This image started from a 1966 pencil sketch and water color. In many ways it’s the companion piece to the poinsettias (uploaded a few days ago and thoroughly described in its description, see my profile for this fascinating story ;-)), since I drew this as the Christmas card I’d send my parents the next year. / The original was framed by my parents, but over the years has faded and the image was just too dull to justify uploading to RB. So I made adjustments! / First I imported my photo into Photo-Shop (PS) and cropped the frame away. Then I experimented with the ‘filter’ settings, some for the first time. I tried quite a few options, saving about a dozen different layers. I also had fun combining some of the effects into their own layer. Some of the drawing details and highlights were lost in the process though. So selecting colors from the work I used a fine ‘brush’ tool and added back or emphasized what I thought was needed in the now ‘new’ rendering of hibiscus. / Also as you can see the background changed from a faded yellowing non-acid free bit of drawing paper into the golden back drop it is in the new PS adjusted image. So, when I dragged my adjusted image up onto my stock RB card blank and then changed its size with the ‘transform’ setting, it did not fit the proportion of the card. There were unwanted uneven white borders. So again for the first time I experimented with the ‘magic halo tool’ and copied areas of the background and pasted them over the unwanted white borders. I did not want to change the proportions of the original flower image and wanted it placed on the card right where it is. So the copy and paste routine worked out for me, though I had to fiddle to remove edges of some of these maneuvers. / AND, that’s the truth and the whole truth, shmg!
To create this Mixed Media Relief Print, I used block prints that I carved by hand from linoleum…I have quite a collection now in various subjects….it’s a long and for me quite a difficult process, but incredibly rewarding…the ones I used here have to do with the sea, and include fish, waves, letters, birds, and other more abstract lines and circles… / I wanted to create a collection of loose and random images together, like the weathered boards we sometimes see by the sea or in fish shops, where the signs are often crudely lettered offering the catch of the day...it’s the start of my new tropical collection to be continued in 2010..
