This image grew organically from the “Chiefs wife”. I was thinking of the regal aloof nature of the African queen, which I had drawn earlier and then I thought of the scary twighlight world of the Sangoma, or witchdoctor, in juxtapostion to this calmer world. Sort of like the yin/yang, good and evil aspects that co-exist within each of us.

Forteana / Available as an art print, poster and card. Charles Fort was a Dutch-American writer who has inspired sci-fi writers with his wild and often visionary glimpses into the future. Today the word Fortean has come to mean anomalous phenomena. Fort was fascinated with UFO’s, the existence of other worlds and he predicted the space race, and how space travel would someday become commercialized. / Stephen King used the works of Charles Fort in The Firestarter, and his influenced many writers and his influence can be seen in Hellboy, the Necronauts, The Morning of the Magicians and if you get a chance to read his works, you’ll find even more instances where he has influenced popular culture. / !Image copyright © 2008 Shanina Conway. / Copying and displaying or redistribution of this image without permission from the artist is strictly prohibited

The inspiration for this design came from a piece of driftwood I saw on my evening walk. I photographed the log and then “sculpted it” later, using digital tools and a graphics tablet. It reminded me of one of the many wooden carvings done by rural people across Africa.
