A self-portrait with another self-portrait and my last painting as a background. Foreground: Nude, pastel drawing on watercolor paper, private collection Europe / Background: YouMe, oil on canvas, private collection Australia I reluctantly did this self-portrait, it was one of the compulsory themes for my final exam in Portraiture Photography. My teacher told us to come with something creative and interesting, and gave us some amazing examples from previous years. I left this till the last moment because nothing interesting crossed my mind. In the end I took my last drawing for Chris Orchard’s class and my last painting and did this. I used the natural light which was coming from the balcony from my right side. The image wasn’t “photoshoped”. / Finally when I got up there in front to talk about my work, I was surprised to see that this work was everyone’s favorite. It was the least prepared of all my works. The commission selected it to put it on the school website, and not long after, The Advertiser news paper, called me to publish it. My agent printed it on a large canvas which was sold during South Australian Living Artists Festival.

I drew this with pencil on a piece of paper in my sketchbook. I referred to a photo of my mother as a 10 years old, and somehow it ended up looking more like me. Many people mistake this to be my self-portrait. It’s funny that it turned out this way. Many people tell me I resemble my mother, and I don’t see that so much. Even as I was looking at my mother’s past photo, I wasn’t thinking that she looked like me, but in the end I see a portrait which looks like me. I drew this during my summer after grade 11 (age 17). A revised version of my ‘Middlesbrough Drops’ watercolour painting. The coal drops on the river Tees estuary, in the 1830’s. / In the foreground, is the Tees river ferry – which in those days, was a small, rowing boat. I love the daunting and weird, distant grey structures, ready to drop the coal upon the collier (coal) ships. My version of a Thomas Harrison Hair, 1837 watercolour. Watercolour and HB pencil.

From drizzle to drowning. From dawn to middle of the night dreams that wake me up with a “pow.” That’s it. The answer. Then in the morning the drift falls from a darkened hollow into swirls of vapor and across a seaweed forest. My pencil scrapes. My brush strokes. Awaken. Awake to dream again. A struggle to find an answer that is forgotten in the effort to do do do what I think I must must must and drive myself crazy trying to escape. To sleep on my feet in a daydream of forest palms towering over and pools of languid, blue, mirrors instead of piles of dirty laundry. Or maybe it is all really the same. / The answer laying in the soft white shift of a sheet from a drier in sunlight and waving at the light’s own laughter at the sun. / acrylic on fabric. about 4 ft x 7 ft not stretched. / Journey of a Thousand Thoughts / the drawing prior to photoshopping I drew this last night in bed….with a sketch pad on my lap, by a lowlit lamp…..the eyes came first, as usual…....then the rest…...until i had but a head…..and no room for a body…... I thought what can I add to make this more about me, more interesting….then i remembered the beautiful hot air balloons I’d seen recently photographed by my friend Steven Agius and a while ago some other balloons taken by my friend Jeannette Sheehy and I thought it would make a great balloon….drifting away through the atmosphere, deep in thought….that’s how i often find myself…semi self portrait Drawn with pencil on A3 acid free cartridge paper. / Coloured in photoshop

I am still working on the other images in this series. I like challenging myself in new ways, with my self-portraits. And i thought it would be interesting to see if i could make it look like i was interacting with myself . . . in some way. I shot this series against a green screen. The background was taken from a photo-shoot i did at an industrial site in Seattle, Washington. The watchman was kind of enough to let me onto the grounds and gave me a tour and all access pass with my camera. I wanted to convey the extreme sadness i feel with manic depression. Over the years i have discovered that sadness is often anger, spread really thin, masquerading as melancholy. Anger is an emotion i have a very difficult time allowing myself to feel and express, i often repress it. As a child i was not allowed to express my feelings or my anger. There is a detachment that comes with sadness, a disconnect from the self, from the world . . . Soo I got alittle frustrated with all the smoke here in southern California, and noticed ash all over my patio….so decided to paint with it. / Just sad to see alll those trees and homes gone, and decided there must be some good somewhere from all this disaster and 2 lost firemen. The Irony was not lost on me with this one. this was by far the most frustrating thing I have ever created. / I had envisioned a completely different shot to this when i came up with the concept. But it just wouldn’t work, no matter what i did it just would not co-operate and work out how it should. I tried everything to get what i wanted, i couldn’t get the perspective right, i couldn’t get the framing right, i couldn’t get the composition right, the hair and wardrobe didn’t look how it should, Strongest hair gel you can get my ass… it was all so fucking frustrating… once i got sick of trying and failing and wanting to put the axe through my camera and head, i decided to go a completely different route, this is that route…. I do like this shot though, its quite different than what i had in mind, but it works. One day i will do it again, and it will work…. it better… / . / I’m sure many of you can relate to this idea, this isn’t just a reflection of Artist against their Art, the art is our world, and we get so frustrated when it doesn’t work out, lately I have been feeling quite down and out over events and thoughts I’ve been thinking about non stop, so i decided to make this… / .
