Hello my name is Arthur and Art for short. This is to introduce to you a new series of work that I have been doing since I was nothing but an acorn. Oh! first off I need to say that althought I am a self made man/woman/thing I have been in graphics and design all my life as has my many relatives around this beautiful planet. I am many things in many forms but I always come back to basics. The series of works that I have produced is called Art by Body but when you see the works you might say that I got it wrong but then I was always told that I had a hard head or maybe my name is body and this is all about art. Well you decide which and I will just concentrate on the work. so stay tuned for the premier of my first piece

  • All creatures of material organism are limited to an image or form. That is to say, every created material being is possessed of one form. It cannot possess two forms at the same time. For example, a body may be triangular, spherical, square, a hexagon or an octagon, but it is impossible for a given object to be triangular and spherical simultaneously; it cannot possess two shapes at one time. It may be either triangular or square. If it is to become square it must first rid itself of the triangular shape. It is absolutely impossible for it to be a square and triangular at the same time. That is to say, in the reality of the creatures the different forms cannot be simultaneously possessed. But in the reality of man all geometrical figures can be simultaneously conceived. In other realities one image must be forsaken in order that another might be possible. This is the law of change and transformation, and change and transformation are harbingers of mortality. Were it not for change and transformation in form, phenomena would be immortal, but because phenomena are subject to change and transformation from one figure or shape to another, they are mortal. But the reality of man is possessed of all virtues; he does not have to give up one image for another as other mere bodies do. Therefore in that reality there is no change and transformation; there it is immortal and everlasting. .... the body of man may be in America but his spirit laboring and working in the far East, discovering, organizing and systematizing. Although governing, making laws, erecting a building in Russia, his body is still here in America. What is this power, which notwithstanding it is embodied in America, is still working in the east, organizing, systematizing, destroying, upbuilding? It is the spirit of man. This is irrefutable. When you wish to reflect upon or consider a matter you consult something within you. You say, shall I do it, or shall I not do it? Is it better to do this or abandon it? Whom do you consult? Who is within you deciding this question? Surely there is a distinct power, a distinct ego. Were it not distinct from your ego you would not be consulting it. It is greater than the faculty of thought. It is your spirit which teaches you, which inspires and decides upon matters. Who is it that interrogates? Who is it that answers? There is no doubt that it is the spirit and that there is no change or transformation there, for it is not composed of composite elements; and anything that is not composed of elements is eternal. Change and transformation are peculiarities of composition. There is no change and transformation in the spirit. In proof of this the body may become weakened in its members…… The mind decides, the thought is perfect and yet the hand is withered, the feet have become useless, …. but the spirit is in the same status. Dismember a healthy man—the spirit is not dismembered….. He may become lame, the spirit is not affected. The spirit is ever the same; no change or transformation can you perceive, and because there is no change or transformation, it is everlasting and permanent. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá / From a talk given at the Theosophical Society Boston, Mass. July 24, 1912.

FATU HIVA is found within the chain of islands called today The Marquesas! Te Henua Enana/Te fenua Enata, “the land of men” – most people know these chain of islands as the Marquesas (Îles Marquises), named such, after Spanish explorer A’lvaro de Mendana de Neira who reached them in 1595. Naming them such after the Viceroy of Peru – “Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, Marquis of Canete”. The Land of men is broken into three respective groupings based on dialect of language, the southern islands being – Eiao , Hatutu, Motu Iti, Motu ‘Oa, Motu One, Nuku Hiva, and Ua Pou. The Northern islands with – Fatu Hiva, Fatu Huku, Hiva ‘Oa, Moho Tani, Motu Nao, Tahuata and Terihi. Ua Huka whilst being usually placed within the northern group is better explained as transitional and therefore forming the third group. Long before Paul Gauguin, Herman Melville or Robert Louis Stevenson layed heart, hands and eyes upon the “Te Henua Enana”, The Marquesans were exsisting within the frame work of a highly developed society, a culture of intricate and artistic type that reflected the dictates of its environment. My Interests as much as they are cultural and to simply look upon the sheer marvel of its natural beauty, are the peoples a depth artistic forms that have transfixed many since its exposure to the rest of the world! As Paul Gauguin gave his letter reader insight to………. ” The people in Europe do not seem to realize that both the Maori’s of New Zealand and the Marquesans had evolved a very advanced type of decorative art.” “The Marquesans especially have a extraordinary sense of decoration. Give a Marquesan an object of any geometric shape, even hump backed, rounded geometry, and he will manage to make everything harmonious without leaving any shocking and disparate empty place.” “…………………….. let’s get back to Marquesan art!” To Avant et Apres, Although history has subjected much upon the people of the Marquesas, its population is ever increasing and its arts have reborn, a strong sense of being “Te Henua Te Nana” is at the foremost of their minds. Whilst Samoa is called the heart of Polynesia, the Marquesas can be liken to the veins from which the blood flows – it is indeed an all important link to the character, arts and culture of the entire dynamics of Polynesia – once a forgotten place, it is again an emerging nation, on its journey as a people and an island group! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>xxxxxxx<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< The Marquesas to me is a place unlike many – its geography, its art and history is sublime and its inspiration immeasurable to me! For years i sought to depict its charm and intensity, and the need to do so just hasn’t ended ~! :) go here to veiw the stages of a paintings development i have been working on! It is almost finished now! – hahahh! >>> http://mikeyfreedom.wordpress.com/2007/09/08/fatu-hiva/ <<<<<<<<<

Whither can a lover go but to the land of his beloved? and what seeker findeth rest away from his heart’s desire? To the true lover reunion is life, and separation is death. His breast is void of patience and his heart hath no peace. A myriad lives would he forsake to hasten to the abode of his beloved. Baha’u’lláh 1817-1892 All that we perceive is in a state of movement and constant change yet we yearn to find and comprehend eternal essences in an attempt to reveal the purpose and permanence of our own being. We are like migrants along the way of search ever hopeful of a meaningful reunion, a home coming some day into the loving embrace of a benign creator. the apparent contradiction of an immortal soul forced to dwell for a time in an ephemeral world is a recurring theme in my work. In an ever evolving visual language I strive to explore the relationship between that which is eternal and beyond the changes and chances of this world and so in its essence beyond our grasp and that which exists for a mere brief moment of time. To speak of these things I combine elements derived from different levels of creation. In my work you can find forms that recall cells and bacteria, atoms and elements, flows of energy, water and blood, you can find plant like forms and flower petals, the wind, the rain, the sea, landscapes and horizons, bird and animal forms, planets and suns in formation. All of these things are interconnected through the force of attraction, all pushing and pulling, coming and going, high and low, near and far, Related to this are other themes concerning the relationship between sacrifice and suffering with the growth of faith and the nobility of the soul of man. Themes of martyrdom and celebration, love and devotion, life after death, return and reunion are present. Transformation of the human heart, quickening of the spirit, acceptance and forgiveness, the baring of our wounds on the path of healing, the transmutation of base materials through the fire into precious metals all speak of the pain and joy of life. How through our senses we understand and perceive and yet by those very senses we are veiled from higher access to the higher reality of things. Like the child in the womb of the mother ( from whom it receives its food and life) is veiled by the wall of the womb to knowledge of the outer world. Using the freedom of a post-modern environment I call upon a fusion of styles, techniques and approaches to speak of the many layers of reality and perception. I use print techniques such as silk-screen, mono-print and etching along with the discipline of painting, often together with mark-making. repetitive patterns, decorative elements, collage and photography. . In a more recent approach I have been employing electronic and digital devices (pl moblie telephone camera, scanner, printer, computer) in the creation of ‘electrogaphic’ artwork. Yet in so doing I do not merely want to reproduce imagery from the natural world but rather use a language that tries to remain inherently loyal to itself. the discipline of hard edges and inserts are juxtaposed against the organic flow or migration of matter whether gas, liquid or solid. the use of panels, inserts and borders reflects a fascination with the beauty and timeless quality of religious paintings of different cultures whether it be the triptychs of the church or the multiple panels of Chinese and Japanese art and spirituality. Along with calligraphic marks my work has an iconic and religious feel without direct or obvious reference to religious imagery and symbolism. A feel neither of the east nor the west. Of interest is the expansive beauty of the Great Hungarian Plain. How the sky, its light and atmosphere touch the earth. Particularly at the beginning and close of the day the sky and the earth inform each other of their colours and forms. Distant horizons and long lights and shadows are all important. These times and those of the first rays of light after the storm speak to us of contentment and hope, they allow for medative reflection and an inner hidden migration away from the activity of a frenetic world

The ocean wild and free, depicts our own freedom, under the law, but free in spirit. To make a Seascape come alive, the best medium to use is oil. 4 layers of it. To imaging yourself on the bottom of the fathomless sea, then ascending, using the colors accordingly, from the darkest to the very lightest on the surface, no white colors whatsoever to be mixed into these pure colors, that way using the opaque colors on the bottom of the ocean and the transparent on the surface, you will get a seascape, of clear water, three dimensional, where you can actually look into the depths.
