A collaboration with Rosalie Dale (my mum!), Misty Morning was perfect for my Avalon series, I think it works perfectly for the beginning of the story… The sword in the stone – where it all began for the boy who would become King Arthur. Born at Tintagel to King Uther Pendragon and the lady Igraine but sent away to serve as a helper in another castle, the boy who would grow up to become King Arthur was raised unaware of his parents’ status. He was a natural leader, a good fighter, and was always scrupulously fair, yet modest and unassuming. One day, a mysterious magician named Merlin announced that in the woods lay a stone with a sword thrust deep into its center. He promised that whichever man could draw the sword from the stone would be crowned the next king of Britain. Men came from all over the land to try their luck with the sword in the stone. Everyone from the knights to the blacksmiths, from lords to peasant children, tried to extricate the sword. None could. Finally, young Arthur was persuaded to try. Feeling foolish, he approached the stone, shaking his head—for why should he be able to pull out the sword, when the strongest of men had failed? But to his surprise and amazement (and to everyone else’s, certainly), as he grasped the pommel of the sword, he pulled it smoothly from the stone. This young unknown boy was to be the next king! Merlin came forward and congratulated the stunned Arthur, and that is where the story of King Arthur all began—with a sword in a stone. Port Arthur. A place with a history of violence both recent and centuries past. Why should it be then that I feel so at home here? Countless restless souls both innocent and guilty surely prowl the grounds and should create a miasma of misery that is palpable and yet… whenever I step inside the walls of this old church I feel an overwhelming sense of peace permeate my very soul. Welcome to my sanctuary. Best viewed large

Nimue…the lady of the lake Faeire queen…it was she who gave the sword Excalibur to Arthur and regained it when he died. She also accompanied three additional faerie queens to Avalon with the body of the slain king. Alfred Lord Tennyson – Idylls of the King “And near him stood the Lady of the Lake / Who knows a subtler magic than his own- / Clothed in white samite, mystic, wonderful. / She gave the King his huge cross-hilted sword, / Whereby to drive the heathen out. A mist / Of incense curl’d about her, and her face / Well nigh was hidden in the minster gloom; / But there was heard among the hold hymns / A voice as of the waters, for she dwell / Down in the deep-calm, whatsoever storms / May shake the world- and when the surface rolls, / Hath power to walk the waters like our Lord.” Other images in my Mists of Avalon series… The Sword in the Stone / The Isle of Apples / Mists of Avalon / Guinevere / Camelot Mists / © Sarah Moore 2008 Stock images / Background: http://riktorsashen.deviantart.com/ / Model: http://trinket-stock.deviantart.com/

The Holy Grail is the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and which was used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch Christ’s blood as he hung on the cross. In the time of King Arthur the quest for the Holy Grail was the highest spiritual pursuit for a knight. © Sarah Moore 2008 Sword / Background / King / Chalice Other images in my Mists of Avalon series… A Forbidden Love / The Sword in the Stone / Mists of Avalon / The Lady of the Lake / The Isle of Apples / The Road to Camelot / Guinevere / Merlin / Camelot Mists /

I have a fascination with the Arthurian Legends and have read just about anything I can get my hands on relating to Arthur and Guinevere (I especially love her story!). I recently found this mist shot in my archives and last night at some horrid hour this scene popped into my dreams. So here it is a scene straight out of my dreams…the Knight returns from the Mists of Avalon. ACEO, 2.5×3.5 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008. Mordred is the result of the unknowingly incestuous union of KingArthur and his half-sister Morgause. A prophecy warns Arthur that a child born on May Day will be the cause of his death and the fall of his kingdom, so all the children of nobles born in May, including Mordred, are collected and sent on an old boat out to sea. The boat is wrecked but Mordred survives. He later becomes one of Arthur’s Knights but while Arthur is away tries to seize Guinevere. Arthur returns and kills Mordred, but not before he has dealt Arthur a wound that eventually causes his death.

Here is King Arthur, one of my flock who for those that don’t know is a King Parrot. I have finally received my new lens & thought I’d christen it on him! King parrots (Alisterus scapularis) are usually seen in pairs or small parties feeding among the outermost branches of forest trees, especially eucalypts and acacias. They eat seeds, berries, other fruits, nuts, nectar, blossoms and leaf buds, which they find mainly in trees, but they also come to the ground to pick up fallen seeds. / / The male is suited in crimson and green with blue striping on the wing coverts. In flight you can also see the blue under the wings. The female does not have the scarlet head and chest of the male but displays the same scarlet belly and lower breast as the male. Thank you for looking. This is Arthur as a baby :D

I took this shot 10 years ago in 1998 on a walk that traversed the Western Arthurs in south-west Tasmania. Although I’d been hiking for years this hike redefined what a considered a hard hike to be and what spectacular scenery is, Tassie is just breathtaking. To give you an idea of its severity imagine spending 8 days traversing a ridgeline of a mountain range and then taking just one day to traverse back along the plains to regain your start point! It is also the place where the man who really inspired and defined a lot of my photographic aspirations and inspirations died. Peter Dombrovskis once said, “When you go out there you don’t get away from it all, you get back to it all. You come home to what is important. You come home to yourself”. Leaving his mortal coil in such a place for me seemed like the right thing in a bitter sweet kind of way. This particular shot was also one of the first where I felt that I began to approach that indefinable something that some work possess that just fills you with a sense of reverence, awe and inviolability of place. For more Tassie shots check out my Tasmania gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

In the dying light of the day this crumbling ruin at Port Arthur blazes with a little of its former glory.

This is actually Lake Arthur, and this section is a stream that has branched off from the man made lake. The geese love to come and visit, and eat the bread crumbs. (I always have some sort of snack in the car for ducks and geese). The picnic table made a nice place to stop and have a nice cold soda and a break.

A collaboration with Stevie Millgate, thank you so much for letting me use your image…Light over the Castle A bit about the image… The apple tree in this image signifies the magical, mysterious, feminine side to the Arthurian Legend while the light from the Castle’s cross shaped window signifies the heavy Christian influence in King Arthur’s life. He struggled with both throughout his lifetime. Avalon – The Isle of Apples A small church was built here by Joseph of Arimathea; the rest of the island is inhabited by a race of women who know all the magic in the world. It was here that King Arthur came with Merlin and a hand reached out of the water and offered him the sword Excalibur, which served him throughout his life. It is said that the hand belonged to the Lady of the Lake. The island itself is a place of lakes and rock, with deep meadows and wooded hollows, where no wind blows and rain, hail, and snow have never been known to fall. The final image in my Mists of Avalon series...I have taken some artistic licence and imagination to create the final resting place for the Holy Grail. If you look closely you will see that the dragon is guarding the long sought after chalice known as the Holy Grail – a Knight’s ultimate quest. Dragons are known for hoarding their treasure and what better treasure to guard than the dragon’s nemesis – the Knight!! Arthur C Clarke wrote books good. Unfortunately, in order to quote him correctly I had to use an explanation mark. Colliding galaxies sourced here.

A collaboration with keleka656, thank you so much for letting me use a version of your image…Another Snow Day. Lancelot and Guinevere Lancelot had one failing, his adultorous love of Queen Guinevere. They tried to keep this love secret, it became known, and eventually brought about the undoing of the Round Table. Lancelot and Guinevere’s love for each other grew slowly. Initially Guinevere kept Lancelot away from her. Eventually, however the pair became lovers. Soon the pair were discovered…Guinevere was seized and condemned to burn to death for her adultery. Sir Lancelot returned several days later to rescue his Guinevere, killing several of King Arthur’s knights in the process. Lancelot ended his days as a hermit and Guinevere became a nun at Amesbury where she died. Gotta love a happy ending! © Sarah Moore 2008 Stock Used… Female Model / Knight / Raven Other images in my Mists of Avalon series… King Arthur and the Holy Grail / A Forbidden Love / The Sword in the Stone / Mists of Avalon / The Lady of the Lake / The Isle of Apples / The Road to Camelot / Guinevere / Merlin / Camelot Mists /
