I have wanted to own or run a gallery for some time now mainly to display and sell local artist’s work, but because of the economics of my home town, the fierce competition of the larger cities around me, and the fact that I am a poor photography student with a family and no money, It has never been practical. / The other day I was walking through Wal-Mart (American retail super-center run by under paid needy workers) and I noticed they had new lcd monitors set up at the end of the isles for POS (Point of Sale) demonstrations. These POS screens also had speakers which I had not seen before in a POS. / What I saw in my head was this; A gallery that caters to the artist and the customer by offering an experience I know I have never had at a gallery: You walk in to the gallery and it looks much like a normal gallery, 10 or so 19 inch digital picture frames, each with sound so that the artist can display their work with their interpretation in their voice, or their choice of music, poem, noise, etc. (some of these I know you would be dealing with copyrights). / Depending on technology you might also be able to place your order for what ever size print you like right there at the frame. Preferably printing would be done in house so that the artist could see that the prints are what they need to be, but that would only be if there was enough demand to pay for it. I think that artist control of finished product is a must if this idea is going to work. In a conventional gallery the artist brings the finished piece into the gallery, so there is nothing that can really go wrong. With my idea the artist is letting a third party print their work, and I would want it to be exactly how they want it. / Please let me know what you think of this idea. If you don’t like it, please tell me why or what you would change. If you do like it, please tell me why and what you would change. Thank you for your time and comments, Shaun

Ok – First I want to pay credit to both Susan Davies , who provided the base image of Castell Coch and to Rose Moxon , who kindly created the 3D dragons that I used in this composition. Thank you both – I could’nt have created this without you guys. / / I used Photoshop CS2 to create this image / / I started with Susan’s image below / / / / I used a duplicate layer [made the background invisible with the eye icon in the layer palette], and used a medium hardness eraser to erase all of the backgroung behind the castle to produce the image below. / / / / Then, I had to remove all those trees from the image, that were covereing the castle. For this I used various sized, soft clone brushes and fine paintbrushes to paint back in detail that was lost due to the cloning process – Very time consuming, but also very rewarding at the end of it. The image then looked like the one below. / / / / I then wanted to place the castle onto a rock tower, so I used a shot that I took at a local beach in the summer of 2007. This rock is only about 12 ft high. / / / / I pasted this rock image onto my composition as a new layer behind the castle, then again used the eraser to remove the parts that I didnt want, until I reached the result below. / / / / I then merged these two layers and used the edit transform perspective tool to change to perspective of the image – I wanted the image to look as if I were looking up at the caste slightly and I wanted the rocks to appear large and towering. The result is below. / / / / Now for the sky – I used an image that I took of a sunset in Cameroon in November 2006 / / / / I placed this sky image behind the castle – rock layer to produce the image below. / / / / Next I worked on the sky and castle layer in turn and adjusted the colour, using edit adjustments colour balance, until I created a nice tone for each layer, which both balanced with each other. I also adjusted the exposure slightly on the sky layer to give it a bit more kick. The image now looked like the one below. / / / / I wasn’t happy with the shadows and highlights on the castle in relation to the sky, so next I worked on both layers in turn and used dodge to add highlights and burn to add dark shadows and gloomy clouds. / / / I then adjusted the levels to make the castle layer a bit darker so it blended in with the sky – the result then became my base image which you can see below. / / / / I now wanted to add atmosphere to the image, so I created a new fill layer and used a very soft brush to paint in a light green fill at about 30% opacity, covering the whole layer in one go. I added a litttle noise and changed the blend of this layer to Colour Burn. The result was a deep rich feel that you can see below. / / / / I then flattened the image and just went over it to add any final highlights and shadows with the dodge and burn tools. / / I then used two dragon images that Rose kindly created for me – you can see them below. / / / / / / I placed these images onto the composition, using edit, free transform to resize them and then added a new layer to create some foggy mist around them. For this I used a lasoo tool, with feathering set to 30 to select the area that I wanted to have mist and filled it with white at about 30% opacity. I then added noise and added a box blur. I then added a glowing edge with a high spread to this layer by adding a layer style. The last step was to erase any mist that had covered the dragons with a fine eraser and using the dodge tool once more to bring out highlights on the creatures, before flattening and saving the image as Guardians / / To see the finished piece, click Here /

On Saturday, April 12, 2008 my band, Under Pressure will be playing at a benefit dance for a local man who has contracted a rare lung disease, and will likely not be able to return to work. Earlier in the day there will a Chinese auction and a silent auction. Both Darlene and myself have donated a print each of the organizer’s choosing. Here are the two images that they chose to put up for auction. / / /

There are several ways to do most things in Photoshop, and using the art history brush to create a painterly effect is no different. I’m going to show you ‘one’ way to do it. If you can find a really good video on the net to show you how to use the art history brush, it would be a great idea. A couple of things to remember when using the art history brush:- 1) The Brush Engine/Palette is your friend :) 2) Similar to the history brush, the art history brush needs a corresponding layer in the layers palette to the snapshot layer in the history palette. 3) It is better to slowly build up an effect than to try and slap it on all at once. 4) Remember to save your file in the .psd format often. Once you’ve initially saved it, you can just go to File>Save or Ctrl + S to update it. Before we start, lets have a look at what I mean by ‘the brush engine’ is your friend. If your brush engine/palette isn’t visible go to Window>Brushes or press F5 on the keyboard. Those familiar with the brush engine will know that it is the place to set up your chosen brush so that it does exactly what you want it to do. This can come in pretty handy when doing painterly effects. Lets have a look at setting the direction of a brush so that it will follow a chosen line and the tip will go in the correct direction. I have chosen a standard Photoshop brush for this – Autumn Leaves – I have gone through and unchecked all the default settings except smoothing, and set the spacing to 130%. In the first example I’ve drawn an S shape with the brush (on the left). You can see how the leaves have stayed in an upright position. In the second example (on the right) I have gone to Shape Dynamics>Angle Jitter>Control and chosen Direction from the drop down menu. You can see how the leaves have now followed the direction of the S shape. See image below for another area that you can fiddle around with to get some different effects for the brush. And one final thing that you can do with brushes, is to make a dual brush. Go ahead and pick a soft edged brush from your brushes, open the brush engine, pick Dual Brush from the left menu and then click through the various brushes till you get an effect in the preview window that you like. If you have a blank canvas open you can even try the brush and see what it looks like. I chose the Grass Brush to come up with the effect in the image below. You can also change the attributes of the second brush and the blend mode. Just before we get going, it is important that you build up any effect slowly/gradually. This can make painting a rather drawn out affair, but you can get some fantastic results if you’re willing to take the time. Remember that there are loads of different techniques out there for painting – choose one that suits the way you like to work – mix the different techniques together etc., example – when we finally get to the art history brush :) you will find a drop down menu where you can use the brush to Lighten, Darken etc., I choose not to work with them, I prefer to use the Dodge and Burn tools on 50% neutral grey layers set to soft light. Also remember that you can still use standard adjustments during and after to make your painting special. So lets get started. You can borrow my image of Dakota below to practise on if you like, copyright is mine etc., Before you start painting, do any necessary adjustments to the image i.e. colour correction etc., In other words, start painting with a finished image. I haven’t bothered with the start image here, I simply cropped out some of the excess trees to the right. Open the image and duplicate the layer by pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard or dragging the layer to the create new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. At this point you can add an effect to the duplicated layer if you want (entirely up to you). I chose Filter>Brush Strokes>Spatter with a Spray Radius of 2 and Smoothness set to 5. With the top layer active, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the create new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette – this will force the new layer, below any active layer. What we’re going to do here is set up a canvas. You don’t have to do this part if you don’t want to, but you might want to use it one day. Turn off the topmost layer and fill the blank layer with a colour of your choice. I chose a cream colour, go to Filter>Texture>Texturizer and choose Canvas – pick some settings to suit and take the opacity of the layer down to about 50%. Turn on the topmost layer again and take a snapshot of the image – in the history palette, name this layer painting/underpainting or something similar. Rename the layer in the layers palette the same thing. Once you’ve done that, click on the painting layer thumbnail in the Layers palette then Ctrl + A to select all – press the delete key to delete the contents of the layer and then press Ctrl + D to deselect. You should end up with something similar to the image below. If you made a canvas layer, click on that and then take the opacity all the way down. Click back on the painting layer and go to the side tool bar and select the Art History Brush, or you can press Y on the keyboard – if the History brush tool comes up, hold down the Shift Key and press Y again to scroll through to the Art History Brush. In the History Palette, click in the little blank square of the Painting layer to the left of the thumbnail to set this as the source. Clcik on the corresponding layer in the layers palette. Now you have to go and select a brush. Remeber the bits of information about the brush that I gave you at the beginning. There are plenty of free brushes available on the net as well. I’ve chosen a Photoshop default brush – Dry Brush. I’ve gone to the brush engine and chosen direction from the menu and turned off everything else except smoothing. You will be presented with a top toolbar – see image below. This is where you’ll choose the mode, opacity, style, area and tolerance. The settings you see in the above image, are the settings I’ve chosen to work with. Time to check – Painting layer selected in layers palette, art history brush icon in the square next to the painting snapshot in the history palette, settings for the art history brush changed to suit ….. lets begin. Short, sharp, small strokes of the mouse or pen will work the best. Go in the direction of the fur and zoom in really close to see what’s going on. If you need to scroll, hold down the spacebar and you will temporarily get the small hand icon so you can move the image. Change the size of your brush on the fly by using the left and right square bracket keys on the keyboard (situated near the P key) Left makes the brush smaller, right makes it bigger. In the image below I’ve roughly gone over the head area of the dog excluding the eye – if you click on the canvas layer you made, and return the opacity to 100% you will see what is going on without seeing the image itself. Reduce the opcity of the layer and click back on the painting layer in the layers palette. I’m not going to carry on and completey finish this image, but I do want to show you how I would go about adding shadows and highlights to the painting. Make sure you are working on the topmost layer (painting layer in this case) Hold down the Alt key and click on the create new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. A small dialogue box will appear, choose mode>soft light and check the ‘fill will 50% neutral gray’ click OK. Duplicate that layer and name one dodging and the other burning. Choose the burn tool from the side menu bar, or click O on the keyboard and then shift + O if the burn tool (hand) doesn’t come up first. Set the Range to shadows and the Exposure to around 10%. Reference the original image to find where the darker areas are, and slowly burn them in. Use the dodge layer to gently dodge in any highlights. You can see how my layer stack would start to look I changed the brush to Watercolour small round tip to do the eye and nose area. changed the brush again to Oil medium wet flow to carry on building the effect. If you want the image to be visible on the canvas you made, you will probably have to work it more than if you don’t. I would also make some more dodging and burning layers for the eyes and a layer to create a new catchlight. I’ve loosely done over the bottom half of Dakota. You can see the beginnings of my layer palette in the image below. I would have gone on and grouped the dodging and burning layers for eye, body etc., Ignoring the anything below the head area (cos I just quickly swiped over it – that thing I told you not to do LOL), you can see how easy it is to start building a painterly effect. You would of course, take much more care and time. Have fun!

This is regards to my Deviant Art account where I post my own stock for others to use. I hope that you enjoy the new range and find it useful. I would love to hear your thoughts on this: I have always looked sideways at people who went out of their way to do something for you and wondered “Whats the catch?”. / It is in this day and age where the saying “No one dose anything, unless they are getting something out of it” seems more true than anything, and I wondered when I had become so jaded. When had I started looking at gifts like they had hidden rows of teeth waiting to take a chunk out of me? I am starting to think that an artist community should be one of mutual support, learning and sharing. So why was I asking people who were using my stock to curb their artistic licences to create by my need for recognition? I guess it goes back to the idea that, I got off my backside and spent time taking photographs so I should get something out of it. Now I am sure that there are going to be a lot of people who are going to read this and think that I am taking a stab at them, Im not. This is just a personal revelation on what I believe concerning my own stock. I still belive that as an artist you have the right to ask for recognition for the time and effort that you have taken in creating your stock, I dont dispute that right. I respect your rights and follow your guidelines, respecting you and thanking you for your stock. For it is with your help that I have been able to create the artworks that I have. But I was thinking to myself “If someone uses my stock and creates a completely new artwork from my stock, is it my right to tell them that they can or cant create a print or add them to their other artist accounts, when the resulting artwork is from their own imagination?” / It just makes it hard for them to be able to follow their creative voices when they are following about eight sets of different rules. So I have gone though my gallery and made a majority of it UNRESTRICTED STOCK, so that it is easier for all of you out there who would like to create and cant afford ot purchase stock. So use it as you will, post it where you want, sell it as a print without my permission…Because the finished artwork is the result of your own ideas, and I do not claim any rights over them. WHAT IS UNRESTRICTED STOCK? / Unrestricted stock can be used for both personal and commercial projects, but it cannot be redistributed as stock. You are not required to obtain permission prior to using the stock off site or in DA prints. The only requirements are that the stock provider be notified and credited. / New Folder The only rules that apply are to my MODEL STOCK (as with any model stock that is out there) and because they are of people you do need to follow the rules: 1. FOR DEVIANTART USE ONLY. ASK PERMISSION BEFORE POSTING ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE NET!!! THE MODEL HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE YOUR REQUEST IF SHE/HE BELIEVES THAT THE SITE IS INAPROPRIATE OR THE ARTWORK IS UNACCEPTABLE. 2. NO RACIAL, HATE OR PRONOGRAPHIC WORKS OF ART ARE TO BE CREATED FROM THESE SHOTS. IT CAN BE DAMAGING TO THE MODELS REPUTATION AND LEAD TO LOSS OF A JOB OR LAW SUIT. 3. YOU NEED TO ASK PERMISSION BEFORE CREATING A PRINT. YOU ARE INITIALLY ASKING PERMISSION TO SELL THE PERSONS BODY/IMAGE. 4. YOU MUST CREDIT AND LINK THE ARTWORK BACK TO THIS WEBACCOUNT ON DEVIANTART, AND SEND A LINK VIA NOTE TO ME SO THAT I CAN VIEW THE ARTWORK AND SEE IF IT IS ACCEPTABLE FOR PUBLICATION. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE FOLLOWED UP BY SERVIER CONSIQUENCES – LIKE ME SUEING YOU FOR DEFFIMATION!! If you are unsure of an image in my Gallery send me a note and ask. I do not require you to do this, but it would be nice if you took the time to fave the stock images that you use in your artworks as a thank you.

UPDATE I will continue to add new tutorial links to THIS, one journal. As I add photoshop tutorials, they will go here. That way you can just favorite this one journal. From now on, new journals will simply let you know that this one has been updated with a new tutorial. Although, I am categorizing the series as a “how to”; it is based on a new artwork, the direction of which I have no idea what it will be. So it’s also a live journal of my process in creating THIS particular digital artwork. Many Digital Artists on Red Bubble need no guidance whatsoever. You know who you are. ;) This series does not assume anyone’s knowledge or skill level with tools of the trade. If you have just about any version of Photoshop Elements or Photoshop or even Gimp, you should be able to just get started working on an image. Tutorials run from 4-5 minutes, maximum. How to erase and blend objects. For Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or similar photo editing programs. Erasing is the most basic, and possibly the most critical skill of digital artists working with photo-manipulation. Photoshop Digital Art – How to Erase and Blend Objects Sometimes, using low resolution stock or image files for objects in large artworks is unavoidable. Here’s how to fix the ugly pixelation that would otherwise be noticeable in digital art at full size. Photoshop Digital Art – Dipixelating Low Resolution Objects How to add and blend Cat Hair without special brushes. For Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or similar photo editing programs that include a smudge tool. Photoshop Digital Art – Add and Blend Cat Hair Help prospective buyers visualize your art in their home or office building by showing it in a virtual setting. This tutorial shows how to use licensed stock photos of interiors, and place your framed art on the wall! Novice level tutorial for Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, GIMP, or similar image editing program. Photoshop Digital Art – Showcase Your Art in a Virtual Room You will note how I have a BUNCH of objects laying around, seemingly willy nilly, on this rather large psd canvas (9000×6000 pixels). It’s untitled, and I only vaguely know where it’s going, at the moment, even three (3) tutorials into the series, so far. / Some facts: about 15 or so objects are laying around on the canvas I started out with 17, that are shown in the video. The image below is after more erasing was done and 2 objects were nixed. Guess which ones. objects are sized to approximately what they might eventually be I may or may not use any or all of these objects I will erase carefully around each, regardless if they will be used; unless I determine that I don’t like them. Once any object is perfectly cleared of its background, it will go into an “objects.psd” file; so I can use it in some other image, any time. Objects are generally placed close to where I think they may end up. I have already placed the background I have already done some work on the main figure and her mirror. The window has already been transformed (perspective) and placed about where I want it. Importantly, I have just received, before uploading this tutorial, permission that I needed from one stock provider who doesn’t allow use of her stock off of DA or in commercial-type works, without express permission. That allows me freedom to continue this series, as intended and upload to YouTube. Stock permission is critical to my work. If you watch the tutorial, you’ll note the rolling credits at the end. This tutorial focuses only on the candelabra and shows it at 200% scale the entire tutorial. There may be easier ways to do this. But I don’t take “easy” when precision is required. Plus PSE does not have all the tools of PS. ;) I’m working in Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 for the Mac (currently the latest for the Mac.) It is different from 1.0, which I worked in for over a decade, as I discovered just a week or so ago; in that it imports abr (Adobe brush files), has a photo bin/viewer at its base, and does NOT have the fabulous Airbrush eraser from version 1. Otherwise, the differences are almost purely user interface. This note is added to satsify the curious. :) Bmail me or ask questions here, if you like. You can rate, comment, and subscribe to my channel (“francorpier”) at YouTube. Thanks. ;) Frannie
