  • The Newest Unveiling From Carrie Glenn Studios
    by Carrie Glenn

I am proud to unveil my newest creation titled Coy Kiss / I have been working on this over the last several months and have finally birthed it as of last night. There are many layers and texture. This painting literally changes and comes alive in different lighting. I used acrylic and some other mediums to slow the drying process. After it was done I finished the water in my painting with gloss varnish in certain areas to achieve water highlights…so it actually appears like the water is real…and perhaps that there is even movement in it. This is a special piece to me, there is a lot of symbolism and beauty in Koi fish to me. Also I am drawn to fish in general and life in water. / The bright contrasting colors and dead space of this work is what attracted me to it in the first place. I want to say a special “Thank You” to Rebecca Cruz who let me paint her photo titled Koi As I was creating the name for it, the play on words for “Coy” just kept coming to my heart. Thus “Coy Kiss”! / There is a written work from Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare, that I chose to describe my work. I feel it perfectly captures my heart for this piece and the moment… ...”Never did passenger in summer’s heat / More thirst for drink than she for this good turn. / Her help she sees, but help she cannot get; / She bathes in water, yet her fire must burn: / ‘O! pity,’ ‘gan she cry, ‘flint-hearted boy: / ‘Tis but a kiss I beg; why art thou coy?”... It was a wonderful piece to work on and I put a lot of myself into it…hopefully you can feel that coming through to you. / To check it out and leave a comment click here Enjoy! xoxo

a few days ago, i was asked by a client of mine, (without seeing them) whether i did Geishas, or just “girls in kimonos?” (ouch!) i knew what he was getting at…. I’m not implying that my artworks are traditional Geishas (the word geisha is made up of two – Gei = art and Sha = expert) / – i know that there’s a lot to pay attention to when drawing traditional geishas, such as the colour of the colar (show that stage they are at in their training) and the kanzashi in their hair, etc, etc not tying to offend anyone, nor create a stir, but just endulging in the art, with a culture i’m interested in/drawn to. if anyone knows of a slip up in my kanji, please let me know :) would love to hear about it. i actually think that they’re very far from the traditional, and more on the risqué side of things, what with their wild hair, visable tattoos, cleavage, drug references and clothes hanging off…. “some” might say they’re all representations of my id, while “others” just call them chicks in kimonos! ;)

  • Am I an Artist??
    by heartco

Hello friends, / I am feeling somewhat frustrated at the moment, it could be the pending full moon, or maybe not….

Hello friends, / I am feeling somewhat frustrated at the moment, it could be the pending full moon, or maybe not. I seem to be questioning my art, my style, as I am entering more exhibitions and finding no sales and no prizes. It is all contemporary, abstract, conceptual etc that wins. No traditional realist stuff. Even the traditional shows are now ‘broadening their horizons’ to include non traditional. Why? There are already so many contemporary exclusive or preferred shows with abstracts and the like. / I find myself asking ‘am I a true artist or is what I do no more than a ‘job’ I enjoy.’? I understand the diversity of art and I appreciate and enjoy many styles. But sometimes I just can’t understand what sells and wins. These days the art that does sell and win needs a brochure to explain what it is and what it means. Sooo, I am seriously asking myself ‘WHAT IS ART’?? I am not educated in art. (maybe thats the problem) I don’t know who is who in art. Therefore, apparently, I can hardly call myself a professional artist. / I just love to draw and paint. I love colour and using it in and on many mediums. I love to see beauty in all that is around me and reproduce that (coz that is essentially what I do most of the time….copy) / Is realist art going out of style? Old fashioned? Will it even be classed as ‘art’ in the future? Just my 2 cents worth. Your opinions are welcome :)

I just created my very first calendar on RB! It is a collection of portraits of animals, several actors and actresses, and some of my original work. / I used images that received the most positive feedback, with my House drawing being the cover image. Unfortunately some of the images that I wanted to include were too low of a resolution, so I could not add them (such as the “Hat” and “Colorful” pastel drawings). I would appreciate any feedback on the collection/arrangement of images, and if there is anything else from my gallery that you think I should have included, please let me know :) Olga

  • So what kind of art is it going to be?

Many of my collectors have come to appreciate my work through the abstracts I have been working on for the last few years. I also have a base of clients who have long enjoyed the representational work I do and at the same time there are others who respond strongly to my Asian-inspired brushwork. So, what is going on here? Some have asked about my varied styles of work. Shouldn’t I just pick one? Do I have a problem making a decision? I realize that from the outside it must be somewhat confusing. So, I decided I should explain a little about my art and where it comes from. Most artists develop a style, then focus on that style, refining it, and simultaneously guiding and being guided by that particular style. The style of art that a particular artist works in, becomes their mode of expression, of documenting their relationship to a particular thought or idea. If the artist is serious about their work, their style will evolve over time, sometimes dramatically, other times very subtly. Perhaps because I am a self-taught artist, my style developed out of an intuitive relationship to my art, rather than from any formal structure. From an early age I felt a need to express myself through art, even if at the time, I wasn’t quite sure what it was (or that I was) expressing. My deep love of nature gave me a subject to focus on as I learned different tools and mediums to create my works of art. I even turned to writing for some time, when I felt my relationship to art becoming strained and forced. To me abstract, representational, or brush painting styles are all very strongly connected. They do not appear very different to me at all. I have called myself an interstitial artist, because I never felt I could classify my art within a particular group. Lately, I have been thinking about the idea of my art being intuitive. Perhaps Intuitive-Interstitial? But, why apply any labels? Regardless of what I am creating, I strive for the piece to be authentic. I utilize a lot of meditation, either before or during my painting that helps to keep me connected to that authentic source, be it Spirit, God, Unity (again, more labels). The art I create is challenging. It pushes me. Sometimes it is agonizing, verging on painful, but when the painting is finished and it successfully resonates with that authenticity, I experience joy. This joy grows stronger when I learn that my work reaches and affects others in a positive way. I know then, that I listened well to that inner voice and remained true to the Source that makes each of us both unique and the same. Originally, when I posted my work on my website, I grouped it all together because, to me, it all seemed the same. However, I realize that the connection, from the outside viewer, may not be so clear. But please don’t let the separate galleries keep you from seeing those relationships. If you go to my page on Fine Art America (http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/doan-art.html) you will see that I didn’t separate my work. Each piece on that site has a description about it that gives background about the development and what the painting means to me. Perhaps, from there, you too will see that each piece is both unique and the same. DoAn / (www.doanart.blogspot.com) / (You can also see my work here at RedBubble, and at my website www.doanart.com)

VISUAL ARTS: Louise Martin-Chew | July 31, 2008 The Australian Xstrata Coal Emerging Indigenous Art Award 2008 Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. Until October 12. / THE third year of the Queensland Art Gallery’s emerging indigenous art award again has a focused selection of innovative contemporary art, showing several works from 10 artists. And emerging doesn’t necessarily mean young: work from 98-year-old Loongkoonan hangs alongside that of 20-year-old Beaver Lennon. The two previous award winners worked in non-traditional media: Jonathan Jones with a sculptural installation using light bulbs; and Genevieve Grieves with a moving video installation, Picturing the Old People. Following these two, the 2008 winner, Gunybi Ganambarr, would appear at first glance to be a more traditional choice. Closer inspection reveals that, with his winning work, innovation continues to dominate this award. Ganambarr is from the Ngaymil people of Arnhem Land. His Burrut’tji at Baraltja tells of the lightning serpent Mandukul, an important Yolngu story. He uses the local bark painting tradition but there is significant innovation in the way the bark is carved and incised and filled with pigment, lifting the visual dynamics. The work is large (2.19mx91cm) and its sinuous and undulating line makes for compelling viewing. Ganambarr’s other work, which includes memorial poles (also subtly coloured and incised), suggests he has a strong future. Books feature in Archie Moore’s entries: the Bible in his Maltheism series and an art book showing a reproduction of Albert Namatjira’s work in Sacred Sights (The First Intervention). In most of these works, a church is constructed from the pages of the open book: small, delicately made and seemingly humble, their conceptual strength is drawn from the pairing of text and paper sculpture. The reference to Namatjira is intriguing alongside Lennon’s super-real landscapes, which share something of Namatjira’s palette and the picturesque tradition. The range is extensive: Glenn Pilkington’s digital abstractions from the city; married couple Josie Kunoth Petyarre and Dinni Kunoth Kemarre’s roughly carved and painted depictions of football players, the local police Toyota and a horse and cowboy; and more traditional paintings from Daniel Walbidi, Patsy Marfura and Milly Kelly. This is the final year of the Xstrata award and the QAG Gallery of Modern Art, perhaps continuing the theme of innovation, is looking at a different approach to presenting contemporary indigenous art.

WHAT DO THEY THINK THAT MEANS? / I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER FIRSTLY AND MOSTLY. I CONSIDER IT “ART” SINCE NOT “JUST ANYONE” CAN JUST PICK UP A CAMERA AND COME OUT WITH SOMETHING AESTHETICALLY PLEASING….IN OTHER WORDS, IT TAKES TALENT AND INSPIRATION JUST LIKE IT DOES TO CREATE A PAINTING. AS I SEARCH FOR NEW GROUPS TO JOIN I SEE THIS MENTIONED AND I JUST THINK IT IS RUDE TO MENTION IT AND EXCLUDE IT SO HARSHLY. I’D LIKE TO SEE SOME PAINTERS MAKE IT HAPPEN LIKE WE DO ON FILM! SHUTTERBUGS ROCK!
