OK….so I was just killing time, surfing the web and I cam across a website that I used to used a lot 7 or 8 years ago….it’s basically a site where musicians and bands upload their music; I found that they still had some of my stuff up there that I did when I thought all I wanted to do was write songs and compose music and be the next Timbaland/Dr Dre/Teddy Riley…I’ve just heard the 2 tracks I uploaded after a long, long time and they kinda give me the warm taste of nostalgia….although to everyone else they are probably totally lame…check it out the 2 songs here and let me know (play nice!): http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=98588&content=music

During that bleak time in U.S. history known as The Great Depression, there was something called The Works Progress Administration, or the New Deal. In short, the government created an opportunity for artists, writers and musicians to put their collective muses to work in bolstering up the minds and hearts of people who had little inspiration left in their lives, while at the same time creating an opportunity for artists to put a little money back into their ragged pockets as well. At the heart of the WPA was a need to capture the moment on film, in writing, on canvas, and in melody. To take what was happening, and document it in a way that served both as a historic record, and as a celebration to the determination and grit that kept people alive, and kept the tiny coals of hope aglow. Even beyond the government sponsered program, artists of all kinds heard the call of need. Of desperation. People needed escape. They wanted something that could transport them in that dark hour, to a place where their mind’s could take flight…their hearts could mend, and they could forget the growling in their stomachs, and the tears that stained their children’s cheeks. It was during this time, in 1939, that The Wizard of Oz came to the silver screen. With it’s opening of a black and white life for Dorothy in the dustbowl of Kansas, to the sudden sensory tsunami of color as she was whisked away to Oz… it was an epic journey that would make people’s hearts burst open with possibility, if only they would believe in it. The message behind all of this is a poignant one. In a time when Big Business grinds to a hault, and the hands of hard working individuals wring in worry and despair… it is a rallying cry for artists everywhere. The gift that comes freely to us, of muse and creativity, can be the glimpse of color through sepia colored glasses. It can be the melody that lifts tear stained eyes, and helps them see the true nature of human spirit. It is the crazy cartoon that still makes children laugh, despite the worn threads of their clothes and the worries that are beyond their years. Art knows no limits. It does not need Wall Street to buy and sell it’s heart. It does not need oil barons to back it’s worth. It is oblivious to the deception of mortgage companies, credit card telemarketers, and gas titans. It exists, because it is the very essence of the world we live in. It is the rose that continues to bloom in droubt. It is the blazing sunset that paints the sky over a closed factory. It is the dance of mist and sparkle of frost over homes in foreclosure. It is the diamond sky and pearl moon above a war torn city. Art exists, because our world exists. Our universe exists. We exist. And to those of us whose lifeblood runs in rainbows through our veins, and our every breath is a technicolor sigh…. it is our turn to be the infusion of hope in these anemic times. We don’t have to wait for a government to set up a program. We don’t have to wait to see our neighbor in tears. We know what to do. It is in our very nature to be empathetic to the shift in the global consciousness. And now is the time to grab our paint brush, our pen, our trumpets…and blast away the tornado twisting at our back door with a rush of color, light, and song. The tornado is not here to take us to Oz. We are here to bring Oz to the tornado, banishing it away with the click of our ruby red shoes, singing and dancing all the way home. (EDIT: After showing this to my dear friend Angi, she pointed out that – in her words – I had made a profound typo. I typed ‘Droubt’ – instead of ‘Drought’, marrying the two words together. A new word, with worlds of meaning. So I’ve kept it in the piece, as is. :) )

  • CD Cover Graphic Design Project

The front and back of the CD Booklet The back CD insert And Here Are Some Product Shots of the Cd / My work is featured in the group Woman Appreciation / (Thanks Jerame and Hello Kitty101) I designed this CD cover for my client who is establishing herself as a solo jazz singer after a long career of being in a jazz group since the early 80’s. Rebecca is still recording a few tracks but will be releasing her debut album 2008 or sometime in 2009. The style of her new CD is big band with all the brass and winds! After a photo shoot with over 700 shots, several wardrobe and lighting changes, I narrowed it down to the images shown here. On to Photoshop to design the cover and layout my work. / I designed this cover to really portray my clients best features and attributes and to express her style accordingly. Her bold flair and love for music was as important as expressing her faith. I tied all of that together for her through this design. Enjoy!

(Yes, i know it’s a lame title) Creative spaces are very important to the creative mind. They provide a sanctuary and are usually places of activity. Sometimes they appear pristine and ordered, but more than likely they appear to be jumbled heaps upon jumbled heaps, with seemingly no order. So what is a creative space? what’s it all about? The room/studio/corner/insert-your-own word-for-it-here is probably the single most important place on earth for the creative heart. It is as much a birthing room as a work space, and demands the same respect. A pile of “stuff” may in fact be a list of priorities, or reminders, like a 3-dimensional white board. It can represent a thought flow, one which is at the brink of creating a new masterpiece. To you it may have no logic, but to the artist it may be their link to their inspiration. Whatever you do, NEVER clean up a creative space that’s not your own unless you have been given permission to do so! It’s not an easy thing for most creative minds to simply flick from one head-space to the next, though many do out of necessity. If it’s at all possible, a studio space is best if that’s all it is. A small corner of the living room just doesn’t bring out the best in an artist, though it may well be of good intention. Creative spaces are sacred spaces. / Here, things are conceived of and born. Here the mind and the heart can meld and ideas can evolve over time. Here is where chapters are explored, lived, manipulated, and developed. It can often be the only place on earth where an artistic person feels safe, at-peace, and free. Feeling safe is a really important thing, and is often underestimated. / Sometimes a lot of emotion comes out of a person when they are birthing a new idea. Frustrations can overflow, or sometimes the process itself needs to be an angry one to achieve the desired effect, like the painter wildly throwing paint at a canvass. Musicians sometimes cry helplessly when the muse strikes, and writers often need to become their characters to write from a sense of truth. The creative space is a temple of humanity, where life can explode, crumple, run, or die, in a kaleidoscope of temporary madness. It may not always be visible, but the process of creativity can be as large as a universe outside of the tangible reality. The creative space is a frontier. / It’s a place where new things are explored and devoured, nurtured and dismissed. It’s a powerful force, and one of the most important tools a creative mind will ever have.

  • WHAT DEFINES A MOMENT

Just wanted to share this with you all…......This is only a young guy who already is making his mark on the world by giving up his job to become a photographer and musican as well as a busker…......You might see him around the streets of Brisbane and by the seems of this especially when its strange hours of the day…........certainly worth a read and to get inspired by….............. Karl Smith is The Lyrical “Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens I want to change the lives of others. To make them realise late nights and week days don’t matter – having to wake up the next day is not an excuse to lose opportunities of experiencing life – work is not an excuse to not travel the world – or travel the times. Ever ran the streets at 3 am… without alcohol? Ever just sat on a beach with a friend and just watched the sunrise… and then went to work? I’m here to change the lives of others, to be remembered when I leave, but not remembered for me, but remembered for them. So they know you can live however you really want to. I want people to learn to not ever let anything get in the way of adventure. Do something with someone – something random – on a Tuesday! Or Wednesday! At 4 am, 1:30am? Hell, lunch time! Just do something – go somewhere. Who cares where, just make it something different enough that you can remember it, because that’s what defines a moment: Whether or not it’s one worth remembering. Go to the movies on a Friday night and then go to the clubs on Saturday…. It might be fun; you might have a wonderful time… but do it a few more times and which time was which? Where did you actually go? What movie did you see??? What did you say that night – when did you remember holding hands? When was it? What time was it? You eventually just forget these things… but wake up and drive to someone’s house, take them to a park and climb a tree, eat skittles, talking about Sesame Street and stickers. Or just go to a beach make a small fire and build a sand castle city with no one there to ruin it and see how big you can get it before the sun comes up – take a million pictures of it then destroy it… These things you will remember. These things are stories worth telling – these are moments worth living – I want to make people understand that. Life’s not JUST about work and fun. Its about moments and memories… So make some already!” Karl Smith

  • Seeking musicians, poets, speakers for Brisbane art exhibition
    by Genevieve Robey

Helloooo Brisbane people … I’m exhibiting in and coordinating (although my coordination skills are being put to the test big time!) an art exhibition at the Circle Gallery in West End, Brisbane. Theme: “Identity and Emotion” / Dates: Friday 29 Jan – Wed 3rd Feb 2010 / More info on the event here I’m looking for some activities/events to run during the exhibition period, including opening night, to appeal to different aspects of the community and to explore the theme in as many ways as possible. I’ll be very up front in saying I’m on a very small budget (after catering, gallery hire, flyers etc) but will pay something and will do my utmost to promote those involved (online and offline). Poetry reading: There is so much great writing on RedBubble that explores the theme wonderfully. I don’t know the first thing about running a poetry reading though. I thought it would be great to get some people here to submit their work and for some people to be able to read it and/or their own work at a session at the gallery. But I’d need someone to take ownership of this 1-2 hour event … I can help with the organising and promotion of it though. Speakers: I’m open to speakers who want to talk about art, identity, emotion or related topics Musicians: any Brisbane musicians on RedBubble or friends of bubblers? We could have a ‘just in the background’ type thing or we could look at a small ‘show’. Opening night, Saturday/Sunday arvo or during the week … Something else that you think would work in well? ...speed-painters? Rabbits out of hats? (ok, that’s just silly). I’m very open to suggestions … but really keen to connect it to the “Identity and Emotion” theme. Also .. any Brisbane people (or those in town at that time), I would love you to come along and support the lovely group of people I’m exhibiting with (painters, photographer and a sculptress). Gen / x
