Karin’s storefront iAN’s storefront This has been an amazing experience to be a part of….an enormous thank you to Matt Mawson who has tirelessly and generously worked over the past 2 days to bring this little book into being….. I could never have done it without you Matt! And of course a huge thank you to the amazing writer and friend of mine, one of those great Aussie characters that just keeps on keeping on, keeps on getting better with age…. that is iAN Derrick I first met iAN through a journal Matt wrote about one of iAN’s books, and since that day, we sorta hit it off….. I talked to iAN about my father and he also was inspired to write another short story called Understanding Harry and correct me if i’m wrong, but i think he may have been inspired to write a story that reflected some of the goings on with Matt’s four legged friend also. One day I got an email from the amazing iAN, saying although he thought my father should be the one to tell and publish his own stories, he’d had a little idea and brought it to life in Understanding Harry and not long after this i received a second email saying that he’d done it again, but i would have to wait til the morning when he loaded the story to red bubble, and he and I and hubby all savoured the moment….....waiting with baited breath, until upon waking in the morning two days ago, I was thrilled to discover this wonderful story had been written. A story about my characters…involved a certain Mrs T….but i will tell you no more, as it’s a must read…and you can read it over here She Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore Thank you iAN and Thank you Matt i am eternally grateful

  • Shirtheads - featuring Chris Wahl
    by caanan

Eerily enough, I think this is the look most people get when I send them their Shirthead questions. / !http://images-2.redbubble.com/img/u…

Eerily enough, I think this is the look most people get when I send them their Shirthead questions. / Chris Wahl is another one of those unstoppable bubblers who had a lot of funky tshirts to choose from / / but it was Paper Rock Scissors / / that ended up inspiring in me yet another simple, (and kinda nasty) gag. Think of it as a no-budget Curiosity Show. :oP Enjoy! What do you think are the decisions people use this game most for? What should be solved using Rock Paper Scissors? Usually, I think it’s used to decide who gets the short end of the straw. Like who’s gonna do the dishes, or who’s gonna climb the fence to retrieve the ball from Old Man Cooper’s haunted mansion, things like that. / Soccer matches should definitely use them on 0-0 draws. Definitely makes more sense than those stupid penalty shootouts. Maybe in the boxing ring as well, although the gloves might pose a problem. What inspires you, day by day? Creatively, the internet is a bottomless source of inspiration. The amount and array of fantastic art and artists inspires me to no end. Actually using the ‘stumble’ button on my Firefox browser is also a great source of inspiration. You never know what little gems you’re going to find. What do you enjoy drawing the most. Why? Besides women and monsters and the usual nerdish fare, I enjoy drawing the human face- eyes and mouths especially. You can convey so much emotion and character when those two features are drawn well. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy drawing caricatures as well. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? Back when I used to work at Disney Australia, I used to think I was some big rebel walking around the Disney corridors in a ‘Mickey Rat’ t-shirt. Most likely they just thought I was some big smartarse (and they were right). / Some honourable mentions though would go to my DC Vertigo Chris Bachalo Death shirt, My Cure Disintegration shirt and when I was younger, my Ghostbusters shirt. All faves. Who should come back from the dead as a zombie, and what would happen? Maybe the late actor, Jack Palance? His bone structure and villainous ham acting would be perfectly suited to the task. He’d be the best one-handed pushup zombie around. What did you want to be when you were 6? Unsurprisingly, I wanted to be a comicbook artist, since collecting comic books were a big part of my life growing up. I eventually realised I didn’t have the patience to do so and just stuck to illustration instead. I think I also wanted to be a puppeteer at one stage as well. What’s the funniest thing ever? A toss up between my 4 year old dancing, Bert and Ernie and cartoon gags on the internet involving airline safety art. If you were asked to create a new law for Australia, what would it be, and how would it be enforced? A no mullet law, especially on young children. Ever seen a 3 year old with a full-on chullet half way down their back? Very tragic. It’s a form of child abuse I tells ya! Under the new laws, asking for some ‘business in the front, party in the back’, ‘hockey hair’, a ‘chicago neckwarmer’ or a ‘MacGyver style’ cut at the local hairdressers will be a punishable offense. As much as I love David Bowie’s music, he’s to blame for this scourge of bad hair. Damn you Ziggy Stardust! How did you find the bubble? What makes you stick around? Fellow Aussie comic artist and previous Shirthead, Simon Sherry brought RedBubble to my attention via the Pulp Faction forums. Ever since then my paid work output has dropped considerably. Thanks again, mate! / I had a little break from the Bubble recently as I sometimes go through shifts in creative direction (meaning I have a short attention span) but dammit, t-shirt design is the coolest fun. I just couldn’t stay away! What will happen in the next five years? Most likely I’ll be frantically trying to justify my existence, both personally and creatively, since at the end of those five years I’ll be turning 40! Eep. Thanks Chris! Now get that worried look off your face… ;oP And I hate to be a broken record folks, but this is the last time I’ll mention it, I swear… Seeing as how it’s the final week and all… but Celadore is still struggling to keep the top spot over at Zudacomics.com so if you haven’t voted, there’s one week left to get me sailing over the finish line and finally be a legitimately paid comic artist. :oD Joy! • 'Dog Rocks' wins at the Henry Lawson Festival of Arts photography competition

The upcoming 51st Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts will be held Thursday 5th June to Monday 9th June, 2008. Some good news on a personal level is that my image Dog Rocks has been judged the Best Photograph Of The Exhibition in the photography competition. The award to be presented is a bronze statuette which has been sculptured by Michael Mandelc, and it depicts Henry Lawson’s “The Drover’s Wife”. Dog Rocks also won the Open Colour section of the competition. I’ve been kindly invited by Tim Wood, coordinator of the photography competition, to attend the Awards Dinner at Grenfell on Saturday 7 June, 2008 6:30PM to receive the award. There is a distinct connection with Redbubble regarding this achievement. Hop Dac, RB staff member, posted a topic in the main forum informing members of this competition. It was there I became aware of the competition, and I thank Hop for doing so. Upon deciding to enter, I ordered six Redbubble matted prints specifically for the competition. I wrote a journal regarding the quality of the matted prints on April 19, 2008 and it can be found here. I’m pleased to say that Redbubble and its community have played a significant role regarding this achievement and I highly value the continued encouragement given by Peter Styles, Redbubble staff and Redbubble members. The achievement is dedicated to my mate Joe Mortelliti, for it was because of him that Dog Rocks was photographed on August 25, 2007. Special thanks to my family for their continued support. Folks, enjoy your creative pursuits here at Redbubble and beyond. Cheers, / Darren. Well I’ve done it. I’ve taken all my photographs off from my portfolio that are not bark or rocks. I’ve left all the associated groups as well. I’m taking the plunge and just going to focus on my rockscapes and barkscapes. They are my passion and what I love to photograph the most. Its what I think about all the time. My next adventure and treasure hunt to find a nice big rock face to explore and see what Mother Nature has left for me to discover. When I see a grove of Paperbark Trees, I can’t wait to stop the car and find what they have to offer. So many hidden landscapes and abstact designs just waiting for me! / UPDATE: Jan 08 – OK, so that didn’t last LOL! Just have to put back some of my macro flowers, I really do love them too! :O)

Our society has the technology to merge the waves of air and water into the synergistic hybrid of Wind/Wave Turbine Farms. To use the two natural renewable and constant forces of nature would help keep the costs of energy low as well as constant without adding to the ever increasing greenhouse effects that is leading to global warming. The merging of these two forces do not run out if you think “what happens when there is no wind?” Anyone that has been to ocean beaches can attest come rain or shine; clear or cloudy skies they are constant the ocean waves don’t stop nor does the wind cease. How much power can be generated by Wind/Wave Farms built instead of drilling for a finite and diminishing source of energy? President Bush who is a traditional “oil” man and his proxy from Arizona want to drill for fossil fuels which the experts have stated won’t begin to produce any crude for 5-10 years and there is no guarantee that many of those leased areas will have any oil at all. Though President Bush has signed an order countermanding his father’s executive order still needs Congress to actually make it a reality. It is time for the lawmakers to make it an incentive for a set percentage of those lands be made into Wind/Wave Farms. The source of the energy is not finite nor is it diminishing plus the farms can come online in less than 5 years. Where drilling is expensive and even with the current technologies is still not a guarantee of finding fossil fuels, the waves and the wind are constant 24 hours a day year round. When you go to the voting booth in November keep in mind sustainable energy solutions are not grounded in fossil fuels. Those that advocate that drilling for oil is the answer to our energy woes probably have had their campaign coffers lined with the money of “Big Oil”. Here is something to think about when you go to the polls: / / “In a 1998 interview, Osama bin Laden – the terrorist organizer of 9/11 who still roams free – listed as one of his many grievances against the U.S. that Americans “have stolen $36 trillion from Muslims” by purchasing oil from Persian Gulf countries at low prices. The real price of a barrel of oil should be $144, bin Laden demanded.” / http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/05/bin-laden-144-oil/ The quote below is from the testimony of Anne Korin on May 22, 2008 to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs “Mr. Chairman, Members of the Committee, about ten years ago, Osama bin Laden stated that his target price for oil is $144 a barrel and that the American people, who allegedly robbed the Muslim people of their oil, owe each Muslim man, woman, and child $30,000 in back payments. At the time, $144 a barrel seemed farfetched to most. Today, bin Laden is a mere $20 a barrel short of his target and there is little doubt it will be attained. I would like to impress upon this Committee that $144 a barrel oil will be perceived as a victory for the Jihadist movement and a reaffirmation that the economic warfare component of its campaign against the West is a resounding success. There is no need to elaborate on the implications of such a victory in terms of loss of U.S. prestige and our ability to prevail in the Long War of the 21st century. It is therefore imperative that the U.S. Congress do its utmost to forestall such a setback.” Do you want the same people running the government that has fumbled the ball since 2001, be they Democrat or Republican? If our elected representatives continue to support a policy tethering us to the failed policies of “Big Oil” are they really representing America’s best interests when they continue to support the status quo. This beautiful mele is one of my favourites and I love the gentle power of his angelic voice!! It is the beautiful Maunaleo Mele Keali’i composed for his beloved Mother, Lei, and the one I included on my signature image I created with deepest respect and appreciation for Keali’i Reichel ~ Darkly, deeply, beautifully blue! / Aloha! Thanks for the warm welcome! I am so very excited to be here. This is a safe place to express myself. In the city where I live it seems that no one understands me the artist. But now I finally have home to come to. Not only to show what I’m made of, but to find inspiration in this world. There’s so much beauty here. I’m thankful to be a part of this community. I look forward to the future. So far everyone is just amazing. / My work has been called “dark”, “scary” and lots of other unintelligent words. If you are interested in rock art formations you may wish to check out my blog. I have a different twist on rock art. I have added a perspective of rock art formations that I believe have been manipulated or modified or even created by man and taking pictures of them. Usually rock art implies petroglyphs or pictographs. These rock art formations may resemble a man’s face specifically or in general. It could be a side profile or a front view. Or they may resemble an animal. Or a bird. I find this study very fascinating. For a further discussion or more information on what I am trying to say, here is my blog address: http://www.wasatchphotos.blogspot.com/ Thank you.

To celebrate Australia Day my friend Steve and I travelled to our favourite wilderness. Arriving early we listened to the dawn chorus and identified all the birds we could by sound. We then walked along what passes for the road and observed the animal tracks and scats to learn more of what passed in the night. We found some Quoll and Koala scats. On full light we headed off for the creek to check for tracks in the sand. We came across the tracks of the Water Rat and the Brush-tail Possum side by side, had they stopped for a chat? After several hours of exploring unmapped tributaries we became hopelessly lost. This is fairly typical of what happens every time we come here. The old joke “we could die here’ always gets a laugh. We found some species of plants not previously identified in the area and are content that we have done our bit for science. We snacked on some bush food and suppressed our appetites with smokes. We observe what we called ‘explodey tree’, a forest giant so impacted by lightning that it literally exploded. Trees are sheared of in all directions, timber shards are imbedded in the ground over 50metres away. The trunk of the tree has exploded and the unsupported branches have fallen in a heap where the trunk used to be. The thought of so much force is a little confounding. Time to have some fun and look for caves. Crawling among the sandstone I am once again struck by the extraordinary lithology of the area, at least two types of sandstone and rare basalt intrusions. I know this was also of great interest to the original inhabitants because sandstone, conglomerate, basalt and water are great ingredients for making stone tools. Many people once lived here, the evidence is all around. As the day was drawing to a close and we needed to find our way out we came across a very large cave. There were bones to photograph so I made my way to the back of the cave. It was then that I saw the artwork. Shaking, I almost reached out and touched it, but then the training kicked in. Observe and record but do not touch. I have never seen a more beautiful man made sight in all my life. It is a gallery, it is enormous, it is ancient, over 15 metres of cupules in at least seven distinct rows, more than 500 individual carvings. A storm was brewing and it was time to go. Our research later confirmed that it is indeed ancient and previously unrecorded. An art style that is consistent with a Pleistocene dating, probably more than 10 thousand years old. As we were leaving Steve had to almost drag me into the car, I was mesmerised by the storm. I saw a bolt of pulse lightning strike the forest and am reminded of explodey tree. Time to go, now. How better to celebrate Australia Day? Perhaps one day I will die out there…
