Which is about the communal abstract chatter that one encounters when in amongst a crowd of like-minded personalities. / I have chosen not to emphasize the precise detail of each bird but rather their general shape as they caper around, to give the impression of constant movement. ‘Iliki’ Spirit of Aloha is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper using ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. My darling ‘Illiki’ was inspired by James Michener’s novel ‘Hawaii’ and the beautiful young hawaiian girl who is one of the charming characters early on in the story. I was completely swept away during the reading of this incredible novel, highly recommended reading :D I think that the song Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole really relates to the story …. as his melancholy voice is so melodically accompanied by the ukelele….. it reminds me of the story of Iliki the young hawaiian girl, who leaves her island when still very young…. forever she haunted the mind of the young minister missionary who tended her and taught her in his first days on the island, he forever wondered how she was faring in the civilised world, having been taken away on a ship by the white men. He felt a certain special kind of fatherly love for this girl, and it tore his heart that she was so clever and cottoned on so well to the new english language, and customs he would teach her, as well as the scriptures…but she was a wild thing, and never one to be ‘pigeon-holed’ or contained… he set her free and never saw her again. Here are the lyrics to Israel’s version of the song, i feel that is how the young missionary felt, even as he grew old on the island of Hawaiia, waiting hoping wondering with every ship that pulled in, whether the young girl Iliki would be aboard and he would welcome her return, sadly that day never came tho: SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW Ooooo oooooo ohoohohoo / Ooooo ohooohoo oooohoo / Ooooo ohoohooo oohoooo / Oohooo oohoooho ooooho / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo Somewhere over the rainbow / Way up high / And the dreams that you dreamed of / Once in a lullaby ii ii iii / Somewhere over the rainbow / Blue birds fly / And the dreams that you dreamed of / Dreams really do come true ooh ooooh / Someday I’ll wish upon a star / Wake up where the clouds are far behind me ee ee eeh / Where trouble melts like lemon drops / High above the chimney tops thats where you’ll find me oh / Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly / And the dream that you dare to,why, oh why can’t I? i iiii Well I see trees of green and / Red roses too, / I’ll watch them bloom for me and you / And I think to myself / What a wonderful world Well I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white / And the brightness of day / I like the dark and I think to myself / What a wonderful world The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky / Are also on the faces of people passing by / I see friends shaking hands / Saying, “How do you do?” / They’re really saying, I…I love you / I hear babies cry and I watch them grow, / They’ll learn much more / Than we’ll know / And I think to myself / What a wonderful world (w)oohoorld Someday I’ll wish upon a star, / Wake up where the clouds are far behind me / Where trouble melts like lemon drops / High above the chimney top that’s where you’ll find me / Oh, Somewhere over the rainbow way up high / And the dream that you dare to, why, oh why can’t I? I hiii ? Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo

Sales of this Design? – 1 sale so far :) / Midnight Blues is from a painting i did recently on Arches Aquarelle Paper 56×76cm, a mixed media production, utilising inks, pastels, acrylics, charcoals, found objects such as string and fabric….and the most beautiful gold paint which gives the guitar it’s lustre BOATS & BIRDS by Gregory and the Hawk If you be my star / I’ll be your sky / you can hide underneath me and come out at night / when I turn jet black and you show off your light / I live to let you shine / I live to let you shine but you can skyrocket away from me / and never come back if you find another galaxy / far from here with more room to fly / just leave me your stardust to remember you by if you be my boat / I’ll be your sea / a depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity / ebbing and flowing and pushed by a breeze / I live to make you free / I live to make you free but you can set sail to the west if you want to / and past the horizon till I can’t even see you / far from here where the beaches are wide / just leave me your wake to remember you by if you be my star / I’ll be your sky / you can hide underneath me and come out at night / when I turn jet black and you show off your light / I live to let you shine / I live to let you shine but you can skyrocket away from me / and never come back if you find another galaxy / far from here with more room to fly / just leave me your stardust to remember you by / stardust to remember you by Midnight Blues is from the Inspired Series by Karin Taylor, during the painting of this, i was strongly influenced by one of my favourite songs “Boats and Birds” by Gregory and the Hawke, as well as my favourite Australian artist, Brett Whitely, longing to capture something of the wonderful curves he created in his works. It has a dark and sombre feeling, much like how i was feeling at the time i created her. I used to laugh and carry on that my thoughts and my moods could ever be conveyed through a painting, and it was just silly that people reckoned they did so, but just look at me now….i cannot seem to prevent it happening these days!! lol…that’ll teach me to scoff :)

/ / / Christmas Rainbows Nativity is a mixed media production on brown paper / I used white acrylic gesso under, with a mix of chalk pastel, black marker and charcoal to create this little piece especially for Christmas 2008 You may notice that each character has a Heart… / Jesus’ heart is white – symbolic of his purity / Mary has a pink heart – symbolic of a mother’s gentleness and softness / Joseph’s heart is red – symbolic of father’s strength and reliability The idea of sending Rainbow Wishes for Christmas 2008 seemed appropriate in light of our global situation, the Rainbow stands for Hope or Promises made that they will be fulfilled…. I think we are all hoping for the fulfillment of the promises made to us by our governments, our leaders, our friends and family for PEACE and GOODWILL towards all men, regardless of race or creed….and not least of all God himself who spoke about rainbows being a sign of promise and hope, and also Jesus who’s birth it is we celebrate, mainly because of the hope his birth put in our hearts for true freedom from our chains (but if you are not a believer, the artwork still speaks of the promise of hope…..if not a believer in hope…then this one isn’t for you …but perhaps it will speak to someone’s heart and help spread a little hope for the future around )
