I have always had a fascination with ships and the ocean. Detail and craftsmanship of these old wooden vessels is sensational. Whether they were pirates, fisherman, sailors or just adventurous men who sought out adventure on the high seas they always took pride in their vessels. . / . / Lisa C. As I sit on the stern of my ship, I think of yester morn when all was good. / We’d traveled a long voyage. / My men grew as mates. / Bounds of treasures we’d found made for a drunkered night. / But of night last, a squall came upon us and two overboard. / As fast as the wind arose, and water rushed over was my men gone. / My ship tossed from port to starboard we hadnt time to turn her a bow. / Till late we search, not a thread to be found. / Not a sail touched, nor a rope broke it was like a dream gone arye. / So i drop these two coins in memberance into the sea, to ye brave men who gave their lives, / and promise to add a share to their families as deserved. / Now its time to set sail homeward….. / Steady as she goes…..through the Calm Sea At Dawn. The Sea Venture was one of the first ships to arrive in Bermuda. It was thrown accidentally off course by a hurricane and landed on the reefs intact. Its original course was with a fleet from England headed towards / Jamestown, Virginia to aid in the colonization. From being shipwrecked, the crew and passengers of the Sea Venture settled in Bermuda and benefitted from its tropical paradise and set up a small colony. This painting is a Mixed Media piece, combining original digital photography taken in Bermuda by SBC, painting, and drawing. It is intended to capture the natural and surreal beauty of Bermuda. It won an Honorable Mention Award in the Rowayton Art Show in 2006 and First Place in the Darien Art Show in 2007. Thank you for your interest, comments and purchases!

Built 1930-31, Royal Shipyard (formerly), Castellamare di Stabia. and carried out many voyages before World War II. The period of the war was the only time the ship has not been active. The elegant, three-mated full rigger serves as the training vessel of the Italian Naval Academy.The entire rig and all the sheets are traditional materials: Canvas sails and hemp ropes. The only synthetic on board is the mooring lines, which have to be an approved type for some of the ports they visit. The sheets, laid end to end, span 35 km. Photo taken from the bridge (deck 6) of our trusty little ship Polar Pioneer while crossing Drakes Passage. It was taken one handed as I held on for grim death with the other, lol. The ship was built as an ice breaker, as a result it has a much more rounded hull and NO stabilisers. During the first 24 hours of the crossing we had constant 8 meter seas coming at a 45 degree angle on the port beam. During the second 24 hours nothing much had changed except the seas had increased to 10+ meters.
