  • Legend has it that this is the final resting place of King Arthur…

  • Taken at Port Arthur, an old convict settlement in Tasmania, just as the sun was disappearing.

  • I took this shot 10 years ago in 1998 on a walk that traversed the Western Arthurs in south-west Tasmania. Although I’d been hiking for years this hike redefined what a considered a hard hike to be and what spectacular scenery is, Tassie is just breathtaking. To give you an idea of its severity imagine spending 8 days traversing a ridgeline of a mountain range and then taking just one day to traverse back along the plains to regain your start point! It is also the place where the man who really inspired and defined a lot of my photographic aspirations and inspirations died. Peter Dombrovskis once said, “When you go out there you don’t get away from it all, you get back to it all. You come home to what is important. You come home to yourself”. Leaving his mortal coil in such a place for me seemed like the right thing in a bitter sweet kind of way. This particular shot was also one of the first where I felt that I began to approach that indefinable something that some work possess that just fills you with a sense of reverence, awe and inviolability of place. • Port Arthur. A place with a history of violence both recent and centuries past. Why should it be then that I feel so at home here? Countless restless souls both innocent and guilty surely prowl the grounds and should create a miasma of misery that is palpable and yet… whenever I step inside the walls of this old church I feel an overwhelming sense of peace permeate my very soul. • I have a fascination with the Arthurian Legends and have read just about anything I can get my hands on relating to Arthur and Guinevere (I especially love her story!). I recently found this mist shot in my archives and last night at some horrid hour this scene popped into my dreams. So here it is a scene straight out of my dreams…the Knight returns from the Mists of Avalon. • A collaboration with Rosalie Dale (my mum!), Misty Morning was perfect for my Avalon series, I think it works perfectly for the beginning of the story… The sword in the stone – where it all began for the boy who would become King Arthur. Born at Tintagel to King Uther Pendragon and the lady Igraine but sent away to serve as a helper in another castle, the boy who would grow up to become King Arthur was raised unaware of his parents’ status. He was a natural leader, a good fighter, and was always scrupulously fair, yet modest and unassuming. One day, a mysterious magician named Merlin announced that in the woods lay a stone with a sword thrust deep into its center. He promised that whichever man could draw the sword from the stone would be crowned the next king of Britain. Men came from all over the land to try their luck with the sword in the stone. Everyone from the knights to the blacksmiths, from lords to peasant children, tried to extricate the sword. None could. Finally, young Arthur was persuaded to try. Feeling foolish, he approached the stone, shaking his head—for why should he be able to pull out the sword, when the strongest of men had failed? But to his surprise and amazement (and to everyone else’s, certainly), as he grasped the pommel of the sword, he pulled it smoothly from the stone. This young unknown boy was to be the next king! Merlin came forward and congratulated the stunned Arthur, and that is where the story of King Arthur all began—with a sword in a stone. • Nimue…the lady of the lake Faeire queen…it was she who gave the sword Excalibur to Arthur and regained it when he died. She also accompanied three additional faerie queens to Avalon with the body of the slain king. Alfred Lord Tennyson – Idylls of the King “And near him stood the Lady of the Lake / Who knows a subtler magic than his own- / Clothed in white samite, mystic, wonderful. / She gave the King his huge cross-hilted sword, / Whereby to drive the heathen out. A mist / Of incense curl’d about her, and her face / Well nigh was hidden in the minster gloom; / But there was heard among the hold hymns / A voice as of the waters, for she dwell / Down in the deep-calm, whatsoever storms / May shake the world- and when the surface rolls, / Hath power to walk the waters like our Lord.” Other images in my Mists of Avalon series… The Sword in the Stone / The Isle of Apples / Mists of Avalon / Guinevere / Camelot Mists / © Sarah Moore 2008 Stock images / Background: http://riktorsashen.deviantart.com/ / Model: http://trinket-stock.deviantart.com/

  • The Holy Grail is the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and which was used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch Christ’s blood as he hung on the cross. In the time of King Arthur the quest for the Holy Grail was the highest spiritual pursuit for a knight. © Sarah Moore 2008 Sword / Background / King / Chalice Other images in my Mists of Avalon series… A Forbidden Love / The Sword in the Stone / Mists of Avalon / The Lady of the Lake / The Isle of Apples / The Road to Camelot / Guinevere / Merlin / Camelot Mists /

  • ACEO, 2.5×3.5 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008. Mordred is the result of the unknowingly incestuous union of KingArthur and his half-sister Morgause. A prophecy warns Arthur that a child born on May Day will be the cause of his death and the fall of his kingdom, so all the children of nobles born in May, including Mordred, are collected and sent on an old boat out to sea. The boat is wrecked but Mordred survives. He later becomes one of Arthur’s Knights but while Arthur is away tries to seize Guinevere. Arthur returns and kills Mordred, but not before he has dealt Arthur a wound that eventually causes his death.

  • Over the years, a variety of people, cultures, and species have been given credit for the building of Stonehenge. Some of the most legendary figures trying to take responsibility have included: / Giants: According to old myths, dancing giants were caught in a sunbeam and petrified to stone, causing the monument to be nicknamed the “Giant’s Ring”. The stones were also believed to have healing power. / Merlin and King Arthur: Some believe Merlin himself assembled Stonehenge to commemorate slain chieftains. It’s also rumored that the Sword in the Stone, which would eventually lead Arthur onto the throne and into legend, was made from Stonehenge Stones. / Aliens: Most of the world’s earliest and most elaborate crop circles are found within a forty-mile (64km) radius of Stonehenge. Scientists today are unable to replicate crop circles, suggesting that their construction and that of Stonehenge should perhaps be credited to a more intelligent species. / Atlanteans: According to Plato, the Kingdom of Atlantis controlled the islands of the Atlantic and built many stone structures to better predict future events based on astronomical calculations. Given the fate of Atlantis, which supposedly sank into the sea, it’s debatable how accurate their predictions could have been. / Druids: John Aubrey, a Stonehenge scholar, erroneously suggested this connection three centuries ago. The Druids are an earth-based faith that we now have formed much later than the building of Stonehenge. The Druids do celebrate the summer solstice, same as Stonehenge’s true builders, and they have recently made it a tradition to incorporate this ancient monument into current rituals. / The Beaker Folk from 2500 BC are believed to have done some of the work on Stonehenge. They were an aggressive culture that invaded the Salisbury Plain. From artifacts, we know that the Beakers were sophisticated, organized, understood mathmatics, worshipped the Sun, and celebrated the solstices. This makes them ideal builders for some of the site. / The other cultures that contributed to Stonehenge remain a mystery, though archaeologists are getting closer and closer to finding answers. This is a photograph of a full scale replica of Stonehenge that was erected as a WWI memorial by Sam Hill, in Maryhill, WA which overlooks the mighty Columbia River and Mount Hood. The photograph of the Full Moon was also taken by myself in October 2008, the two were merged and edited in photoshop7 with Redfield plug-in for the rippled water effect. Stonehenge

  • 9×12 pastel on Sennelier la carte paper I am pretty excited about the new Tarot: Map of Consciousness group! This is my attempt at an Empress, my personal favorite card. The Empress is the embodiement of the divine feminine. She is the Earth personified, or as the Celtic traditions would say, the sovereign goddess. / As many Avalonian and Authurian themed tarot decks have done, I have chosen to represent the Empress with Guinevere. Although much of the later written stories of Guinevere have her depicted as a frail, pale, infertile, adultress wimp; originally she would have been recognised as the sovereign goddess. She is the land personified, and the hero she choses to give her favors to would reign as king. Lancelot and Aurthur also represent the Oak and the Holly kings, fighting for the favor of the goddess to have this honor, and to reign over their respective seasons. / The Empress represents change and balance. In the Qabbala the path of the Empress is the path between wisdom and understanding. It is the Divine Feminine that brings this balance to humanity. / There are twelve stars above Guinevere’s head like on many Empress cards. This represents her connection to the heavens and spirit. She is the bridge between the earth, or the material, and heaven. The May blossoms connect her to the Beltaine goddess and is a symbol of fertility. / Guinevere’s name does mean “pale one”, but this is a reference to the ancient “shining ones”, and means that Guinevere was a faerie queen. • I think every Australian knows of Port Arthur, for dark events that happened here, both in the recent past, and early days of Australia. A correctional facility for the re-offending criminals from Britain and Ireland, this was more than just a jail. It was about changing these men to rejoin society. It was used from 1833 until the 1877 when it was closed down. This was the main church, and it was one of Australia’s first non-denominational churches. Built using convict labour, in the gothic style. The bird in the shot is a crow. I did try to get one of the many rosellas in the area in the shot, but no luck there. Canon 50D, 10mm. • We were racing the clock to try get to Port Arthur by sunset, and there was just too many bends, and slow trucks… However, this beautiful scene popped up, and we were only 10 mins from the site, I had to make a decision… I’m glad I stopped, turns out, the site was closed anyhow, and I got this shot of some weeping willows, and still water pools. 5 mins allong what seems to be an un-named side street, I think it was private property too, but not signed..
