  • (be sure to listen to the music (below) as it enhances the viewing experience) This is a photograph I took of an old building in downtown New Orleans shot in 2001. That is my son in the doorway. The rest of the family are looking out the windows but they are not really there. I put them there to show that they were thinking of Mathew and were there “in spirit” during this difficult time dealing with his illness. Read the Back Story / to this building image. . . – (flying 5 days after 9/11) / -I was determined to get there no matter what- / We went back to NOLA in 2006 and this building was no longer there. / Opeth -Death Whispered a Lullaby Dec 9, 09 / Black & White Challenge The young man in the doorway is Mathew, my son. This was taken in 2001 when I was visiting him in New Orleans where he had just moved to start med-school in September. / Near the end of August he fell ill and had to have emergency surgery. He had an internal abcess and had to have a part of his small intestine removed. He found out that he had Crohn’s disease. I flew there to help take care of him during his recovery. We went out walking a few days after I got there and came across this building. If you view larger you can see how thin & palid he looks. / I decided to add some of his family members to the picture so it would show that they were there “in spirit”. That’s me in the top right corner. . . Backstory 2 regarding this trip: I flew New Orleans 5 days after 9/11/2001. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to go but once the airlines got the go ahead to start flying again, they did a fantastic job of adjusting flights to accomodate those who still wanted or needed to fly. / It was an interesting experience and a bit scary to get dropped off at the airport and have only about 5-10 people going through security to go on their various flights. Something I will probably never see again. . . I hope not anyway. . Image post treated in Photoshop with my own texture overlays on layers using blending modes. Honorably Featured: /
