  • How I created Guardians

Ok – First I want to pay credit to both Susan Davies , who provided the base image of Castell Coch and to Rose Moxon , who kindly created the 3D dragons that I used in this composition. Thank you both – I could’nt have created this without you guys. / / I used Photoshop CS2 to create this image / / I started with Susan’s image below / / / / I used a duplicate layer [made the background invisible with the eye icon in the layer palette], and used a medium hardness eraser to erase all of the backgroung behind the castle to produce the image below. / / / / Then, I had to remove all those trees from the image, that were covereing the castle. For this I used various sized, soft clone brushes and fine paintbrushes to paint back in detail that was lost due to the cloning process – Very time consuming, but also very rewarding at the end of it. The image then looked like the one below. / / / / I then wanted to place the castle onto a rock tower, so I used a shot that I took at a local beach in the summer of 2007. This rock is only about 12 ft high. / / / / I pasted this rock image onto my composition as a new layer behind the castle, then again used the eraser to remove the parts that I didnt want, until I reached the result below. / / / / I then merged these two layers and used the edit transform perspective tool to change to perspective of the image – I wanted the image to look as if I were looking up at the caste slightly and I wanted the rocks to appear large and towering. The result is below. / / / / Now for the sky – I used an image that I took of a sunset in Cameroon in November 2006 / / / / I placed this sky image behind the castle – rock layer to produce the image below. / / / / Next I worked on the sky and castle layer in turn and adjusted the colour, using edit adjustments colour balance, until I created a nice tone for each layer, which both balanced with each other. I also adjusted the exposure slightly on the sky layer to give it a bit more kick. The image now looked like the one below. / / / / I wasn’t happy with the shadows and highlights on the castle in relation to the sky, so next I worked on both layers in turn and used dodge to add highlights and burn to add dark shadows and gloomy clouds. / / / I then adjusted the levels to make the castle layer a bit darker so it blended in with the sky – the result then became my base image which you can see below. / / / / I now wanted to add atmosphere to the image, so I created a new fill layer and used a very soft brush to paint in a light green fill at about 30% opacity, covering the whole layer in one go. I added a litttle noise and changed the blend of this layer to Colour Burn. The result was a deep rich feel that you can see below. / / / / I then flattened the image and just went over it to add any final highlights and shadows with the dodge and burn tools. / / I then used two dragon images that Rose kindly created for me – you can see them below. / / / / / / I placed these images onto the composition, using edit, free transform to resize them and then added a new layer to create some foggy mist around them. For this I used a lasoo tool, with feathering set to 30 to select the area that I wanted to have mist and filled it with white at about 30% opacity. I then added noise and added a box blur. I then added a glowing edge with a high spread to this layer by adding a layer style. The last step was to erase any mist that had covered the dragons with a fine eraser and using the dodge tool once more to bring out highlights on the creatures, before flattening and saving the image as Guardians / / To see the finished piece, click Here /

  • What do My Wife , Alice Cooper and a Porn Star all have in common?

I had mentioned in an earlier post that my wife bought me tickets to see Alice Cooper in concert locally. She has also mentioned she had gotten backstage passes to meet Alice. When we got there we couldn’t find her contact and it looked like no one knew about use meeting Alice Cooper. She tried phoning the guy and he said the manager was being a pain and we might not be able to get passes. My wife talked to the manager and he told us that Alice’s manager wasn’t allowing any more passes to be handed out. He then told us to stand by the meeting room door and he would see what he could do. After the concert he told us sorry there is nothing he could do. So I handed him my artwork and asked him to deliver to Alice for me. He then produces one VIP pass and says only one of us could go in between my wife and I. My wife tells me to go. Two minutes later she enters the room and tells me the manager gave her a pass aswell. Sitting in from of us , waiting to get his VIP pass is non other then this guy Ron Jeremy the porn star.Sorry for the shaky shot that was my fault! My wife , who has more personality then any ten people you know, then gets her picture taken with this guy next Alice checks out my artwork I brought for him to sign, plus I brought an extra copy as a present for him Here is a link to the image I renamed it last night to Alice Cooper – Steven’s NightMare Click Here Alice was a very nice guy and joked with Lisa and myself, talked about his two girls that are a part of his stage show. the concert was excellent!!!

On Saturday, April 12, 2008 my band, Under Pressure will be playing at a benefit dance for a local man who has contracted a rare lung disease, and will likely not be able to return to work. Earlier in the day there will a Chinese auction and a silent auction. Both Darlene and myself have donated a print each of the organizer’s choosing. Here are the two images that they chose to put up for auction. / / /

I came to the realization that there are a few groups i desire to see created here at Red Bubble. I also came to the realization that i would not be a good moderator, as i would not be able to give each group the time and attention necessary to keep them thriving and well-maintained. I admire all the group moderators here at Red Bubble for all the hard work they do on our behalf to keep our creative communities thriving! As such, i thought i’d make an official request :). / The following are groups i would like to see created in the Red Bubble community: SURVIVORS SPEAK / A place for artwork/images/poetry/writing that has to do with surviving all kinds of things . . . / cancer, natural disasters, sexual abuse/incest, addiction, domestic violence, mental illness etc. This would be a place that encourages raw emotion, vulnerability, healing through art and expression. A place to share, connect and have a voice. THE SPOKEN WORD / This would be a place for people to share recitations of their writing, poetry and prose. Accompanied by a correlating written piece so that viewers can follow along with the recitation. A virtual poetry corner/open mic. The only stipulation would be that the recitation link provided be to a sound file ONLY and that it not link to another website or page – so that the focus stays on the spoken word. THE MONO ZONE / This would be a group for color images and artwork that are monochromatic (all red, all blue, all green and so on . . .). KISSING CORNER / You guessed it, artwork, pictures, writing, poetry . . . anything and everything to do with the sensual bliss of a kiss and kissing. LOVE and LOSS / A group dedicated to LOVE as . . . / intimacy, sacred, tantric, romance, seduction, lust, loss, betrayal, heartache, scorn and all of the other fabulously complicated dynamics that romantic relationships entail. I’d love to see the whole spectrum represented from sacred to sinful and everything inbetween! Group would welcome related artwork, imagery, poetry, prose and writing. Art/Imagery posted would portray HUMAN couples/interaction/intimacy/connection/loss/scorn of one kind or another. Gay, straight, bi, transgendered, together/broken up . . . doesn’t matter. ADOBE ADORATION / There are already a few fabulous groups here on Red Bubble that serve as a great way to learn Adobe and offer tutorials, tips and tricks. So that is NOT what this group would be about. This would be THE place to showcase images/artwork digitally altered in Adobe Photoshop. The primary emphasis would be on showing off your BEST work. Explanations of how images were created, technique tutorials would be optional and not required to be member of this group. In fact . . . it would be more about allowing surreal images to be enjoyed, to arouse the imagination, a sense of mystery and enchantment – as opposed to removing the mystery behind the image by explaining how it was created. Ideally it would be a place of visual transport. If any of you decide to start up a new group similar to any of the ones outlined above, than please reply to this post and let me know :). If i failed to realize that one or more of these groups are already in existence, again – feel free to reply to this post and let me know! Thank you in advance :) peace and light to everyone / JAEDA

An adjustment layer is a layer that only contains an adjustment such as levels or hue/saturation. They are more versatile than simply applying an adjustment to a layer in your image. For one thing they do no damage to pixels where applying an adjustment directly to a layer will permanently alter the image. Another is that the adjustment layer provides a layer mask so you can apply the adjustment to specific parts of the image by painting on the layer mask. Adjustment layers give you the ability to change the blend mode and opacity, and if you double click on the adjustment layer icon if will bring up the dialog box so you can make changes to the settings. I hope you found this information helpful. Feel free to add to this or ask questions. I will do my best to answer them.

A comment from a fellow bubbler ”...I do not understand the process of taking a drawing and running it through a computer …” This got me thinking… / ...so I thought I’d share my thinkings with you I’ve been drawing and painting for years, but (ever the perfectionist) I have a lot more unfinished works on paper, than I have ones I consider “done, but not overdone”. I got into photoshop a little while back, and it’s giving me the chance to finish some of these “not quite” images, and to do so in as many different variations as my imagination permits! They evolve (or get recycled, depending on how you look at it!), and I’ll often go back to a drawing from years back, that I ‘shopped a year or more ago, and suddenly it’s something else altogether. I’ve uploaded a bunch of “evolutions” of the fruit of my photoshop noodlings to my site if you’d like to see some more… www.pentangled.co.uk

I’ve been happily spending much time of late online with the vast portfolio of Abigaill Berenika over at AltPhotos.com. She has infused my love of photography with a new excitement. Her work seems quite personal, as she shoots the same model over and over-perhaps self portraits. I don’t know, she doesn’t write much about her process and I’m enjoying getting everything I need from just looking at the images. Her work reminds me a lot of of Robert Parkeharrison’s older portfolio, but with a much less dismal theme. Her tone does have a melancholic ring to it, but it’s more dreamy in a good weird way. Her use of Photoshop is thrilling. She manages to keep her images looking as if they were done with alternative processes-and maybe they are, but I doubt she actually shot a real building floating in a stormy sea…She’s a genius, a mysterious brilliant! The altphotos.com site is compelling. There are quite a few Polish photographers (Berenika is Polish) posting there and their work as a group is generally above and beyond. I wonder what’s going on in Poland that makes it possible for so many to be so poetically inclined and capable? http://www.altphotos.com/Gallery.aspx?&a=MemberGallery&memberid=2241
