Watercolour on paper. 2007. Portrait of an Indigenous artist, Papunya, ca. 1970 from a photograph by Michael Jenson. source: National Library of Australia / / / / Papunya (23°13′S, 131°54′E), is a small Indigenous Australian community of about 350 people roughly 240 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, Australia. It is now home to a number of displaced Aboriginal people mainly from the Pintubi and Luritja tribes. / / / / Pintupi and Luritja people were forced off their traditional country in the 1930s and moved into Hermannsburg and Haast’s Bluff where there were government ration depots. There were often tragic confrontations between these people, with their nomadic hunter-gathering lifestyle, and the cattlemen who were moving into the country and over-using the limited water supplies of the region for their cattle. / / / / The Australian government built a water bore and some basic housing at Papunya in the 1950s to provide room for the increasing populations of people in the already-established Aboriginal communities and reserves. The community grew to over a thousand people in the early 1970s and was plagued by poor living conditions, health problems,[such as flu, the disease of the white man which the aboriginals’ bodies found hard to fight off] and tensions between various tribal and linguistic groups. These festering problems led many people, especially the Pintupi, to move further west closer to their traditional country. After settling in a series of outstations, with little or no support from the government, the new community of Kintore was established about 250 km west of Papunya in the early 1980s. / / / / It was during the 1970s that a striking and unique blend of ancient and modern art styles began to emerge in Papunya and by the 1980s had begun to attract national and then international attention, now commanding a proud place on world art markets. source: www.wikepedia.org / / / / / / / / New original art listed every Sunday night in my eBay store

Acrylic on Canvas 75×100cm. (Commission – Original Sold) A snippet from my blog 21 April 2009 / Painting Commission – Claudia’s Gift A couple of months ago I was asked to do a rather unusual commission. I say unusual because the buyer saw a painting of mine on the internet. They considered purchasing it, but after much deliberation decided instead to commission a work. The original inspiration for their commission being my painting ‘Between Takes’ as pictured below. / ! / http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/art/backingcolor:white/product:greeting-card/view:preview/2340565-4-between-takes.jpg! The young buyer (through her Mum’s wallet) had several requests and thankfully they put them all together in a brief for me which I worried about being able to stick to. / Here’s a snippet of that brief: / She likes the female in Between Takes because she is: / -Pretty, elegant and sassy with delicate features, yet she is fun, bold and out there / -She is wearing a very fashionable/designer/funky outfit (very youthful appearance with use of the striped legs) / -She loves the white fluff of the skirt, it is interesting and softens the outfit beautifully / -it is a full body painting and not just a head and torso / -it is simple and clean with not too much distraction, it is very much about the girl / -she’s not wearing any jewellery / -fun dramatic/theatrical feel / -bold yet delicate/beautiful detail / -she loves the colours and in particular the lime green/yellow background / Colours she likes: / -pink/purple/lime yellow/lime green/black/gray/silver/white / Other Preferences: / -Medium length layered hair/colour similar to By The Light Of The Silver Moon (no fringe/medium brown with purple/other coloured streaks) / -Eye colour being hazel/green / -Devon Rex Tigerlily Purple (larger female cat) / -Cat not to dominate painting / We did wonder if we could incorporate fashionable fairy wings in her designer outfit (fluff and silver leaf perhaps)?! Commissions can be difficult because they normally come after a painting that has been painted intuitively. I tend to just paint and enjoy the process and let my instincts lead me. With commissions there is much more work on a conscious level – and the challenge is in being able to please the buyer, stick to the brief, maintain a sense of spontanaity and most importantly not to compromise one’s own style and enjoyment. After all, a painting done without love and enjoyment is not a painting worth owning. One only needs to look at the thousands of cheap mass produced paintings being produced in Asia and then later easily discarded when the decor is changed. I strongly feel that work of this type diminishes the value of one off pieces painted with love and care, not to mention that these are potential artists with much to offer the world, churning our mass produced cheap pieces because of the need to support their families. / / So, with all this in mind, and me being well and truly a month over the patient client’s requested deadline, I present to you “Claudia’s Gift”. One thing must be said and that is that the photograph doesn’t do this painting justice. The small elements of silver leaf, pearlescent effect and subtle textures are lost and flattened out in the digital image. However, I think the photograph still enables the viewer to enjoy an overall sense of the completed artwork. Thank You as always for visiting… and stay safe. x Carmen. Ink on 120 gsm Cartridge Paper (A4) digitally reversed (one of my first digital experiments) I did this doodle whilst in hospital. I’d had some ‘funny’ heart beats and pains, hence the title. I rocked up at the emergency department of our local public hospital with a huge bag of art materials; ready for a 4-5 hour wait…..but, as soon as I mentioned pains in my chest…..well I didn’t even get to sit down, I was taken straight through and hooked up to all these monitors. So I spent the next 4 -5 hours in a bed (much more comfortable than the waiting room). I’m sure I have ‘Obsessive Creative Disorder’ because I can not stop drawing, creating, painting, doodling…..and no stay in hospital was going to stop me. I’m sure this was the most healing part of my stay as it really relaxes me. I’ve had my nose buried in the art of Da Vinci over the past couple of days, re-familiarizing myself with his mastery. / As much as I love his paintings, it’s his sketchwork that intrigues me the most…... his sketch workups for his paintings have such humanity in them, his invention sketches showing us a tiny glimpse of his genius, & those anatomy sketches giving us some insight into his constant need for knowledge…. Sadly I haven’t drawn anything for almost 5 years, but today the great Master has inspired me to pick up a pen after all this time, & I have to say it feels great! This image began life 12 years ago as a single line drawing hastily sketched as a thought came into my head. I’ve often looked at it with stirrings of interest….. / So today, with visions of Da Vinci & ancient manuscripts in my head I am drawing again .
