to the high standards that he expects of himself, but also from those around him, or at least a spark from the ‘photographer’ to understand commercial quality and what it means to the professional. Steve’s pursuit of the photographic eye has turned his attentions to some incredible scenes from below the equator. Jungles, volcanoes, poverty, sulfur mines. Scenes that are varied but most have some tinge of sadness, people studies from Indonesia show exactly how lucky we are… that makes me sad… tall growth forests that are being demolished… that makes me sad… hard working men emerging from massive green/yellow clouds of sulfur… that’s confronting! It’s the fungi and the volcanoes that Steve photographs which show a natural contrast in the delicacy and ferocity of our natural world. He’s even been known to do some conceptual portraiture, which he is better at than he would admit. As a big fan of the ‘volcanolotographer’ and the very competent (yet tough) co-moderator of the Wild Nature Group I interviewed Steve about what got him going, a sad story, what keeps him going and what he likes to see. Thanks to Steve for pouring his heart out… tripper! 1. Why do you do what you do…? / Do you mean why I take photos and why I take them of volcanoes, travel, people and fungi and things? A long story really, but here goes. / / Way back at the end of the last century – that would be about 10 years ago – my then wife, Pat, had just died of breast cancer and I was at a bit of a loss as to how to cope, when a travel brochure appeared in my letterbox. It was for adventure holidays, and among other destinations was one entitled “Volcanoes and Dragons”. I thought, that sounds different, so I booked myself on a 3 week adventure holiday traveling by fishing boat, bicycle and bimo from Flores to Bali. I didn’t even have a decent camera, so that bit comes a bit later. / / At that time I had been feeling a bit sick with stomach problems, so, just before I left for the holiday, I got a referral to see a specialist about it. I thought it was probably just a stress thing after Pat’s death; but apparently not. It seemed I had Hepatitis C. Now this was not good news as Hep C in 1998 was not a curable disease. / It seemed there was little I could do about it so I determined to carry on regardless and off I went to the volcanoes and dragons (the dragons being Komodo dragons). Since it was a malarial area, I thought that I’d best take some prophylactics and my doctor gave me some pills called Lariam. Lariam is out of favour now because it can cause some nasty psychiatric side effects, but the drug companies downplayed this at the time. It was a once a week pill and I had to take one a week before I left, which I did. A couple of days later I had an intense panic attack, which I thought was due to my general state of depression at the time and nervousness about traveling while sick. I recovered after a couple of days and flew to Jakarta. There were riots there at the time due to the monetary crisis which was expected to put 20 million people out of work in Java alone (can you believe that – the population of Australia!!), so I stayed in an airport hotel. I’d had my second lariam tablet the day I left, so it was working nicely when I arrived in Jakarta. That was some night. I started to “freak out” (I think this is the correct technical term) in my room and I felt I just had to get with some people or I would go mad. The journey from my room to the bar was terrifying as I felt totally lost and panicked the whole way. Eventually I found the bar and managed to relax by talking to the barman. He was a student who had had to quit studying when the monetary crisis hit. He traveled 5 hours, each way, to get to work every day. I was stunned and fascinated at the same time. I wanted to learn more about how people really lived in places like Java so maybe there where the people thing began, though I suspect the seeds were deeper than that. / / Anyway, I survived the night with the help of a couple of beers and a friendly barman, but then I had a long day’s travel the next day, first to Bali, and then on to Maumere in Flores. I was having panic attacks again, but managed to hold myself together for the flight to Bali. After waiting for 8 hours in Denpasar airport, they finally located a plane to take us to Maumere. I was starting to feel panicky again as I walked out to the plane. It was a Merpati airlines flight, though the plane was almost unidentifiable as all the paint seemed to be worn off and it was mostly down to bare metal. On board the seat I was in wouldn’t stop tilting as it was broken and the window had holes, both through the inner AND outer panes. Not surprisingly, we couldn’t fly above 3,500m as the pressurisation didn’t work; nor did the air conditioning so the plane was still very hot. / / Why am I talking about this flight? Well, perhaps it was because it was so intense and I was resigned to my life coming to an untimely and abrupt end on the side of an Indonesian mountain, ........ but then there was the volcano. We were flying through clouds when suddenly there was a clear patch. We were flying at about 3,500m, which put us 500m above a 3,000m volcano with the biggest crater I have ever seen. It was Tambora. The crater is 1km deep and 5km across and we were flying right along the edge of a 1000m cliff. I was suddenly no longer depressed or having a panic attack, I was just mesmerised. Check it out on Google Maps – it’s on Sumbawa in Indonesia and do a search on the eruption in 1816 that created that crater; it makes the Pinatubo eruption look like a fire cracker. The rest of flight was blissfully uneventful and I arrived safely on Flores to meet up with the tour group. On the first night the tour leader asked if anyone was taking lariam, because it was known to make people really paranoid. That was a huge relief to be told that, as I had thought I was genuinely going mad and this was “as good as it gets”. I stopped the lariam and the holiday was great and I had been reinfected with the travel bug and caught a new one, the volcano bug. / / The next 18 months was probably the worst part of my life. I was sick with Hepatitis and then sick with the newly developed treatment. I really did think that life as I knew may have ended and all I could do was just keep going and remember a line from Maxim Gorky’s writings – “Nothing lasts forever”. If it’s bad it will end, and if it’s good, appreciate it while it lasts. At the end of 6 months of chemotherapy (my last day was 31/12/1999) and a couple of months of recovery …..... I was cured!!!!! Now this was something to celebrate and to contemplate what really makes me tick. Travel was the first thing I planned. I went to Thailand, India and Burma that year and haven’t looked back since. I also bought my first digital camera and discovered that I could take the occasional good photograph – mainly because I found interesting things to photograph rather than having any wonderful artistic talent to be able to create something beautiful out of the very ordinary. I’ve never been able to do that. / / So that covers the travel, people and volcanoes, what about the fungi? Well, that’s just something that has been a passion of mine since I was a boy. I always loved searching for field mushrooms which were a popular meal in my family. Then, when I was a little older, I discovered magic mushrooms. I can’t say I liked eating them as they gave me a hell-of-a gut ache, but I loved searching for them and some of my friends were only to willing to take them off my hands. After I got my digital camera, and would go on bushwalks by myself I found that fungi actually made quite good subjects and there were many more varieties than just the grey or the golden ones. This became an excuse to go roaming around wet forests in Autumn and winter. / / Actually the photography is one big excuse to do what I love doing – travel, meeting people that seem so different but are really the same as us, climbing volcanoes and probably most of all, exploring the old growth forests of Australia and elsewhere. / / 2. What is your favourite subject? / Fungi – and volcanoes, and people, and – really anything that captures my imagination. I love macro photography because there are so many surprises and I love travel because it always stretches my imagination. 3. Volcanoes… which ones… why and how… how close have you been? / Not nearly as many as I would like. Krakatoa, Papandayan, Welirang, Bromo, Semeru, Keli Mutu all in Indonesia. Nyiragongo in Africa and Yasur in Vanuatu. Why? I happened to meet up with a couple of volcanologists who run volcano tours. First I traveled with them, and now I work with them – check it out http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/ Come along with me to climb 3 volcanoes (not too big) in Java in April or July. It’s a lot of fun and you get photo opportunities that even make me look good. Hope you don’t mind the plug. 4. What does quality mean to you? / An interesting question and I presume you are talking about photography. To me it means some real care and skill has gone into the production of the photograph rather than most of the effort into the marketing. It’s like seeing the difference between a David Attenborough documentary and the Funniest Home Videos. Both probably get similar ratings, but the Attenborough stuff is quality. Now some home movies are quality too, because the people who took them put in the effort to learn how to do it properly and have the talent to do it, even if they didn’t have the odd million or two to spend on the gear. I haven’t seen one of those on Funniest Home Videos. Quality isn’t anything to do with marketing. 5. Describe your love of nature… / Shit, describe it?. Nature is everything really. I think some people see man and nature as two separate things, but we are as much a part of it as the lions in Africa, or the fungi in a Tassie rainforest. I can’t understand how people can just stand by and allow so much to be destroyed, to gain so little. If we could bring back the Tasmanian Tiger I’m sure almost everyone would be overjoyed, but try to tell them that when the killed the last of them, We do know better now, but still we only seem to worry when the endangered species have big brown eyes like baby seals. It makes no sense to me. It’s like letting you fingers drop off because for just a moment you don’t need them.

We all have artists on our watchlist that we think are wonderful, but who may not get the recognition they deserve or their work just gets passed by in the influx of daily work here on Redbubble. I would like to form a journal entry here that serves the purpose of bringing awareness and traffic to these underappreciated artists, so my proposal is that anyone who wished to come into this journal and post 1 or 2 links to artists on their watchlists whom they absolutely adore. This idea was originally begun by JULIE LANGFORD so please be sure to visit her journal HERE too for more amazing work! Also feel free to link to their images as well, and try not to repeat the same artists as have already been mentioned and promoted. This way we can get the word out about so many of these tremendous hidden talents here at Redbubble. I have two artists I would now like to introduce to you that I have on my watchlist: David Linkenauger and Shelley Spillenaar David is one of my fellow home state photographers and takes really nice waterscape images, and Shelley in my mmind has a wonderful eye and a keen sense of capturing the right moment with animals. Please go take a look at the wonderful work of these two artists, and if you like what you see be sure to tell them so and maybe even add them to your watchlist! Also, be sure to scan your own watchlist for someone who you think deserves more attention than they are currently getting in the world of Redbubble! Let’s make this a huge success!

I recommend printing these instructions so that you have them handy for reference. It is easier than switching back and forth to this screen. Click on “my bubble”. Click on “art” (on the 2nd row of links – not the top one). You should see “My Art” page – this is the page where you can edit your pics. Choose your photo and click on “Show Public View”. Click “Buy/Preview”. (Note: You won’t actually be buying, only previewing) Choose the card or frame of your choice. Make your mat or color selections, etc. When the image of your framed photo appears on the screen, right click on the photo. A pop-up box will appear. Right click on the photo. In the pop-up box, click on “properties” (at the bottom). The “Properties” box will pop up – highlight the address (URL) . {Click & drag will highlight the entire address} IMPORTANT: Be sure to highlight the entire address – only two lines will be visible, but if a third line of the address hidden, be sure you drag down to highlight all lines of the address. Next copy the URL address. Press Ctrl-C (press the control key and the “C” key at the same time). You won’t see anything happen on the screen, but that is fine. Click OK to close the “Properties” box. Open your profile or a bubblemail (or any other location in RB where you want your image to be visible). Press Ctrl-V (press control key and the “V” key at the same time). You should see the URL address. Put an exclamation point ( ! ) in front of the URL address and another one at the end of the URL address. It should be similar to this example, but without the spaces: ! http://images-0.redbubble.com/img/art/cropped/size:xsmall/view:main/993259-1-yellowstone-in-winter.jpg ! Remember, NO SPACES before or after the exclamation point (!) – the beginning of the URL should look like this: !http:// The end of the URL address should look like this: winter.jpg! NOTE: These will be full-size copies of the images. If you would like to have smaller images (see my profile for examples) that don’t take up so much room, see my other tutorial on how to resize the images. Have a blessed day! / Patricia OTHER TUTORIALS BY PATRICIA Add Buttons To Your Profile Page Making Links How to make a calendar Add photos to your profile description How to downsize example photos on your profile page

Our Book is Published!!!!!

/ / She Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore / A short story by iAN Derrick with illustrations by Karin Taylor (me)!! Karin’s storefront iAN’s storefront This has been an amazing experience to be a part of….an enormous thank you to Matt Mawson who has tirelessly and generously worked over the past 2 days to bring this little book into being….. I could never have done it without you Matt! And of course a huge thank you to the amazing writer and friend of mine, one of those great Aussie characters that just keeps on keeping on, keeps on getting better with age…. that is iAN Derrick I first met iAN through a journal Matt wrote about one of iAN’s books, and since that day, we sorta hit it off….. I talked to iAN about my father and he also was inspired to write another short story called Understanding Harry and correct me if i’m wrong, but i think he may have been inspired to write a story that reflected some of the goings on with Matt’s four legged friend also. One day I got an email from the amazing iAN, saying although he thought my father should be the one to tell and publish his own stories, he’d had a little idea and brought it to life in Understanding Harry and not long after this i received a second email saying that he’d done it again, but i would have to wait til the morning when he loaded the story to red bubble, and he and I and hubby all savoured the moment….....waiting with baited breath, until upon waking in the morning two days ago, I was thrilled to discover this wonderful story had been written. A story about my characters…involved a certain Mrs T….but i will tell you no more, as it’s a must read…and you can read it over here She Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore Thank you iAN and Thank you Matt i am eternally grateful

I have a confession; I used to flick over Paul Louis Villani’s artwork mainly because he was already so popular. Then he started posting his train and house series of photography and loved the whole series , then he started with the inspirations series and I couldn’t ignore it anymore, anyone who has a love of guitars and musicians like that has got to get my vote for All time Great Guy. Paul’s work is as varied and it is stunning and original. But when he started posting his writings I had to send him a BubbleMail asking if he could tell me in advance when he was putting them up so I wouldn’t, because he kept stealing all the readers. Paul has the knack of writing poetry that draws people too him, he shares his pain and wonder with his reader and they respond in kind. His recent offerings IMMERSE AND SURRENDER and Surgery Of A Soul are two of the most read poems on the Bubble. I asked Paul to expose himself even more for the Red Bubble audience and also to let everyone know of some of his marvelous achievements. Like a true artist laid his soul bare and had a lot to share. What attracted you to Red Bubble? After being part of a few group and solo exhibitions you tend to search for alternate ways that get your work “out there” and also up “for sale”. A gallery employee had asked me to check out Red Bubble exactly for those two reasons, the rest is history! The initial attraction to the sight has been quickly overwhelmed by the feeling of involvement and community. I’m not to most social of people and actually enjoy hiding under rocks and being somewhat anti-social but after I got up the courage to go to my first Melbourne Meet up (organized by the multi-talent Jo O’Brien) I’ve really embraced the bubbles online artistic community and am less inclined to stay in the background! LOL! What were your original expectations and the reality if now? Hmmmm, I guess I kind of covered that above but I’ll elaborate… / I came here without expectations… I’m sure like all other artists in the world, I scoured the internet looking for options (affordable options!), Red Bubble blew me away for the sheer fact that if you sell, you and the bubble make money, cool! You see, in a gallery environment you pay for the lease, invitations, opening night necessities and then on top of that upwards of 30% commission on all sales. Not that that’s a bad thing, that’s life but you can see why the bubble became a shining light! Everyone’s work is available to be viewed and purchased 24/7 365 days a year!! (Except when the elves are out crashing trolleys!) How has Red Bubble enriched you? Perhaps it’s the interaction with other like minded people that’s been most enriching for me. I’ve began to thrive on the discussion and points of view given by people in journals, forums and comments. I work (on call 24/7) in a sterile, time consuming corporate environment, my workplace doesn’t really know about my artistic life and I try to keep both very separate. The bubble is my release, an avenue where I’m not confined by rules and restrictions, a place where my individual artistic creations have a home and are surrounded by others works of art enjoying the same freedoms. That is enriching! Tells us something about your artistic CV and its highlights? Numerous group exhibitions, solo exhibitions both here in Oz and Internationally, winning a couple of awards last year, being nominated for an international art prize this year (more news about that soon!), being commissioned to supply artwork for the foyer and Outpatients area of a new medical facility in Western Victoria, having work published by a corporate company in their annual portfolio. Looking ahead I’ve got my final exhibition for the year happening in Sydney from the 7th to 18th November 2007 at the Global Gallery in Comber St Paddington. I’ll be flying up to Sydney on the 17th to be a part of a “meet the artist” day at the gallery from 2pm, so please if any NSW bubblers have got some spare time, come and say G’day, I’d love to meet you face to face!! I’m so looking forward to 2008! Mainly because of collaboration between Aleisha (Inktart Art), Jo O’Brien and myself that will culminate into an exhibition tentatively titled “Hidden Worlds”. Also, I will be having 3 of my “train” images on Display at the Beijing Contemporary Art Show in March. Tell us your Influences? I’ll give you a quick answer otherwise we’ll be here all day! / Please bear in mind that I’ve been a Musician / Photographer for most of my life so influences come from both styles and effect each diversely (I’m sure you know what I mean!!) Andre Segovia, Bob Dylan, Mauro Giuliani, Yngwie Malmsteen, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jeff Buckley, Queen, Slayer, The Doors, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Prince, Kiss, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Living Color, Vincent Pulo, Tolkien, Rage Against The Machine, Tim Buckley, Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Munch, Salvador Dali, Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol, Ken Kelly and Leonard Nimoy. Wordsmiths and Heavy Metal – you’ve gotta love that. - Danny

Why Artists Hate "Photographers" 101

Now, before all you real photographers come lunging at me with pitchforks and fiery torches, I want you to take note of the asterisks on the title. My beef is with the shutterbugs who flood these sites with everything they think qualifies as photography. I’m talking about the one’s who take pics at their kids birthday party, their dog or cat rolling around on the grass, the rustic old shack down the road, their wife or girlfriend stepping out of the shower(or some other equally unerotic pose), their vacation photos, etc. These are the one’s who take a picture of a bird on a wire, 10 different ways, and post them all. One shot of the old barn isn’t good enough. Why not take 20 more, get it from every damn angle. And post them all. How about the macro shot of the flower, always a banal treat. Oh, and don’t bother with that pesky focusing. Don’t want you to get slowed down. Now, I’m sure I’ll get replies like “Well, there’s just as many bad “artists”. This may be true, but it takes a lot longer to make a bad painting or drawing than it does a bad photograph. And you only can post one version of bad art. It matters not, because the bad art will never be seen, getting pushed out by 50 more bad photos. True, there are some serious photographers on these sights, one’s with knowledge of lighting, composition and color. One’s who have their own darkroom and equipment. One’s with serious commitment to their craft, and a discerning eye for what worked and what didn’t. But even their work gets buried under the schlock. If some of these digi-dummy’s would use more restraint and discrimination with their choices, maybe it wouldn’t be so hard to see the forest for the trees. If they thought to themselves “How can I put a fresh spin on this subject?” or “Should I bother, it’s been done to death?” , these sites would be a tad roomier. I made the mistake, when I first joined, of putting a few of these members on my watchlist. Now, I’m inundated every morning, with a new barrage of photographic excrement. I even tried taking them off the list, to no avail. It just keeps coming, like some Twilight Zone episode starring Pauly Shore. Moral of this story, is that I pick and chose after I see the work, now, and that the best place to show these pics, is at your next Christmas party. Digital cameras, the slide projectors of the new millenia.

Marilyn Monroe once said, “I’ve been on a calendar but I have never been on time…” I imagine, at the time she said this, how hectic her days were. I’m amazed she had time to spend on failed relationships. Then again, she was an artist and doing a job she loved. Not many of us are lucky to be spending most of their waking hours doing something they enjoy and are passionate about. So how does one maintain their creative passion whilst running a hectic lifestyle? I can only answer this question for myself. I spend 15 hours of my week doing a technical and non creative job which is “dag” boring and sterile just to pay the bills. For most people, a routine such as this would be enough. My creative muse is a demanding creature stabbing her devil – fork stilettos into the podgy areas of my brain if I become too complacent. She keeps my eyes open for small pockets of time where I can slip out a few creative urges here and there and I love it. I’ve always been open minded to artistic expression. The troubles I faced growing up made more sense to me in works of fiction, paintings, draws and images. So it’s quite difficult for me to ignore my creative urges. I’ve been lucky to find an outlet with my writing, which is mainly done on work resources. Not my fault, my creative muse makes me do it! I swear! After work and on weekends, I have the opportunity of designing book covers for small eBook publishers in the USA. On some weeknights I create away until midnight and still manage to wake up by 6 am the next morning. Sometimes I ask myself “Why do it when I can have a decent night sleep?” And the answer slams into my mind like the back of a pink Volkswagen. Seeing others enjoy something I’ve worked on is rewarding for me. The more I share; I feel a connection to the world and a reassurance of who I am. A place such as Red Bubble is an inspiration to me. It’s amazing to see so many people with similar stories of juggling time and passion to achieve their works. One of my friends once said, “Hey, you can take the girl out of creativity but never creativity out of the girl.” So true and worth the extra hours I force my body to be awake to achieve a desired result. - kseriphyn

May I take this opportunity to say there are some absolutely wonderful coloured pencil artists on Redbubble. I have only found a small number of them, but I’m sure there are many more out there and I would really appreciate it if anyone could name some more for me please. Some artists on my list use coloured pencils all the time, whilst others use them occasionally or as part of a mixed medium painting. One of the main reasons I joined Redbubble was because I saw the coloured pencil art of Penny Edwardes / Since then I have discovered lots more coloured pencil artists as well and here is a list of them with clickable links to their pages: Deborah Holman / / / heartco / Ine Spee / / / Liesl Yvette Wilson / / / Kathryn Pedroza / / / Michael51 / / / pinkyjain / Brian Towers / / / Gittiart / / / BarbBarcikKeith / / / Lee Wilde / / / Belinda Lindhart / Dawn Davies / Mariana Musa / J. Fehringer / Olechka / robertsloan2 / BlaqkPhoenix / R.L. Hall / Deborah Fuller / Sarah Pittman / MinoYasue / Anne McCluskey / Chelsea Kerwath / Michelle Wrighton / Jenna Forsdyke / Terry Krysak / cheetaah / Suryani Shinta / Angelique Moorman / Roberta Ponte / Steven Novak / sosij / petportraits / sowhat / Larry Butterworth / dimarie / John R. P. Nyaid / Delabarra / I AM UNABLE AT PRESENT TO SHOW DELABARRA’S WORK AS HIS IMAGES ARE IN GIF FORMAT, WHICH WILL NOT SHOW. Karen Townsend / Lazart / Estelle O’Brien / angelartist / Andy Mercer / 1960Fairlane / AS WITH DELABARRA’S WORK I AM UNABLE AT PRESENT TO SHOW ONE OF SEAN’S PICTURES, AS HIS IMAGES ARE IN GIF FORMAT, WHICH WILL NOT SHOW. i STRONGLY ADVICE EVERYONE TO GO TAKE A LOOK THOUGH! Karsten Stier / KARSTEN IS ANOTHER ARTIST WHO UPLOADS GIF IMAGES, SO I CAN’T INCLUDE A PICTURE, BUT PLEASE DO GO TO LOOK AT HIS WORK AS IT IS EXCELLENT. salhunter / synthpaintann I’m unable to show a drawing by synthpaintann because of her security settings, but do take a look at her portfolio. Many artists still look down their noses at coloured pencils, seeing them as a stepping stone towards painting. Others are moving from paints to coloured pencils, or using them for inclusion in mixed media paintings. Many artists, such as dawndavies, do occasional coloured pencil drawings to add to their portfolios. I’m starting to get hooked myself. If anyone knows of any other coloured pencil artists, I’d love to see their work please.

TUTORIAL: Downsizing those "example images" on your profile page

I recommend printing these instructions so that you have them handy for reference. It is easier than switching back and forth to this screen. Sometimes the examples of framed photos can take up quite a bit of room on our profile pages. Here’s how you can make them smaller to take up less room. SHORT VERSION: Save the framed image to your computer and re-size it in a photo editing program. Then upload the smaller version back to RB using the “hide” feature. Once uploaded then you can right-click on the image to get the URL address in order to post the smaller version on your profile page. That was a quick-and-easy version for the more computer saavy. STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS: Below are more detailed instructions that explain how to add smaller examples (card, laminated, matted, etc.) to your profile. You can view my profile to see an example of the size I used. Click on “my bubble”. Click on “art” (on the 2nd row of links – not the top one). You should see “My Art” page – this is the page where you can edit your pics. Choose your photo and click on “Show Public View”. Click “Buy/Preview”. (Note: You won’t actually be buying, only previewing) Choose the frame of your choice, mat, color, etc. When the image of your framed photo appears on the screen, right click on the photo. A pop-up box will appear. Click on “Save Photo As”. Be sure to save as a jpeg (.jpg) file. A dialog box will appear. Choose a folder or location on your computer to save the framed pic. Remember where you save it. You are done with RedBubble for now. You can close your browser window or leave it open for later. Resize the Photo: You now will need to open the saved, framed image on your computer using a program such as Photoshop or Irfanview. You can use any software that will allow you to resize the image. For this example, I will use Irfanview. You can download this free software by going to www.irfanview.com If you are using another program, you will need to use the resize/resample feature. Open Irfanview. Open the framed image that you saved to your computer. Go to “Image” (top menu bar) – in the drop-down menu, choose “Resize/Resample” In the dialog box, you will need to change to a new size. For my own profile page, I chose approximately 175×141 pixels so that I could fit two images side-by-side. See my “profile page”: http://www.redbubble.com/people/patmonty/ for an example. These numbers are not set in stone. You may need to tweak the numbers to suit your own needs. Save your resized image in Irfanview, but be sure to remember where you have saved it. Close Irfanview and open RedBubble in your browser window. Add Smaller Image to Redbubble: Now you are going to upload the resized pic to RedBubble. IMPORTANT: Be sure to “Hide this work from others” When you upload, the resized image will be private and only can be viewed by you. Once uploaded, then right click on the private, resized image. A pop-up box will appear. Right click on the photo. In the pop-up box, click on “properties” (at the bottom of the list). Go to “edit your profile”. Now check the public view of your profile to see if the smaller-sized image appears. Now you can add the html code for your next image. Keep the html code for each image separated by one space. If you have problems or questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Have a blessed day, / Patricia OTHER TUTORIALS BY PATRICIA Adding Buttons To Your Profile Page Making Links How to make a calendar Add Examples (card, laminated, matted, etc.) to your profile Add photos to your profile description
