Dryad; The departure of Autumn and arrival of winter Recently someone emailed me an image painted by a woman fantasy artist who has clearly used this painting as her template and inspiration, the only change is she reversed the image, simplified the tree and put a tight black dress on her. This is flattering and I dont mind, but I’d really appreciate it if people who use my work as a source would be fair and kind enough to credit me and the original painting. As this image was published in a 2007 goddess calendar, its easy to document which was created first. Thats my rant, now heres the good stuff: The Story: / “The nights are growing cool, leaves swirling from the trees. A few of the hardiest wildflowers adorn meadow and hedgerow. I prepare for the arrival of days bleak with driving rain, nights laced in ice, gather a few remaining flowers whose faded scent will serve to remind me on cold nights of summer’s long days of sun and heat. My home is a large, ancient oak with low gnarled branches and deeply furrowed bark. Mirroring a full crown overhead, her thick roots delve down and radiate outward, keeping us anchored and safe in stormy winds. I gather autumn wildflowers for my bower inside the oak, where I’ll sleep sound as a baby in the womb awaiting rebirth into the world of light. All summer fragrant blossoms such as these adorned my hair and gowns, sunny days and sultry nights spent with Pan, the satyrs, nymphs, and my sister dryads. Now they’ll lay crushed and fragrant beneath me, bringing sweet dreams of what is to come.” The tree in the background is the sketch of an ancient oak growing about 5 minutes from my home. Its documented as being over 200 years old and in the early 1800’s a treaty was signed beneath it between the local Pottawattamie tribe and invading settlers. Didn’t do much good as a decade later most Pottawattamie were ‘relocated’ to a reservation in Nebraska. The oak is so broad at the base that several people holding hands cannot encompass its trunk. This painting depicts who lives inside it! Like dryads everywhere, she dosn’t care about politics or the human world, unless it threatens her tree. Lucky for her this oak is now a landmark and well looked after. Text and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed 2007. Please dont use without written permission.

Memoirs of a Japanese War Bride Art print From 1944 to the early 50’s thousands of Japanese women fell in love with servicemen, married and started new lives in alien countries. / It must have been an incredible struggle to leave their extended families, friends, country and merge into new cultures. This started out as a full length Geisha dancing but somewhere along the way this concept just grew of it’s own accord, funny how that happens;) / Mixed Media. Available as a print and card / Image copyright © 2008 Shanina Conway. / Copying and displaying or redistribution of this image without permission from the artist is strictly prohibited.

Sales of this Design? – 9 sales so far :) / ‘Asia Series’ card by Karin Taylor A more serious piece this time. A painting inspired by the art form of the Geisha. Her discipline and strength I admire. I have used ink, acrylic, charcoal and pastels to create Geisha Girl. The original painting is no longer available, but so glad she can come to you in the form of a greeting card. I hope you like her :D

my sister at her wedding (23.6.07)… / To achieve the soft focus on this photo I add a guassian blur to one of the channels (can’t remember which one), changed to sepia and then added a ‘soft light’ blending layer also a little dodging and burning… v. simple!

Stand & Deliver Moll Cutpurse is the only highway women I’ve found any reference to although I’m sure there were more…probably too smart to get caught;) Moll Cutpurse’s real name was Mary Firth, a bit of a tomboy, always ready for a rumble and happiest in the company of men. / Sources on her history are a little conflicting but she was a bit of a roguette and after pulling a big job on a Lord, brided her way of goal and the business finding it safer to work as a fence…..a fascinating character from the early 1600’s. Von kindly posted this wonderfully fitting poem / The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees, / The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas, / The road was a ribbon of moonlight, over the purple moor, / And the highwayman came riding- / Riding-riding- Available as a framed print, matted print, poster and card. Thank you to Marcus Ranum for the beautiful model. Nala kindly bubbled more info on Moll Cutpurse for history buffs

This portrait of the lovely Halley Mallison was shot during the Witching Hour in an abandoned bandshell in downtown Decatur Georgia… / I used a texture layer of ivy to enhance the ethereal and otherworldly qualities of the photo and to give it a more painting-like feel

The Huldra is a creature in Scandanavian Myth that takes on the appearance of a beautiful young woman so it can lure it’s male victims into the forest (with the promise of kinky sex no doubt!) where she devours them.. The Huldra is a shapeshifter and often is in a “inbetween” stage where half of her torso is a hollowed out tree..which she can slip in and out of as need be… Technical stuff for all you PhotoShop geeks – This took approximately 12 hours to do and has 27 layers (several of those layers are “adjustment layers” (especially using “curves”)as well as the usual texture and color overlays..) / All photographs used (model, forest background, tree trunk ,vines, and textures) were shot by me – absolutely no stock images used…
