Portrait Paintings – A popular form of art Portrait paintings are a very popular form of art. Portraits represent individuals and other object in their exact forms. These paintings are pieces of art which are worth owning. While creating portrait paintings, artists put in all their efforts to make the portraits look real. They give special attention to all the big and small details. The artists, who specialize in creating portraits, give special attention to the minute details. It makes the portraits made by them look different from the other ordinary portraits. If you want to get portrait paintings created, you can either go for photo portraits or live portraits. Photo portraits are created from photographs and live portraits are created while an individual sits in front of an artist. If you are getting your portrait created from a photograph, you should make sure that the photograph you choose is perfect for portrait commission. For a portrait to look lively it is essential that the photograph you choose is taken in natural light and there is no affect of loud camera flash. Even while creating a live portrait, the artists make sure that proper light is present, so that proper shades and colors can be applied to the portrait to give it a lively texture. The artists very carefully study their subjects and then start on their work. They give the perfect touch to the features and try to give the portraits the closest resemblance to reality. The artists try to capture the perfect emotions of the individuals in the portrait paintings so that they can draw the attention of people. They create the portraits in a manner that the eyes and smile of the individuals reflect various emotions. / While creating portrait paintings of individuals, the artists generally start with the eyes and the outlining of the head. The artists first create a rough sketch of the features with a light pencil and give the finishing touch later on. The artists finish the portraits with the hair. Portrait paintings are something which one can treasure lifelong. They reflect the beauty of an individual which photographs fail to do.

How Much Time is Enough?

This was originally written for another blob, but it probably applies to most of the artists on RB, too. My Mother died two months ago at the age of 89, and this has put me in something of a reflective mood. Her life was a long one especially for someone who was supposed to die the night she was born. At age 9, before the era of antibiotics, she almost succumbed to bacterial pneumonia. I wonder if these early experiences gave her a radically different view of the world from that of her three children. We are all in our own way hard chargers. Mother did a lot with her life, but she never agonized over success or achievement. She was extremely bright, but never particularly cared to use it or show it off to the world. She excelled intellectually when she needed to for survival or when she played cutthroat Scrabble. The rest of the time she was content to sit back and let other people garner the awards for being smart. Being constantly busy was not a priority for her. She had many stories to tell about my childhood and those of my sister and brother. The one thing that she always said about me, that stands out the most, is that I was born busy. My brother and sister always wanted to be entertained as small children. I was the one who always had more to do than I could get done in a day. Even as a toddler, I never ran out of new things to try. She could give me some cardboard boxes and an old sheet, and I’d entertain myself all day. A friend of mine once said that I had “such a curiosity” about the world. It’s becoming clear to me after reading the Redbubble journals and message boards that this is a common affliction among creative people. How do we feel like we’re making progress or even getting a little caught up? This week alone, I need to post more images, design more illustrations, work on my own website, update two types of design software and learn how to use them, back up my files, and de-frag my harddrive. Let’s don’t even go to running a house, spending time with a spouse, 3 cats, and 2 dogs, calling my daughter, calling my friends, and getting some exercise. The list goes on and on. It seems that we’re destined to never get caught up. I’m going to hate it when it’s my turn to die. It frustrates me that I may never know how “it’s all going to turn out.” Will someone who comes after me take my ideas to a new level, and I won’t get to see the results? Plus, there will always be one more shot to take and one more fractal to design. I wonder where all of this creative energy goes when it’s no longer in our bodies? Right now, I’m feeling pressured for time and more than a little stupid. We humans know so little about the universe. Let’s hope that we go to a place where we can continue to focus our creativity on discovering new and unique ways to express this drive to make things. Whatever our next life is, we probably won’t get caught up there either. Pat Ballard

I dunno. I had such an exciting year, so many good things to appreciate. Now the weather is sun shiny, warm and I can wear shorts. Or any other thing that is not much. I can sleep half naked. I am on holidays and don’t have the ’’potential’/ threat’ of being woken up to come in to work and face large groups of unknown hostile teenagers. So. Let’s get happy. I am a pretty happy person, and sometimes I don’t realize it! I’m fairly positive most of the time and can find solutions to most things, which I see as obvious, but hadn’t occurred to others, yet. I’m satisfied by the variety of means I earn my living from. How many people can say they are a this/slash that slash the other as well? I have a long list of things I do, have done, can do. I love the space I have to be creative…and to be on my own sometimes. I really enjoy ‘people’ time, but at this time of year, now I’ve caught up with my friends, and family, I am enjoying doing not much at all. It feels like a revelation. A secret that I’ve never admitted. Hilarious. I hear other people talk about it all the time! It changes from moment to moment. Can I tell you, though, now the BF’s mate is here, and they are out shopping for the third day of continuous shopping, I am so glad I have the house to myself. I have music on, playing what I want to hear, at the volume, wearing what I want to wear, not having to impress anybody. And not hearing, most importantly, swearing, cursing, damning, talk of blowing things up, or the sound of the xbox. My 36 yo BF has just bought the 360 version, and as wonderful it is to him, and his mates, I am so glad he kindly listened to me, from the edge of reason, to get earphones to go with them. I know I’ll be ok now! When we have kids, god help me if it’s not accidently broken. Permanently. Do you think anyone will mind if I go to bed early on New Year’s Eve? Will anyone care if I don’t stay up to watch fireworks. Anyhow. The year that was. If I’m going to bed early-let’s have some good memories to sleep on. Summarize. hm. Now I have tutoring set up, I feel pretty confident. There was a shaky moment mid year, where a student I felt should’ve been moved the term earlier was still with me, and his spelling was not improved…(that is a hellish moment for a teacher-you want them to improve…and if they don’t, not for lack of effort!) but the rest were all going great guns and everyone was happy. I have an awesome ‘wall of fame’ of all the students, photoshopped and glamourized. I’ve seen each student light up, seeing themselves up there. They sit there and wonder if they know them, which school do they go to and when do I have them? Anything to get out of w_erk_. But mostly, it’s fun. I have student’s who get excited about coming to maths. It’s true! (I’m feeling very happy, just thinking about it!) We play snakes n ladders (who would of thought), memory (with timestables) and pretend we are rich, adding up our fortunes (you are designer/own a horse/ artist) and paying fabulous bills (premiere in Hollywood/ horse trainers etc / paint) and make sure we come out even. We talk about a-cute angles, obese angles, I mean, obtuse…I don’t know why they teach them baby language of ‘sharp’ and blunt’ angles. Why? Learn the proper names first off. Parents say they look forward to coming to tutoring, and I get presents. How much do I love my job! Very much, actually. It’s a shame I have to catch a bus, walk, train, bus to get there-it’s not really worth the effort, pay wise, but I love going, so I’ve kept it up. See! See! lots of good things. (feeling better-I use my time wisely!) And because it’s in the afternoon, I can paint, and draw, and go for walks, and wax and move the furniture around, and feed this RB hunger. At the beginning I bought a screen printing kit, to finally, finally make those t-shirts I’d been meaning to. then RB came along-they are so much better than this hands on business! And believe me, many a happy hour, not even thinking about what I ‘should’ be doing, crossed it. I’m there! In the right place. Because that my friend, is the secret. Now, you’ve read this far. Is there more? Of course there’s more. There’s always more, always better. How much do you need to know? recap. Quickly. the BF and I (he who does not like to be named) took four months of looking, pondering, deliberating, but we found a place. We moved in. We’re satisfied. Yes, we argued, and still argued. Loudly. Nigglingly. We’ve learnt, we’re learning, and are good. I want more cleaning. I want more…? We have plenty of nights out. Plenty of nights in. We grow closer in our own company. We have friends over. No one has quite grasped talking louder, even me, and sometimes even I don’t realise how much M is missing, until he asks me to repeat myself frequently. But then he changes the batteries (to his hearing aid) and it seems to help. Funny how it’s only sometimes he misses things…there still is selective hearing. erm, oh yeah, and I got him to ask me to marry him. He graciously asked me on my birthday. Cloud nine all day and then some. I’m still pretty happy about it. Happier each day. Love him more, as much and more each day. He helps me with delivering art. For TWO exhibitions. I feel really professional now. I sold ten from the first show, and now three at Gallery 26. I did a paid photo shoot for a family-when I have done it for free too many times! I’ve sold t-shirts and cards. and have loads of beautiful photos and paintings in my collection. I feel like a real artist now. I’ve been featured on RB front page a few times, in the Mosman Daily and MX (oh funny, the girl at the bank, who I always talk to, got all mushy about how she’d seen me in it, and didn’t realise I was an artist! celebrity!) I have a website (finally!) thanks to webgrrl! Next on the list-the MCA. I just went in today-inspired, I’m back at home, painting away, and making it real. Cool. Cool bananas. At the end of the day, I’ve made lots of new friends which really has been very cool, getting out of my little bubble and into the red one. Thanks everyone who’s commented on my art, photos and t-shirts. I really like youse a lot. Hope you have a very merry new years as well. Appreciate what you’ve got. Keep on keepin it on! lotsa love, sunset.

For anybody who hasn’t had a chance to check out the winners of the Mother’s day Contest held for both the Selective Coloring Group and the Childhood Group you can see them HERE. These images really evoke such warm tender feelings and a true sense of motherhood. So much inspiration went into this contest, and it was very rewarding for me as well. While you are there, take a moment and check out the rest of my website and sign up for future news and updates. It is an interactive, resourceful, and informational site aimed to educate photographers on the art and techniques of selective coloring. Also, if you have time, sign my guestbook. I would love to hear your thoughts and if you have any suggestions on making the site even more useful and interesting.

I was on my way for a day trip to the beach. My car was full of lovely young High school ladies that I’ve had the privilege to come to know, love and mentor. They, and the others that were unable to come with us that day, allow me to be a part of their lives and we have laughed and sometimes cried together. More than just a mentor they have accepted me as friend. I thought, as we were traveling, that they are a large part of what makes my life wonderful. Something that I will look back on fondly when I’m old and grey, which can’t be measured by any wealth here on earth. Of course, this isn’t the only thing that makes my life wonderful. My Husband of 23 years and my beautiful 3 children, who are hardly children anymore. My faith in a God who is passionately in love with me and has blessed me with all these things. A passion so strong that it can’t be contained but only shared; for people, the youth, nature, music and art. The ability to not only see beauty but create it as well. And last but not least, the ability to love and be loved by so many. These are some of the things that make my life wonderful, funny how none of them include wealth, business success, achievement, possessions, or anything else that this world often promotes as what it takes to have a wonderful life. Is this a life without pain, suffering or hurt? Not at all, but with hope, faith and love, “wonderful” can still be found. What makes your life wonderful??

For many, I suppose, the choice to create art feels much more like an obligation than a choice. Some tiny flame that burned inside the artist wished to be a blazing fire, and it was only fueled by expression, and once the artist began to make the flame burn brighter, they felt more complete. At least, such is the case with me. Intimated at first by the camera in my hand, I felt small, but once I began to produce something that I and others enjoyed I felt larger than I ever had. Perhaps selfishly I choose art because I need that validation in my life. But mostly, I choose art because I have this need to give something to those who give so much to me. All of my life I have been battling illness, and within the last year I was given the diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. Finally, I have a name to put to the everyday struggle I have endured for so long. For such a long time I have felt like a burden to the ones I love. Constantly needing physical, financial and emotional support, becomes tiresome, and I often feel guilty for being the center of so many people’s live, sucking up their identity and melding it with my own. I’m sure that anyone with a chronic illness can relate. With the physical and financial inability to contribute to society in a positive manner, I, for a long time, felt like nothing more than a black hole – sucking up energy everywhere I was – a waste of space. I needed to be productive. I needed to contribute to society. I especially needed to give something back to those who have given me so much. And it was with that first compliment on a photograph, and that first smile I saw across my loved ones faces, that I knew art would be the gateway for this. When I see my husband or mother’s face light up at the sight of a piece of art I have created, I feel as though I have given back to them what I felt I had taken away. Knowing that with a click of a camera or a touch of a pencil to paper I can bring joy into someone’s life, is the ultimate satisfaction for me. This Christmas, I gave my mother a drawing I had created of the two of us “Mommy and Me”. When she opened the gift, she put her hand over her mouth and began to cry tears of joy. It is is those moments that I know why I do this. Perhaps there are other reasons, some more superficial, or some even deeper, but knowing that my art can contribute positively in someone’s life, will always be the fuel to my fire.
