Lately I’ve been extremely busy with my art making practices as the end of my Advanced Diploma approaches it’s close. I admit I have not been as active on here as much as I would have liked. Not posting works regularly, neglecting my group, not replying to the wonderful feedback I have recieved. Well firstly I would like tp say thanks to all those who have left comments on my work (especially after I was featured on the homepage recently), I always appreciate them deeply and they help me carry on. And secondly, once my diploma is complete I will be doing a mass upload of all the works I have completed this semester so you can have a chance to see what I have been up to all this time. So hopefully I will survive the next few weeks and see you all on the otherside! / Mathew

Hello all, As you may have noticed, my comments are coming in slowly… I’m just in a panic because there are a lot of things which I have to get ready for before school. But at the same time I still want to do art. I was so happy to find this community and do art again; I haven’t enjoyed art this much since high school. In my university program there are no summer vacations; school and internships rotate constantly. In school I’m always too busy to do any of my own art, and during internships, if I’m working in another city I spend the time sight seeing. I worked in Toronto this time because I needed to save money in order to afford my upcoming exchange in Rome starting in September. During this time I decided to do more art again, and had more time for it because this internship is 8 months whereas my previous ones were only 4 months; then I found this lovely community. Now time is flying by and I hope to complete more pieces before I head off, though consequently that means I have less time to look and comment on new works, but I hope everyone understands… this is my only chance to enjoy doing art this much. I will still comment on your work, but just not as quickly and frequently. I may instead decide to visit your profiles and look through your portfolio rather than looking at what’s new. So my plan is that I’ll try to comment in the morning when I arrive at work, and after work, I’ll do what I need to do, and also do my art. I expect most of the new things will be miniature origami; it seems to be the most popular among my work; though I apologize to those who maybe tired of it :P Thank you everyone for being such wonderful people. I just know there will be days in school where I’ll need to get away from all the stress, and talk to people who I don’t see every single day. I hope you’ll all still be there for me then~ My love to you all…

Once again, The Fixer himself Tom was my lyrical cohort this week for your Friday Grist. Now, I dont mean to to suggest that everyone thats been to or studied at an art institution is indeed an asscock, but some are more pre disposed to it than others. Generally speaking. The said brand of cock-fiddlers were the source of many rolled eyes and many lolz. There was a particular fellow I remember from my brief stint, he was a large heavy set fellow, smelled of cigarettes and body ordure, whom I never saw actually work, ever. I only ever saw him in the tiny filth encrusted courtyard chain smoking while tiny flocks of emo’s huddled around his pungent glow. I garnered from his pants he was a painter, but I saw little evidence of it. But thats an extreme example of it, the design and multimedia kid where fine, too meek to utter a word above a tiny frail whisper. The staff were old washed out has beens, save for 2 which imparted words which have resonated in my fickle brain. Geez I miss that place sometimes. Asscocks and all.

I just got my nails done :) So I’m typing this really slowly and carefully. My formal is tomorrow night (just the year 11 one). Excitement! Dread! I ♥ my dress. But anyway, you don’t know this, but i was stressed out for like 2-3 weeks last term, deliberating over whether I was going to drop ancient history or art (I love them both). Maybe you’ll be happy that i finally picked art in the end lol. However i have no ideas for my major work at all and this is the whole point of this entry really, girlish things aside. What do you look to for inspiration? Because I’m in dire need of some right about now.

Turner to Monet, Archibalds, Redbubblers and Art School

Recently Dennis and I attended the major exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, “Turner to Monet- the triumph of landscape painting”...which was just awesome. The Prime Minister descibed it as “the most comprehensive survey of nineteenth century Western landscape painting ever assembled and showcases Australian landscape painting of the nineteeth century in an international context”. It drew works from around the world and the GNA produces excellent quality catalogue books which are a good resource and a wonderful reminder of the event. There was an extensive representation of artists, Monet, Tuner, Constable, Gauguin, van Gogh, Cezanne, Serusier, Seurat, Courbet, Daubigny, Dahl, Martens, Palmer, Glover and many others, including a few of the Australian works of Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton ~ they were all fabulous…but some works particularly struck me -Nicholas Chevalier’s “Mount Arapiles and the Mitre Rock”... “Bush fire between Mt Elephant and Timboon 1857” by Eugene von Guerard and of course Turner’s marvellous works as he progressed toward more abstract painting. I am a big Constable fan, my dad having come from the south of England, and was not disappointed with the works of his exhibited. His “Leaping horse” was a treat to behold but I think my favourite of the day was a small Constable of “Brighton Beach”. I am still, two months later, absorbing the impact the exhibition had on me. Last Friday Dennis and I drove up to Goulburn (about 1.5 hours up the highway from us) to see the exhibition of this year’s Archibald finalists as it travels around New South Wales. For those outside Australia, the Archibald is Australia’s premier portrait competition which has been going for over a hundred years. We enjoyed the exhibition very much. I had seen a picture of this year’s winning entry in an art magazine and didn’t like it much, but of course, seeing it full size in real life changed that. Del Kathryn Barton’s work “Your are what us most beautiful about me, a self portrait with Kell and Arella” is a really interesting multimedia piece with very distinctive style. I very much enjoyed Peteris Ciemitis’s work “Grabowsky”, the famous Australian pianist and composer. Yi Wang’s self portrait was also a wonderful piece, highlighting his juxtaposition between western and oriental art. What made it even better, was the company. We had arranged to meet a fellow redbubbler, Seraphina6, who lives in Goulburn, for the first time. We recognised each other from our bubble profiles, and had a lovely lunch, talking ten to the dozen, before attending the exhibition together. It was really special to meet another bubbler with whom I had corresponded by bubblemail….outside of the world of bubble! We had a lovely time together and it was great to look at the paintings and share our impressions. I wrote in my bubble journal after I saw a D’Arcy Doyle exhibition earlier in the year, I think, about whether I had it in me, to put in the time and effort to become a serious artist. Well, thanks to encouragement from Seraphina…I came home on Friday night full of renewed fire and passion and first thing Saturday morning I enrolled at Curtin Uni to do a fine art degree! I can do it online, which is great for me living in the bush. And my newly met dear friend Seraphina is also doing the course, so we will be great study buddies for each other. I finish my two year Diploma of Professional Counselling on August 30 and begin a BA (Art) on Setpember 1…so that will keep me busy for another three years. I turn 50 next week and it seems a good time to take on a new career direction!

So today was the start of my second week at uni studying a bachelor in visual communication (arts) majoring in photography. What can I say… 3 intense years to go! I’ve been introduced to the world of illustrator, and seemingly to the world of photoshop where intricate selections are mandatory… and behold, philosophy is part of my study schedule. Other than that I’m loving experimenting with the new tools I’ve been introduced to, and hopefully you will see more and more t-shirt designs that entice. More on the subject of photography, I’ve been doing some assisting work and have contacted a major production company in Sydney to get some more (fingers crossed). No camera work at uni until next semester or the one after, so unless I get some spare time, it’ll be vector t-shirts and vector/photoshop art for your viewing pleasure. Keep buying the t-shirts and feel free to send me requests as I need to practice some more, and then some, and be introduced to the world of ‘creative direction’.

...may have been someone who posed or at least were asked to draw a fellow-pupil, at least twice or more during the year. / .. / I always got one of the pupils to pose, on a desk, with hands on hips, feet a little apart and talked about how many heads there were in the whole body of the model. / About the spaces between the body and the elbows betwen the legs. Etc. / Later the finer details. Eyes, nose, mouth, hair, fingers, etc.. / ... / This must have been a later lesson. I even spuspect it was when we had clubs and the children could nominate a club (activity) that they wanted to join. / ... / I always sketched also and usually gave the finihed product to the child(ren) who posed. / Don’t know why I still have this one. / ... /

After lunch, today, I’ll drive to Surf Rd, in Cronulla and collect my five framed paintings. / Then drive to Short Street, Oyster Bay and drop them off at the public school. (Today there is a teachers’ strike.) / / Last year was the first time that I entered paintings in the 37th Annual Oyster Bay Art and Craft Festival. A clever way to raise funds for that school. / Retired from 37 years of teaching primary school kids, it felt funny, to cross right through a busy playground, full of kids, after a break of seven years, looking after very elderly parents. (Unbelievable. Seven years, already?) / I parked beside the playground and there were some girls sitting at the gate, obviously having fun, directing lost souls, like me and I turned into a school-teacher again. / / Hard to describe what it’s like to be in that atmosphere again (of running, playing, laughing, shouting, talking, moving kids) after six years of hospital visits, nursing homes, and being with people in their eighties. / / It happened again, last night. I rang the school. I had rung the home of one of the organisers. A very polite young lady explained that her mother was at the school, getting things ready and could ring back later that night. So I took a punt and yes, the principal answered the phone. / / It happened again. The lost feelings returned. Mark and I had shared refereeing our school soccer teams quite a few times, through the years. / Our schools are located only about two suburbs apart. / His wife and I have taught at that school for quite a few years. / For a few minute I was a chalkie again. / / All five paintings are of children I’ve known. Although two of the paintings are of a fictional child: Remi, from Alleen Op De Wereld, by Hector Malot (translated from Sans Famille.) (Alone in the World, read to me by my mother, several times over in the 1940s.) / / The girl in the portrait (now seven years older) knows she’ll be hung. I found her (No thanks to The Body Shop, in Miranda), in the phonebook. / Two girls, in the group painting may just be surprised, if they still live in the area and happen to visit the fair. ** / It’s all good fun. /

Did it last year, for the first time. Plan to do it again, this May. / Shall submit five paintings and walk around there a lot, on May 23 ( from 7:30 p.m..) and May 24 and 25, 2008, again. / Take some photos and particularly have a look at how my paintings shape up to the competition. / First heard of (read about) this annual event when my children were very little. / So little that there weren’t very many places we could go. / Saw the ad. for it in the local paper and thought that an art exhibition and ‘fair’, held, at a public school would surely be child-friendly and it was. / Last year it was fun to meet up with two colleagues there too. / They were the principal and his wife. / He and I had shared refereeing the soccer games, quite a few times, when his teams played against mine and she and I worked at the same school for most of the last eleven years of my teaching career. / .... / At this stage I’m thinking of entering this painting: / / (Two of the three girls don’t live too far away from the venue. Hopefully they’ll be having a look. / .... / And this one: / / She too, as far as I know, lives not too far away either. It would be fun to find out what she thinks of the painting. / I have tried to contact her via the shop where I met up with her, in December. Whether these people passed on my phone number, I don’t know. / ... / Art prizes are $100. / Major prize: (Judges Choice) $500 / .... / Funds raised are of course for improvements to the local children’s education. / .... / Entries close 5 May.

As an unschooled photographer I don’t consider myself self taught. I worked for and was trained by a lot of great photographers. It is this training I wrestle with. I approach photography as: problems requiring solutions. This especially as a result of working years in advertising, a very muscular venue for image making. You can really get off on it. But something essential was transmuted in the process. Maybe this is how some people feel about school. You’re grateful because it made you strong and gets you accepted, but for what, if the process isn’t yours? As a painter, I am self taught, or self teaching. Most of the work is simple abstractions, mixed with photography or collage, and mostly a study of textures and tone. Paint is magic. No matter how I feel, I can always paint.

Some things are too difficult to express in words. As writers, we try to communicate the uncommunicat-able, the inexpressible. We try, and it is the greatest among us that get the closest to the Truth, that reach the closest to the hearts of our readers. However, no amount of words from inside of me can express what I feel at this moment. My poem Stop(http://www.redbubble.com/people/ommanipadmehum/writing/1254405-stop) was written a few months ago, in light of a recent event in the NSW suburb of Camden. There was a proposal for a new Islamic school in the area. 900 gathered at a town meeting to block it. “We don’t want them not only here, but we don’t want them in Australia” “Don’t let them take Camden!” “They have terrorists among them!” “No one wants them here, they’re filthy grubs” “I don’t want my kids being taught that kind of propaganda” they said. Two bloody, severed pigs heads on stakes were placed at the proposed site, an Australia flag fluttering gloriously in between them. Today, I learn they are supporting a Catholic school in the area on a different side of town with “less traffic issues”. %*$#@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! / Here is where words fail me. Friends, the world is a beautiful place. Australia is a beautiful place. Camden, I’m sure, is a beautiful place with lots of beautiful people in it. But the hatred and the fear and the ignorance is overwhelming – a poison, one for which the remedy, though in abundance, is unwanted by sufferers. That remedy is Love. Dear ones, share the world your Love. Never think it will not make a difference – a smile, a word of comfort, a kind act. Words inspire. Art inspires. Inspire the world with your Words and your Art and your Love. / And d r o p by d r o p the jug of equality and love for all shall begin to fill :)

Hi all - Nothing photog related but i thought i would touch base for this week…. So i have to head back to my old High School to give a presentation on Friday and i am a little bit nervous! I dont think it is getting up in front of everyone – i did that all through Uni – i think I am concerned that one of the kids might put me on the spot with a question that i cant answer! Is that it?? I am not sure…. / So i am chatting about The Art of Creative Writing and giving them my thoughts on what makes a good story… well ihavent written since i found photography!!! So maybe i am a fake… Anyways if anyone has any thoughts of things that they think makes for a good story i am up to my 20th point on my PowerPoint presentation…. Anyways….i am really enjoying the photog course i am doing. I am learning all the basics that i thought i already knew – but i dont. This weeks assignment is “Black and White” – but i cannot use the monochrome setting on the camera and i cant use P/shop! So i have to go out and find some black and white things…... actually more challenging than you think….... So thats me for this week! Oh and i am going to a fundraiser night tongiht for my little brothers soccer team…i have to sit through the Indiana Jones movie.. wish me luck…. Court x0

On June 11,2008 The Government Of Canada in The House Of Commons, apologised to Aboriginal Canadians for the abuse they endured as a result of being forced to attend Residential Schools throughout Canada against their will. The schools were run by various churches at the time. Today I discovered a 2 hour award winning documentary about one man’s tearful journey to not only discover the truth and facts about this atrocity, but to share it with the world at great peril to his personal and professional well being. About a year ago I met a 71 year old survivor of a resdential school, and he shared some of his story of the experience and it was horrifying to say the least. WARNING this documentary is heartbreaking, and will make you cry,. If you watch the documentary and feel inclined, please pass the link on to others, and perhaps something good will come by the truth being spoken. / Unrepentant: Kevin Annett and Canada’s Genocide

When I was a kid in school, I hated art. Don’t get me wrong, I loved making art for myself, but when it came to assignments for class I hated it. I couldn’t wait until it was an option that I didn’t have to take. / The reason for this was simply that when I created my work, it was never good enough. / Yes, I realized even then there are techniques and that can be learned, but the lack of encouragement from the Art Teacher ( to be kind, mostly it was abuse) turned me off even trying for years. / It wasn’t until I was an adult that I was brave enough to try again. Even though there were extremely talented people in my adult class, I was not made to feel like a second class citizen and despite being great with colour I really had a lot to learn about drawing and design. With positive criticism and encouragement I found I really enjoyed creating art in many mediums and was able to improve my technique too. / I hope that these days, primary teachers encourage even their least talented students to enjoy the act of creating art; one can always learn to perfect technique.

I’m trying to get away from it (or am I?) but it seems to not want to leave: to me it’s creating a fantasy; to my teacher it’s fashion. / Really, what I want is to get into documentary photography; creating a story behind the image. / I don’t want to admit my photography is shallow. But then my photography has always been about capturing beauty, something which, visually, is only skin deep… Isn’t it? / Damnations, give me some names!!

This is so cool. I’ve only just joined a week ago and I’ve already got two watchers!! / I haven’t even uploaded anything!!! / Maybe I should. I have some old art work on my school profile, which I don’t like, but it could lead to some more watchers. and keep people happy. / And I’ve got a few stories that I have written for English. / Hopefully you will see some of them in a minute. / I read somewhere that it is better to upload just one or two artworks a day. Don’t ask me why, but I think I’ll do that. (I’ll look like I’ve been working really hard.) I’m going to fail school, me being sick has caused me to not be able to eat anything without feeling sick, and thus leading to me not being able to concentrate on anything. Hopefully the appointment next week clears up a few things. But until then I hope I can focus on my work. / Geography: My individual Report thing (mega hard) / English: Oral Presentation 2 + written report + Journal + Poem thing (which we just started. And I’ve only got a week left. So much for my future. Oh and I recommend you go see the movie 1408. I’ts totally cool. (made from a stephen king novel) Toodles Edit: So much for only uploading one thing. Lol

Lately I realize how much I lack techniques as far as art. I have images in my mind, and if it came out exactly the way I wanted it to come out, it’d be great art pieces. BUT I lack the techniques to make them a reality. SO I need to get movin take tons of classes at the community college then move on to art school and graduate. I’m excited to think about myself obtaining new techniques in classes.
