When you first arrive in Chloride you will see the welcome sign to your right. Beside the Welcome sign, you will see this mural. It has had its share of desert heat an wear, but it introduces you to the people and spirit of the town. A fun place with a lot of fun people. I had several people ask how it got its name so I did some research and here is what I learned. Depending on what you read or to whom you speak, Chloride had its beginnings in the early 1860s – 1862 or 1863. The reason for its beginning is pretty well agreed upon. Silver, Silver Chloride! Hence, the name of the village….Chloride. Many metals were actually mined in Chloride including gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, molybdenum, and vanadium with silver being the predominate ore. Soldiers from Fort Mohave were more interested in the gold and silver than maintaining law and order. Until a peace treaty was signed with the Native Americans, no one else was too interested in the area until after 1870. / Chloride, Arizona HDR enhanced This is the second of a series about the mining town of Chloride, Arizona. The transcendental art of fire dancing, combined with a backdrop of stark, urban-industrial desolation. / The background represents the state of one’s life (like the inside of their mind) and the subject twirling fire represents the transmuting of this apathy of existence into the realization that there is so much more to life and the Universe than what is going on in their head.

I may have mentioned that I’ve been digitizing a big back catalouge of analouge images and finding all sorts of odd forgotten images like this one. This young sporano was about to put on a vastly elaborate headdress and go out and knock them dead at the Sydney Trade Union Club some time in the early eighties I think, Analouge of course and the film is Ilford FP4.

We took a drive out to a great little town called Chloride, Arizona located out off of Hwy 93 a couple of weeks ago. Met some great people there and had a great day. Plan to go back and get some shots of the gunfights and entertainment that is part of the town’s culture. This is a capture of the sign entering into Chloride. This old mining town, located between Kingman, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada, was founded in 1862 with the discovery of silver. Chloride once had a 75 mines in operation and a population of over 2,000. Today, artists, writers, musicians and craftsmen have shops and studios in the old historic buildings. This is the first of a series about the mining town of Chloride, Arizona. I will continue with more information in each posting.
