I was having an interesting conversation with my photographer friend Ian the other day. He was comparing my work to his. In his words, his photos were more “documentary” or “factual” while mine were more “artistic” and “poetic”. I was quite flattered by the comparison as I have always wanted to convey emotion and narrative through my pictures. But it raised a question in my mind as to how we convey emotion and narrative through our pictures. How much is it in the composition, how much in the titling and presentation and how much is actually in the mind of the viewer? How can you convey emotion through a composition? I think much relates to the state of mind of the individual taking the picture. Certainly when I’m in a happy mood I will notice positive things – on a basic level, the beauty of the world around. When I’m in a negative mood, I will be taking pictures of negative things, or things with negative associations – that seems to be chains for me. And in those images I am trying to convey feelings of being trapped, confined, restricted by life and a desire to be free. Positive images for me are the wide vistas of the countryside, wildlife running free, that sort of thing. I try to convey that sense of freedom and liberty, joy and life. I don’t know whether I succeed. Go and decide for yourself I’ve come to realize that titling is equally important. A good title leads the viewer to what you want them to see. Some days I’m afraid I’m rather lazy – but if you want to convey a sense of a lion running free through the African veldt you don’t call your picture “Lion”. I keep promising myself that I must spend more time considering a title, but in the fast moving world of the internet I’m afraid that expedience often wins in the desperation to keep a high profile. And then there’s the great unknown, the one thing that as an artist you are unable to control: the viewer. At its best, the viewer approaches the picture in the same frame of mind as the artist. At these times there is almost a spark – the viewer “gets” it. They can look at the picture and see through to its heart. I wonder whether much of the fuss over modern art is simply a case of the viewers inability to be on the same wavelength as the artist. Or the artist presenting a concept that is too esoteric. So does that mean I have to approach my pictures with a viewer in mind? Or can I be utterly self-indulgent. Well, therein lies the difference between an amateur and a professional. The professional always has to make his or her own feelings subservient to those of the buying public. In some respects they have to limit their imaginations – rather like a photographer wanting to express himself artistically, but being restrained by the fact that the happy couple just want bog standard wedding pics. The amateur is much better off in that respect. We have no professional considerations, we can let our imaginations and feelings run riot through our art. We have no audience other than friends and family. We are free.

Self-portrait photographed with a digital camera and remote control. Hair, styling and make-up also created by Jaeda DeWalt. About this Image / I have many facets, i wear many masks. This self-portrait celebrates the side of me that is courageous in the face of fear, moving through it . . . instead of running from it. The facet of me that rises up and becomes triumphant in times of tribulation. The part of me that becomes resilient when i fall flat on my face, allowing me to pick myself up off of the pavement and start anew. It has a dark and sombre feeling, much like how i was feeling at the time i created her. I used to laugh and carry on that my thoughts and my moods could ever be conveyed through a painting, and it was just silly that people reckoned they did so, but just look at me now….i cannot seem to prevent it happening these days!! lol…that’ll teach me to scoff :)

In the current wave of artist’s interviews, here’s another that crests at the top and rolls forward toward the sands of Redbubble. A short while ago I had the honour of encountering Amber in the bubble. The first I’d ever really heard of Amber was a portrait posted on another member’s profile. I remember asking him who the lovely was. She wasn’t then a part of Redbubble, and I’m not privvy to what it took to get her here, but I’m thoroughly glad she was convinced to join us. Here is one poet and artist whose work never fails to move the emotional string within the heart – every poem, line by line, weaves it’s message through the reader; from head to heart. One of my personal favourites is this piece. Let me introduce you to Amber: How did you arrive at Redbubble I actually was trying to bond with my significant other Joseph A. Donais aka the dreadfulbride (he is so gifted see here) I thought I could post a poem or two for I had written a few pieces for him … such as “Melt Like Butter” and I thought it would make a nice gift and, surprise, figured since he was a frequent bubbler “if you couldn’t beat them (you darn bubblers) then lets see what it this Red Bubble is about” and joined it – and been hooked ever since. It is a magical place; truly it is… How does your creativity affect other aspects of your life? My creativity affects many aspects of my life, I have an analytical mind, sometimes hard to switch gears and can be a problem … with this seeking nature my creativity often comes out with new solutions to old problems … I search for light at the end of the tunnel and sometimes the simple thought is our best path. I am a flint stone …I look for new ways of looking at life I feel I have a multi-dimensional focus and I see out there. I see myself as a spirit seeking spiritual enlightenment, deeper knowledge and seeking inner peace and spiritual improvement within myself first and in our world… and keeping it simple generally works best for me. How many mediums do you work in? Which is your favourite, and why? I work in many mediums from flowers to tambourines… lyrics to chord, and vocal to instrumentation and paint to ink. I used to think my favorite medium was music but I now believe that word, art, music, sculpture and any and all mediums can touch the soul equally and as powerful. An example of contrasts a silent picture to an overt message can be beautiful. So I have no favorite medium. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special This is really hard – to choose just one, so hopefully you’ll bear with me. To put it to one person and one inspirational moment I would have to say working with Cate Townsend She is a truly wonderful artist (check her out or you’ll be missing something). I believe she bubbled me in the middle of our collaboration and told me she was so spirit filled with compassion and empathy in our collaboration of Stolen Child that she felt she had to stop from her heart breaking, the work had consumed her… This moment I was filled with a deeper compassion and understanding… of true art and true spirit … for the message we were carrying I have never felt so deeply about any other work or with any other artist in collaboration and I wrote her Standing In the Whispers. I was inspired to comfort her and my spirit and encompassed in the work it was of truly spiritual nature a beautiful release and experience. Show & tell: What three works or people on redbubble have moved or inspired you? I will list a I am pushing my favorite works and artists please allow me “Breaking Free” by Sean Farragher / He is a truly gifted photographer and artist Breaking Free This represents to me the darkness of our spirit breaking free and I am a person who is in recovery… I always have to watch my darkness; she lingers… Solareclips aka Julie Her beautiful spirit shines in showing us God’s creation, however small, in a new and wondrous light… Wonderful Bonita – bamagirl38 The spiritual cheerleader of the bubble. Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled… seeing this piece always give me peace and joy in spirit… and heart Leah Hyland and her so talented work Metamorphosis I love changing and growing spiritually for the better and this piece represents that to me in it’s entirety. Raven Soul – her magically dark pieces allow us to see what is in us all check out Despair And finally Shree who is entirely unique in style and pre vision of spirit and practicing the Golden Rule in his walk – this is another wonderful piece Please check these artists out and their beautiful spirits!!!! / Thank you for asking me to do this I truly feel grateful and flattered.

Do you think Art can work as a therapy to assist people to improve their day to day life ? / Please give your views on this topic.. The World needs compassionate artists to provide a positive contribution to improve people’s life. / I would like, like-minded artists to show case their related work and give a bit of description to the work so people can use it as a resource to overcome their blue days. / Let me define it first, “ Love- Art- Therapy ( LAT) ”, which transforms the people into a heavenly state having sheer Joy, Happiness, Bubbly nature, a great Hope, Confidence and overcome anxiety, depression, helplessness as people view his art work. / eg. View my painting” Imagine Now ! Heavenly Earth “It says Imagine NOW Heavenly in all countries on this planet called Earth. The values like if you shower yourself and others with Love, Romance, Respect and Service which results in Peace, Energy, Happiness and Divinity respectively, within you and your environment, which enables You & me and other people to make this Earth into an Heaven, NOW !. / The Beatles, John Lennon lives forever in people’s heart and spreads his love for people - Imagine – No Country , No religion……. We ..love you ..John!.. / / “Sunillism” is a new responsible concept to make yourself as a role model, a way of life, determined to make this Earth a better place and see this world as a small family indeed. where nature, plant, animal and people have mutual dependence. Real pleasure is to live for others, not for yourself, Money is an Energy , you do need it but excessive is not good either, late Mr Kerry Packer could not take a single cent with him after he died he has to leave all billions behind, even Mr Bill Gates, Microsoft owner now realized that accumulating money is not the life’s purpose, He had a change of heart and now, he is busy donating that money by making Gates Foundation to spent to uplift the needy people to make a difference to peoples life. So life balance is the key. / I have tried to expand popular “Imagine” message as an Art Form . Here it shows Imagine NOW and Earths view from the North Pole showing Europe, Canada, Russia, USA, Africa, India, China, and of course Australia, New Zealand are down under. . / So, just keep your focus on yourself; for the all these great values shown in this art which are already inside you; in your heart and which are trying to come out of you. Focus on them to grow and allow to come out. Miracle will happen and would transform you. / In a Nutshell, lets treat ourselves and others as God and Goddesses as everyone has Soul a divine presence in our bodies and cosmos. As you know wherever you focus it enlarges or magnifies, so lets goodness come out of us by focusing on good values. / Here, I am introducing myself. Sunil Sharma is a Oil on Canvas Artist , Motivational speaker, Holistic Life Coach, Researcher, Teacher, Career Consultant lives in Sydney , Australia. Further, I hereby, welcome you to view and to give your comments about my “Oil on Canvas” work. Please bubble me or please feel free to write your new friend anytime on my email: sunil-c-sharma@hotmail.com

During the early days of my career (which i identify as being during my early 20’s), i was just starting to find the courage to label myself a composer. This was a huge step for me psychologically because although i was working as a professional musician, writing music for film and dance projects and performing regularly, i lived in this fear than sooner-or-later i was going to be caught-out as a fraud! It’s a big word, FRAUD. It has all kinds of connotations with it, and the whole concept has a dirty vibe to it. That’s what i felt. Like my dirty secret would eventually get out, and I’d be exposed as nothing more than a pretender, a fake, a low-life wanna-be. Pretty intense, hey. Yet people were paying me good money to write and perform music, i was getting great reviews, the projects i was working on received world-wide acclaim, there were awards and interviews….how was this possible if i was faking it? So intense were my feelings, that i began to ask a few close artist friends whom i had the greatest creative respect for, “do you ever feel like you’re a fake?”. Unexpectedly they ALL said yes, each one of them reacting to the question with a sense of relief that they could finally talk about it. I discovered that not only was i not alone in my own feelings, but that this mindset was prevalent in creative vocations. There is an unspoken fear that eventually the artist will be sprung, and they would be forced back to the depths where they belong. Most surprising of all was my discovery that the more talented the artist, the deeper those feelings appeared to run. Begs the question “why”, doesn’t it. Well, i can only answer this by drawing from what others have shared with me, and through my own experiences. So here’s my theory… “Talented” artists (we’ll leave the discussion of what talent is for another time), often start out in a less traditional way. For example, I’m a self-taught musician, only taking lessons in music to sharpen up my skills and perceptions of my art form as a young adult. This leaves the door wide open to feel less validated and uncredited. Also, music to me comes so naturally…practically effortless. It’s so enjoyable, it feels like there is no work involved in it, because most people class work as being something that one has to strive over and struggle with. Music also exposes a passion in me, one that is self-perpetuating…the more music I’m making, the more music i feel inspired to make. Plus, making music kinda gives me a high. All in all, it’s such an enjoyable and easy process, fun and passion-invoking, that i feel like i must be cheating somehow. I remember feeling this way when i used to improvise song arrangements on the piano as a kid to pop songs. I’d listen to a song a few times, and that was all I’d need. My friends would often need a few weeks working on it, but i seemed to already know it. I’d also just start singing harmonies to songs i barely knew…and knew no one else who could do that. i must have been cheating. I felt like i was, because i seemed to already know the answers. It makes perfect logical sense, except that of course there was no cheating involved, and no fraud…there was no deception. It’s about time that we as a society accepted that work doesn’t need to be soul-destroying in order for it to be valid. We don’t need to hate our jobs, our boss, and ourselves in order to show we work hard, and only then deserve some kind of return. And what is that term “working hard” all about anyway? Isn’t “working well” a better description? Surely being effective is better than being hard. And if something comes naturally, isn’t that a good thing? So many fantastic artists i have seen don’t market themselves, believing their work can only be a hobby because it’s something they love to do. DOH??!! If reading this has struck a truth in you, then chances are that you have something you do that comes naturally and easily to you. It’s called talent, not fraud. It’s real, and humanity need you to share it, not keep it locked up in your closet. If you need to share how you feel, let it out now, don’t wait ‘til you’re on your death-bed with a suitcase full of regrets. It’s perfectly natural to feel this way, but don’t let it ruin your journey. Embrace your potential. / Express yourself. / Expose that which comes easy…because for so many other people, what you do takes hard work. / Your natural abilities are more valuable than any certificate you could ever get in your life…EVER!!
