I took a picture. I was up in North Wales visiting the in-laws, which is always a good opportunity to go out and take a few shots. I love walking out in Snowdonia, and they live right at its northernmost edge. So up the hills I went and then down into the next valley – walking in Wales is like that. Llanfairfechan was where I ended up. In a shady little spot with a lovely rock-strewn river running under a wooden bridge. This was a perfect opportunity to try out some long-exposure water shots. You know, the kind that make the water go all silky. But… ah… no tripod. Find a rock. Something conveniently sited, at a good, low angle and… click. So I took a few and moved on. Once we got back to the Island, where I live, I downloaded the pics fairly confident that I would get something useable. But no. The Electronic Viewfinder had let me down again (they have a tendency to do that) and as usual had made things look more crisp than they really were. But there was one shot. One that just might be useable. Fiddled with contrast, fiddled with saturation, cropped, generally mucked about with. No dice. There was only one way to rescue this. Go mad… So I upped the saturation waaay up. I put in some vignetting, changed the colour balance and put on a film grain filter, messed about with the contrast and came up with THIS Suddenly, a photograph that was lost, seems to have become acceptable. But is that amount of post-processing right? Is any post-processing right? Is the software taking over the skills of composition and care. In short are computers making photographers lazy? Why bother composing when you can take a shot and crop it? Why bother with correct exposures when you can dicker about with it later? I wish I had the answers. But I don’t. Art is so damn subjective…

Over the next few months I intend to take those willing to read, on a literary adventure through the bubble. As an investigative journalist and member of the bubble I will aim to place some meaning behind some of the more interesting and popular images on the bubble, I will endeavour to give the reader insight into such important questions as… • Is there a relationship going on between Paul Vanzella and Jo O’Brien / • Does Mel Brackstone wear waders all the time and does her tripod have crustaceans and seaweed on it / • Who would win the fight if Stuart Chapman and Mel Brackstone met on a beach? / • Flibble how does he do that? / • Deborah Parkin has she painted her house and family black and white on purpose I am sure that there will be more questions that I will investigate over time and if there are specific issues that you feel need answers then get in touch and I’ll see what I can do. please note that all comments are completely fictitious and intended to be humorous. The journal relates to my interpretation of the art and to stories that I make up about the artist as a bubble characters rather than focusing on the real people behind the art This has been inspired by a comment from Paul Vanzella relating to the comments that I have posted on several of his recent works – all of which I find truly astounding Andrew

  • Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art
    by Trace Lowe

Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art / A four step process This is what I give my students as a guide to art appreciation: / ...

Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art / A four step process This is what I give my students as a guide to art appreciation: 1. Description- What do I see? Study the work in detail carefully. Describe the work in full detail. Be factual. Mention everything you see. 2. Analysis- How is the work organized? Look for and talk about the elements and principles of art and design that seems to dominate the work. Look at how the artist has used The Elements of Art / • Lines- real and implied, curved and straight, direction of movement / • Shapes, Space, Forms- Are the shapes geometric or free-form? Where is the horizon? Where is your point of view as the viewer? (Above, below, in the work, or outside) / • Colors- Warm, cool, bright, dull, soft, bold, etc. / • Value- light: reflecting much light; dark: absorbing much light. / • Texture-Both the medium and the objects portrayed: rough, smooth, shinny, dull Look at The Principles of Design / • Rhythm- Are there repeats of elements or images? / • Movement- Is there an illusion of action? How does the eye move around the work? / • Balance- Formal or Symmetrical, informal or asymmetrical / • Proportion- The size relationships between one part to the whole or one part to another part / • Variety- Visual difference and contrast within the work / • Emphasis- What part is dominant, and what part is subordinate? / • Unity- Does the work hold together? 3. Interpretation- What is happening? This is more than storytelling. As in literature, you need to interpret and generalize from data given. You need to find the metaphor or allegory in the work. What is the artist trying to communicate? Use your intelligence, imagination and courage to explain and tell the meaning of the work. This is based on the facts you have observed and your own life experiences. You can express your feelings, but they must be backed up by the observations you have made about the work. 4. Judgment- What do I think of the work? Does the work hold together visually? Does it communicate with the viewer? Judge whether the work succeeds or fails. You give your opinion backed by the three steps above. To make a judgment, you need to be honest with yourself. You need to know why you feel the way you do. Three Theories of Judging Art Imitationalism -Some people believe that art should imitate what we see in the real world. / Formalism – Some people believe that the most important part of a work is in the use of the principles of design and the elements of art. A work is successful if the texture, color, lines, etc are organized properly. / Emotionalism – Some people believe that the most important part of the work is the mood the artist communicates. Perhaps it is best to use all three theories when judging a work of art. Adapted from many sources, including Arttalk by Rosalind Ragans

  • Tagging your art work
    by martinspixs

Putting tags on your work is the most important thing to consider when up loading work to redbubble, so you should think about setting up…

Putting tags on your work is the most important thing to consider when up loading work to redbubble, so you should think about setting up a system for working this through. Of late I have seen a lot of people complaining about tag spamming on RB, it is a way of life on the internet but if I put in that I am looking for “Irish wolfhound” and then you show me a photo of an oil rig you can be sure it will be the last time I look at your work! Then I got to thinking maybe some of the people that are “tag spamming” for the wrong reasons, maybe they have been ill informed about how to use tags thinking that more is better. Then there are people on RB that English is a second language for them, for those of you that do not speak a second language English is back to front too nearly every other language in the world. If this site was in Russian or French I would not be here even though I lived and worked in both countries for many years. What is a tag? It is a label or description yes but it is more than that it is the way that buyers find what they would like to buy! If you were to look at any good internet marketing forum you would see a lot of postings about “niche marketing” if they are selling “Irish wolfhound hair loss powder” then that is the tag they use not dog, elephant or oil rig! They do not want a billion hits a day from people that want to know about elephants, they would rather have 100 hits a month from people that would like to buy hair loss treatment for Irish wolfhounds! Many internet marketers make 6 figure incomes, some make 7 figure incomes, and how do they do this? Not by spamming but by making their product so hard to find that unless you really want to buy it you will not find it, strange but true. To the REAL spammers, you are scum and we will get you! To the accidental unintentional spammers, learn and grow. And to the ones that are worried about spammers, find them and report them but remember they could be unintentional spammers. Some of the things that I and you should do before adding tags to your work, also remember that the better the are tags are the higher ranking we get. • Work out what tags you are going to be before you start to up load your work. / • If you are finding it hard to come up with tags try using a thesaurus (Ctrl+F7 in word). / • Do not do it in one sitting, give it a day or so and have another look at the tags. / • If you are not sure about a word then do a search on RB and see what you get. / • Remember that many words have more than one meaning, so try and find a better word. / • Some words have different spellings around the world “color & colour” use both. / • Still looking for more tags, why not put down the Latin name for that flower? Veni vidi vici, hay not just Latin why not German, French and Italian as well. I hope that this has been of use to some people. / Martin

I want to take a second out of design time and uploading t-shirts to explain to YOU in the most simplest of ways how AMAZING Redbubble is. This post will hopefully inspire you to become involved in many ways within this amazing website. I’m going to try something a bit different and write the rest of this post about my day on redbubble, with a SLANG theme…just to show you that these are my thoughts and words and I mean them very much and also because it’s a lot of fun! - Redbubble = Sik. Like totally. I mean like you hop on the net, pop open the homepage and check out some awesome art and stuff. There’s pics of people wearing some shirts and holding some art, new IN-YOUR-FACE designs, GROUPS overloading with creativity and a cool COMMUNITY. That’s what keeps me here; the COMMUNITY I mean. Like, I upload a fresh design, slam on some links in the description and send it off to a few GROUPS. Then, after it’s all uploaded, I wander over to some fresh stuff, show my respects by dropping some comments and favouriting the work and if it’s totally mind blowing I may even add the artist to my WATCHLIST (coz you never know what cool designs will come next!). I pop back to MYBUBBLE every now and then to check out the progress of my latest design and WHAMMO! Usually I have at least one comment that I can enjoy and REPLY to; It’s all about the REPLY people! Most of the times the comments are awesome, even if they are only a sentence long, and they inspire me to keep smashing it up! If for some reason I don’t have a comment on my new piece (probably coz its only been 1 minute) I go and check out more cool new works on the BUB. When I find some more slamming pieces I send off a few BUBBLEMAILS directly to the artists letting them know how SIK I think their work is! Then I might read one of the latest BACKSTAGE posts from the main REDBUBBLE PEEPS behind the scenes and get totally inspired again to create some new stuff! So if creating art for a website inspires you to create more art – How could you not love it! With love, Diesel Laws Follow me on Redbubble and also: / WHY DO YOU LOVE REDBUBBLE? Go on, drop a comment >

I’m thinking of setting up a group to showcase artworks created on post-its. I’ve never set up a group before. Been searching to add my post-it doodles to a group and realise that we haven’t actually got a group for artworks created on post-its, etc. So if you think you’re interested, let me know! Oh and I’m open to other suggestions too. Just noticed when I was searching for post-its, only a little over 3 pages result….? We need more people doodling! Draw people draw! Maybe could be a group on artworks done on notepads, napkins, random piece of paper, something along that line… what do you think? DO you think this idea is worth doing?

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his new wife were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
