This is my favorite photo of all! There is a wild red rose by my kitchen door. Late one afternoon, I was clipping tired blooms from the clusters; some clusters were hanging down. As I reached for this one to turn it over, a glimpse of gold flashed in the low sun. I looked again and discovered this tiny little frog napping in the heart of the bloom. I had only the negative and a small digital file from a scan, and it has taken me a month to get it into the appropriate high-resolution format where I can finally offer it for sale! This door detail was photographed in Avanos, a small town in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey. The bright colors and old wood of houses and doors in these small towns are often beautiful and always intriguing. The splintered wood, tooled brass lock and handle, and encroaching shadow give this piece a sense of mystery for me.

Recently we did a test shoot for two really funny and crazy guys who also happen to make music together, Jase and Tom after their manager aeris saw my stuff on RedBubble and decided I am shit hot at what I do. (I’m working on the modesty bit, I swear.) Anyway they really really didn’t want to do a photo shoot in a smelly, public, and damp mens’ toilet so naturally I nagged at them until they relented. Then the first thing their manager said upon viewing this image was “That one’s for RedBubble!” So here it is.

Balanos was one of eight daughters of Oxylus and Hamadryas, a Dryad nymph born bound for life to an Oak tree, such that, when the tree died, as did Balanos. / From the world of the great Oak, we are left with a carpet of moss – millenia of parallel evolution, dependant on the waters of life… When an Oak is no more, the 600 plus species which depend on it usually follow.

This door handle was photographed in the Turkish town of Beypazari, settled in the hills of the Central Anatolian plateau. The town is full of centuries-old wooden Ottoman houses, some restored and some still in their original state. This door obviously hasn’t seen any restoration work, but to me the faded paint and decaying wood only add to its fascination.
