  • Let's Do a Beautiful RedBubble Book! - Are You Interested?
    by Curtis Bard

To all my friends and fellow artists, / I’m finding out more and more every day what a great community of creative and friendly people are…

To all my friends and fellow artists, / I’m finding out more and more every day what a great community of creative and friendly people are involved with RedBubble. Do you think it would be possible to set things up in RedBubble to allow people from certain categories to collaborate on a book that could then be printed? (I.E.: Members load their best photos into a book section of the Web site to be self-published on-demand, and sold on the Web site for RedBubble’s and the included artists’ benefit?) I believe that other sites like www.CafePress.com and www.Lulu.com already have this capability. I would be interested in participating in something like this, even if there was an up-front fee to help RedBubble make it happen. / Perhaps there might be a way to work with a on-demand publisher/printer such as www.Trafford.com. I’m excited about this possibility, and there are so many great artists on RedBubble that I can’t help but think that they also would be excited about this prospect, and that we could do a very appealing book that could potentially help all the professional and emerging artists on RedBubble publish and sell their work. Please consult with others on this and let me know what you think… Thanks, / Curtis / ——- Hi Nodakami, / Thanks for the tips, comments and suggestions! I’m a newbie, so I hope you will bear with me. I’ll try to address some of the points you’ve touched on… Some people said that a RB book would be too big if it had no categorical way to narrow it down, so I just threw that in, but I suppose it could be for everyone with internal categories (like fantasy, realism, fractal, B&W, etc.), (if it was not so big as to become cost-prohibitive). I would think it would be “all the above” that you mentioned; I.E.: for the artists, for RB, and for sale, IF it was really nice and the marketplace would like it and wish to purchase it. Your “Best of” idea sounds good to me. I think RB is interested in the online print-on-demand book idea, and any printed works would surely boost their membership. I think they are interested in something that would work similar to the calender creation, but whatever form it takes, I’ve learned that it may take awhile to become a reality on RB. There are many works of art on RedBubble that are so uniquely beautiful, that it just seems like a natural thing to want to see them on large glossy pages in a book. If the RB artists express an interest, I will try to put their ideas out there on the suggestions forum, and also post to my journal and to other forums. You expressed another good idea in that short artist “bios” and/or lifestyle essays could be included with their work. This type of book would be great exposure for RedBubble and also for those of us who are “Emerging Artists”. I’m really excited about this possibility. In a relatively short time I’ve already grown to like the artists on RB, and to appreciate their awesome work. The best thing that could happen is that people like yourself might become interested in this possibility and together we could encourage RB to help us make it happen. Thanks again for your ideas and input, / Curtis / —- webgrrl wrote you a BubbleMail 4 days ago: i think its possible.. its just a matter of planning it out ..and someone to instigate it…. like the build it and they will come? yes cafepress has book printing capabilities..but if im not mistaken.. LULU (lulu.com) is the leader in self book publishing.. ive made a calendar there with them.. http://www.lulu.com/content/905970 and i have to say that i really like the option of having black bkground (so far the only place able to do that..and custom holidays as well..) id be interested in projects / help / things like that.. if you see my profile and see all the sites/projects that im doing all myself.. cuz i got tired of waiting for others to do it with me..so i just started them myself… and hope everyday…… others will want to join.. :/

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: When I began this list of coloured pencil artists, my intention was to provide illustrations of the works of Redbubble Coloured Pencil artists. Recently, many have started using the copy-protection facility provided by Redbubble, so I am unable to add illustrations when this happens … just thought I’d mention, in case anyone was hurt that I’d left them out. There are some absolutely wonderful coloured pencil artists on Redbubble. I have only found a small number of them, but I’m sure there are many more out there and I would really appreciate it if anyone could name some more for me please. Some artists on my list use coloured pencils all the time, whilst others use them occasionally or as part of a mixed medium painting. One of the main reasons I joined Redbubble was because I saw the coloured pencil art of Penny Edwardes / Since then I have discovered lots more coloured pencil artists as well and here is a list of them with clickable links to their pages: Deborah Holman / / / heartco / Ine Spee / / / Liesl Yvette Wilson / / / Kathryn Pedroza / / / Michael51 / / / pinkyjain / Brian Towers / / / Gittiart / / / BarbBarcikKeith / / / Lee Wilde / / / Belinda Lindhart / Dawn Davies / Mariana Musa / J. Fehringer / Olechka / robertsloan2 / BlaqkPhoenix / R.L. Hall / Deborah Fuller / Sarah Pittman / MinoYasue / Anne McCluskey / Chelsea Kerwath / Michelle Wrighton / Jenna Forsdyke / Terry Krysak / cheetaah / Suryani Shinta / Angelique Moorman / Roberta Ponte / Steven Novak / sosij / petportraits / sowhat / Larry Butterworth / dimarie / John R. P. Nyaid / Delabarra / I AM UNABLE AT PRESENT TO SHOW DELABARRA’S WORK AS HIS IMAGES ARE IN GIF FORMAT, WHICH WILL NOT SHOW. Karen Townsend / Lazart / Estelle O’Brien / angelartist / Andy Mercer / 1960Fairlane / AS WITH DELABARRA’S WORK I AM UNABLE AT PRESENT TO SHOW ONE OF SEAN’S PICTURES, AS HIS IMAGES ARE IN GIF FORMAT, WHICH WILL NOT SHOW. i STRONGLY ADVICE EVERYONE TO GO TAKE A LOOK THOUGH! Karsten Stier / KARSTEN IS ANOTHER ARTIST WHO UPLOADS GIF IMAGES, SO I CAN’T INCLUDE A PICTURE, BUT PLEASE DO GO TO LOOK AT HIS WORK AS IT IS EXCELLENT. salhunter / synthpaintann I’m unable to show a drawing by synthpaintann because of her security settings, but do take a look at her portfolio. Lee Grissett Azaragoza / John Hayes / Countrytennis / Kate Eller Many artists still look down their noses at coloured pencils, seeing them as a stepping stone towards painting. Others are moving from paints to coloured pencils, or using them for inclusion in mixed media paintings. Many artists, such as dawndavies, do occasional coloured pencil drawings to add to their portfolios. I’m starting to get hooked myself. If anyone knows of any other coloured pencil artists, I’d love to see their work please.

  • The Big 30! Today
    by Carrie Glenn

/ *The Big 30…30,000 views!!! WOW! I’m feeling old!...

/ The Big 30…30,000 views!!! WOW! I’m feeling old! LOL! No really, it’s great…no actually it’s fantastic! Thank you to each and every one who has become a part of my life, my views and even my artwork itself. Here are some of my favorite highlights since the last ten thousand miles… The biggest news I probably have to announce is the publishing of my artwork in “Artists of The West” book! It is a true milestone for me and a great personal success. It was an amazing project to be involved in and over a three year journey. I ended up making some great friends and contacts along the way and really bonded with everyone involved in the book. / After the release of the book there was some really exciting events to follow like the first book signing in St. Helens with the official release. / I am also doing a public book signing, autographs and a special unveiling of three of my new paintings at the Astoria Sunday Market later this month. The Astoria Sunday Market / / (Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you’re interested or would like more information on the event) Also I am VERY excited to be a part of the RedBubble Rialto Towers art exhibit ironically also on July 27th the same date of my book signing in Astoria, Oregon! My work First Tree was chosen along with 40 other works of art to show in the foyer of the Rialto Towers for a two week art show! I am honored and thrilled to be showing my work alongside the other amazing artists and my RedBubble friends! I was also a part of some wonderful collaborations My collaboration piece Through The Past To The Future with my friend Michael Gatch was a total success and incredibly fun! It was inspired by his photo Through The Past / We had such a good time we did another one… / Apple Harvest which was inspired by Michael’s photo Old Apple When I looked at this work I saw the tree as the point of life that was celebrated and brought people and family together. I wanted to I take it back in time or to another time perhaps. I also had a fantastic collaboration with my dear friend Paul Hobday / I was really inspired by his photo Twisted and had a vision of what eventually became…The Other Side Of The Fence my newest work. Again THANK YOU to each of you who took the time to view my work, comment on my work and invest into me and my career. My art work is the road in this life that I have chosen to make a living on and really…it is my life. In each painting or drawing I create I try to leave a bit of myself to be shared with another person. / Thank you so much for supporting and embracing me and one of my true loves…art!

I’d like to give a shout out to the Unconventional Artistry Group for featuring “Eleven, polyptych (9),” by Makeba Kedem-DuBose! Peace… Eleven / Acrylic on Canvas / (9) H6” x W6” Canvases Mounted Many women in my work wear bandanas. In researching the origins of bandanas as headwear, I located information about their first uses in America. At eleven years old, enslaved girls were required to begin wearing a white bandana. This was to denote them as mature women, with all pertaining responsibilities. I painted Eleven to restore some dignity to the memory of these young girls. They should be remembered with respect for their strength, power, and accomplishments. Eleven, Polyptych (9) belongs to the following groups: / 1 on 1: The Fine Art of Portraiture, Complex Simplicity of Art, “Real” Life Art, African-American Experience, All Around the Styles, All Things Poetic, Artistic, Philosophical, Artists with Disabilities, Bits and Pieces , Childhood, Fine Arts, Multiracial Beauty, Outsiders, The Healing Journey, Unconventional Artistry – 3 per day ONLY, United States and You’re Accepted Original available. Please inquire via Bubble Mail if interested. Peace…

  • 5 Tips to Becoming A Better Artist
    by Lloyd Harvey

5 Tips to becoming a better artist / Part 1 Becoming a good artist takes years of dedication, passion, energy and time. There are no short cuts but here are some tips to send you in the right direction. Tip 1: Learn the Importance of the Sketch Sketching is one of those things that every artist MUST do and do often. Sketches don’t have to be perfect, nor do you have to show them to anyone. They can be as rough or as scratchy as you like but the thing to keep in mind is it’s readability. The purpose of a sketch is to quickly illustrate or develop an idea you have, to capture or study some form of reference so that it can be worked on at a latter date. Because of this, the sketch only needs to convey the right information to you and you alone (unless you are drawing an idea out for a client then the message needs to be crystal clear). Tip 2: Draw, Draw and Draw Some More! This is a similar tip to the first but what I mean by this is draw anything that comes to mind or visually interests you. Sketch on the bus, train, in bed and even on the toilet. Seriously! The more you draw from your mind and from reference, the better you will become and the quicker your skills will develop. Take the time to doodle lots of different subjects and in lots of different environments as this will all help build up a mental cataloge of images to draw upon latter when you may become stuck for ideas or inspiration. Tip 3: Build a Reference Library This is a great tip that I learnt from years back. As you begin to fill sketch books with illustrations of ideas and reference material, you should build up that stack of books with more books. By this I mean buying art books, books on clothing, guns, tanks, other cultures, animals etc. The list of what you should look into is endless and should extend beyond your general interests. But it mustn’t stop there. You should also collect images off of the internet and save them to your computer and organize them correctly. Take photos of things you see if you don’t have time to sketch them. The purpose is to have a nice big collection of images that inspire you, inflame your imagination and, more specifically, if you need to draw something right, having the material there to draw from will add realism and clarity to your work. Tip 4: Explore Different Mediums This is when you take an idea from sketch to final painting. Exploring other methods of creating that end piece can really yield some unexpected results and challenge you to push yourself further into new situations. Playing with different types of paints such as oil, acrylic, water colour or gouache are the options most people would suggest trying, but there is more than experimenting with these. You could try air brushing, pastels, using charcoal or taking the leap into the digital realm. All these different mediums have their strengths that you can harness but you will never know them unless you try them out. Tip 5: Learn Some Colour Theory (At Least) This is a big one. Colour theory is a massive, massive subject and I can’t do it justice here. What I would strongly suggest is investing time and money in a good colour theory book and learn from that. Even learning only a little bit, will help your work massivley. The more you push yourself to learn, the better and better you will become. More coming soon!
