Photography Legends of History A-Z Here is just a selection of female photographers from history that have helped shape photography and art as we know it. Some names you will know and some you may never have heard of before but all are worthy of a place in history. I have included a wikipedia info link via the artist’s name where possible, or their own website so if you wish you can read their biography, see more of their work and learn about their style…....so sit back and get inspired by some amazing artists from the last 100+ years! Enjoy Cheers Jules :) PS Some letters are filled with info about photography in general, this is not to say that women with last names beginning with E,I, J,V,X and Z don’t exist it’s just that I found them impossible to find on the web or I got freaked out by copyright issues. A – Diane Arbus / / Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park, New York 1962 Silver Gelatin Print B- Margaret Bourke-White / / Hats in the Garment District, New York, 1930 / -and this is Margaret at work on top of the Chrysler Building, NY 1934.. / / -I just had to add that one! Having reached the ripe old age of 40, and fast approaching 41, I’ve successfully steered my way through life by gathering items which have lead me to utilising some surplus funds to purchase art. Being a tight arse has its benefits. So, here’s my Top 10 secrets to affording art. 1. When on holidays, skip the expensive eateries and head to McDonald’s for a medium-sized Quarter Pounder meal. Always leave the family restaurant with plenty of napkins for use at home. 2. When visiting your parents, arrive just before meal times. Do not call them announcing your intention to visit. 3. Investigate the best gardens in your neighbourhood during daylight hours for the best flowers to cut. Return with scissors, bucket and torch just before dawn for the freshest blooms. 4. Purchase cheap cask wine and drink at home whilst watching free-to-air television. 5. Never leave coffee, tea and sugar sachets, toilet rolls, pens and tissues in your cheap motel room on departure. You’ll be surprised how useful these items are when putting together Christmas hampers. 6. Search your neighbourhood to see who has the newspaper delivered each morning. You work out the rest, BUT, don’t get caught! 7. Borrow your friends new release CD’s and do what you have to do. Copies of such make excellent birthday and xmas prezzies. 8. Never, I repeat, NEVER, buy a calendar. Visit your local pharmacy during December/January and ask politely for three calendars. If you only receive one, return again the next day and ask politely. If queried, say the neighbours pet Bullmastiff ate the first one. Repeat until you’ve secured three. 9. Fly Jetstar. 10. Gently steam stamps from envelopes for recycling purposes. So there you have it – Dazza’s Top 10 secrets to affording art. Whilst visiting this journal entry, carefully and slowly browse through my entire portfolio of images and select at least one to suit your taste and decor. Don’t be a tight arse and buy cards though. Go for the largest framed print option. Happy purchasing.

How do you create your best work. Do you plan and think about what you want to achieve, do you previsualise the end result in your mind before you even start, do you let your environment inspire you and make the decision on the spot. Do you tune out and go into a diffrent place to get inspiration. Does your art or photography just happen. I am normally going out with a very general idea and then let the environment inspire me. My best work or best shots happen when I stop thinking and start being. This may sound extremely cheesy but it is like the camera dissapears and there is just me and the subject left. When do you create your best work?

  • Making a Profit Because of Redbubble

Do I really need to say this? We can profit from our art on Redbubble. I get the feeling people are not understanding this concept. Redbubble is merely and only our personal art gallery. It’s not a static destination where you stop and stare, but a dynamic gallery of photographs forever showing art that best represents what we’d like the general public to purchase. From Cards through to Framed wall-hangings, our work is available to purchase online. Redbubble provides a slick website that is so easy for choosing frames/laminates/cards/t_shirts/etc, purchasing the product and easy-delivery system. They make it amazingly easy to be a small-business owner. Or at least make a small to moderate amount of play-money on the side. I encourage all Artists to use Redbubble to get started, but don’t let it stop you in your tracks. It staggers me how many people are sitting behind their computers with tapping fingers saying, “OK, Now they can see me, they will come here any moment now to purchase my art!” “No they won’t!! You have to find the customers yourself. Redbubble enables you to purchase your own work … and then on-sell it. / My Redbubble Business In August 2007 I purchased thirty cards via Redbubble. I gave five as gifts to very close friends, simply blank cards without messages, but with a simple note … do what you like with this. / Some people kept them, others used them within minutes to send off as Birthday cards. Most asked where I got them from and can they have more? The remaining cards sold within 24hours of arrival from Redbubble! Then I emailed those people, other friends and family, showing them my RB gallery. I have repeat customers because of this initial free promotion. We order $150 worth of cards and other stuff each fortnight, either in pre-orders or for stock. I have a box of about 120 card-ographs in stock at anytime. My lovely wife keeps a very intricate and statistical ledger of all cards in stock, those sold and those on order. Clients choose from the gallery (telling me which ones they like via email, with the name of the artwork, the style they’d like it presented _card, laminate, etc and how many of each_), we order and receive, then we take it to the customer. About a two-week turn-around time. I’ve also purchased a dozen 12”x8” of the ‘prettier’ of our photographs on each of our galleries, which are easily viewed in an A3-portfolio. These are used to determine the appropriate frame and matte colour when clients choose them. Now that Christmas is gone, I can reveal that White Gums II was picked off my gallery by a work-friend’s mother here in Adelaide, I had it framed locally, and it now sits pride of place in their lounge room! I’m very proud of that!! From the corporate world through to the suburban billiards room, everyone wants a suitable image to hang on the wall. Because I have clients who prefer not to purchase online, I’ve made it my responsibility to acquire the final product and deliver it to their offices and homes. And this system works beautifully. (More about this in the next four weeks…) 12”x8” printing from TEDS , Rundle Mall, Adelaide City. To parody and plagerise a famous quote: “Give someone a fish and they eat for a day, give them a camera with with a zoom lens, and they can shoot the most beautiful carp every day of the week!“

Looking through RedBubble, it’s interesting to see the differences in how different artists approach their photography. I’ve begun to notice that RedBubble really is a haven for the more “out there” photography, the kind of art that may not win traditional competitions, but breaks the rules or is a real expression of the artist. While some people walk the line between both, it seems that often you are a conceptual photographer, or the kind that tries to find a photo anywhere. I belong to the latter group. I love waiting for moments to just happen, to find great photos in banal settings, or to go and photograph something quite common that every now and then becomes brilliant, through chance lighting or a rare interaction. Even in my pet photography I rebel against setting up the animals into poses or pushing them into studio settings. I prefer to wait for the moments and the expressions to happen naturally and spontaneously. With my zoo photography, it is a buzz to be the only one left waiting for something to happen while the rest of the crowd got bored and left. It’s sometimes difficult to wait for moments to just happen. There’s no guarantee they will obviously, and time is money. All my favourite shots though have happened out of the blue or without planning, and that gives me the most satisfaction. It seems one of my most popular photos on RedBubble is this one: This was a fluke. Taken at a Zoo, this Gorilla was mesmerised by some bubbles being blown by the visiting children. For about a minute there was real silence in the enclosure as the human children and young Gorilla both watched the same bubble float above them and then both visibly smiled when it popped. Somehow this feels more special than if I’d been able to wave a fruit over the top of the Gorilla’s head to manipulate the expression. Another one is this – my favourite Lion shot. This moment between two brothers only lasted about a minute but it’s not often you get to witness a moment of tenderness between animals normally depicted as ferocious killers. Even this portrait of my dog which turned out to be my favourite of him was taken without planning. In fact as I took it I was joking to a friend about how he likes to pose and wait for the click of the shutter. Without planning or intention, I managed to capture what I think really expresses his personality. I suppose even those images of mine that may appear set up, never were. This shot (which is always linked in my head as the thematic equivalent of the Grandaddy song in the description) was also just a candid, but it was easy to see at the time the universal appeal of ‘man against the world’. I can equally see the fun of conceptual shots. Bringing to life the vision in your head must be difficult and fraught with frustration at times! I wonder how many people enjoy both types of photography, or do most people stick to one type?

  • What Makes You Think Your Art is Good Enough?
    by Stephen Mitchell

What makes you think your art is good enough to upload to RedBubble? 1 Gut instinct? / This is the best way to know if your art, ...

What makes you think your art is good enough to upload to RedBubble? 1 Gut instinct? / This is the best way to know if your art, writing, or photography is good. For photographers, we simply know when the shot matches what we were trying to achieve. For writers, it’s when we write from the heart. For artists, and I mean people who manipulate binary-pixels as much as I mean painters etc, I imagine you know when your art has reached its point where it cannot be modified any further without ruining it. That’s right, ruining the final result. / Gut instinct tells you when you have just reached that pinnacle and achieved the art you imagined in the first place or saw through the view-finder. 2 Did someone in your family like the shot? / Trust me, I know from bad experience that relying on the opinion of family (to tell me what makes a GREAT shot) is never a good idea. As much as they believe in your artwork, they cannot see through your eyes. / I only upload a few distinctly better shots to RedBubble out of every few hundred. I might shoot between twenty and a hundred photographs from the one location, but I know almost immediately if it was a good shot or not. On occasion I only have to take one shot to get THAT shot, the one that gets shown to you, my friends and my family. What makes you think your art is good enough to have printed? 1. You received 1,000 ‘Oh, Nice!’ Comments ? / Nope, this is not a good enough reason. Your art needs to be an extension of who you are. Despite what you see here on RedBubble, your art should not be a popularity contest, nor a multitude of ‘nice’ comments. Much as I enjoy getting a few nice words about my work, I’ve recently learned that unless the person actually says something constructive, unique and interesting about the actual photograph … the comment may just be a stock answer to everything they see here. NOTE: OK, so sometimes it can be difficult to put into words what you like about some one else’s art, but at least say something unique. Yes, my photography of flowers have DOF, POV, macro-detail, lots of colour and are ‘hot’, ‘cool’, ‘wow’, and ‘whippitycrack’. Now tell me WHY you like it, WHAT it is that makes it good and HOW many you are going to purchase! :D 2. Only you can know if your art is worth selling on RedBubble. / Do you think someone would purchase it as a card? Or are you just showing off an image that you want others to consider before you commit to it? Ok, so we all do that occasionally. I’m not saying it’s wrong to upload the incomplete and unfinished, but this is RedBubble. It’s not just a community, forum and friend-making location: It’s an online print-shop. 3. Don’t be concerned with anyone’s opinion before presentation. / Upload those few shots you really believe capture what you were attempting. If you really believe the art is good, show it to the RedBubble world the whole internet. Because everyone online and offline is now going to see you and your art. RedBubble is a name, not a fortified location. Our comments, words, suggestions, responses, queries and ‘drool’ will be carbon copied across the planet and archived on the “WWW” Today I shot 5GIG of photographs in 5 hours. / I had a day in the Adelaide CBD, revisiting previous locations, visiting a few new places and discovering new things at each location that I did not see the first time! This added up to around 1,000 photographs. / ... I’ll be the first to admit that less than 200 are any good. / ... Less than 60 are very good. / ... I’ve uploaded only TWO of them to RedBubble. I might add a few more. / ... SEVEN have been loaded to my flickr gallery . All are getting lots of traffic, with very few comments. Just the way I like it. Each of those photographs got some pixel-manipulation. Yes, I do, when necessary. Each of those photographs were one of a several exactly the same … but I decided that one would serve the purpose I was looking for. / I didn’t ask anyone on RedBubble or Flickr if they would like to see it : I made that decision while perusing them on my 500GIG HD. A lot were shot purely because I like architecture, but many were shot because I figured they’d look good as a card or framed image. One of them is a test-image, to see the response/traffic rate. See if you can pick it. 4. Would you delete or replace a photograph if enough people said they didn’t like it? / Seeing as how so many of us rely on the comments of others to fulfill our online life, IF someone was to suggest a fault, change, modification or complete make-over of your art work, would you? I believe I might change an image. I have certainly changed my opinion on pixel-manipulation! I know I’d delete an image, but only from the RedBubble-database. I’ve done that several times. Where’s your thoughts on this? You’ll notice I rarely make comments on other people’s art. There is a LOT of great work on RedBubble. I just don’t have the time to tell you. Anyhow, you know your work is good. Or you would never have taken the time to put it on RedBubble …. right?

  • Why We Photograph.....

Why I am writing this at some ungodly hour of the morning is really beyond me, I am not even sure…..blame on me sitting here looking, thinking, taking in, reading into, seeing, all the images on Red Bubble. I suppose at 5:52 in the morning, under-coffee’d, let’s the mind wander, especially when viewing art. In fact, it made me wonder straight to the topic of this journal…...”Why We Photograph….” For me, it is not easy to describe nor easy to write about. It is rather personal in some ways, and obvious in others. It is about feeding my creative right brain, .....it is funny when I sit here editing a shot how I get lost in “the zone” and my world around me almost stops….the same way it did when I used to draw and paint. Therapy. Plain and simple. It is my meditation….. This is one simple aspect and there are probably 1000s of other little ones along the way as well. I also shoot for a higher purpose, a higher sense of romance, and a higher sense of hope and feeling. Some of you here know exactly what I am in reference to, having followed me on deviantArt for years. Others, well, you will have to read in to that as I am kinda restrained from talking about it….sadly. And it isn’t my choice. Let’s just say that in these last 3 years, I have learned a lot, about me, about what it means to be alive, about what it means to be accepted, loved, and given an opportunity that few will ever have. And every night I thank the Lord above for that. It is odd though, and many ask why I am on so many sites for photography…..and honestly, for once, I seriously think I have an answer to that question…... After much soul searching the last few years on that subject, looking for an answer and never finding one, I now know why. I am what is called a ‘visual learner’, meaning that I learn things by seeing them…..this all goes back to my childhood and how I am learning disabled, still am, but have serious learned to compensate. It also explains my whole creative side…..see I suck at math, and anything along those kinda lines, but I am the only one in my whole family that is a creative. This is where I compensate at…..I am not to good on left brain kinda things. but the right side, I will jump right in the fire in a heartbeat! This has all lead up to the above question---and now an answer why I am on so many sites…... When I view photography, I suppose I take it in differently than most. I de-construct the image, and examine it, usually I am able to do this quite quickly….having done it since my childhood. I look at it like a doctor looks at a patient…..trying to find out more about the image, how it was shot, exposed, compensated for, processed, etc etc on and on…..I learn this way! And the more photography I see, the more i learn also! As I said, I am a visual learner. I dive in, I want to know all, and photography is something I want to know more about. The technique, the process, the marketing, the professionalism, the workflow, all aspects…..all areas. How it is done, how it is presented, how it is sold, how it is bought, how it is shot, every single aspect that there is. And by being on so many sites, it allows me to take it all in…..my right side of my brain has a massive appetite…....to say the least. However it also doesn’t come without frustration. being a member of so many sites has caused some problems for me in the real world….sometimes I get a lil lost, never realizing just how much time I spend looking at this damn screen. When I sure as hell should be doing something else. It has caused issues in my personal life, issues which shouldn’t be issues, issues that are so far unresolved. And issues which must be solved asap. Hell, I have probably said to much already…so moving forward…... I aspire, I dream, I create, I want to sell my images and dream of the day I can really make an honest living from my work, I dream of the day editors call or email me asking me if I have some shot from Colorado…...I aspire to be the best I can be….and I hope one day my shots will grace the cover of the likes of magazines which you can buy in the super market. Will it happen??? I don’t know. I wrestle with inner demons a lot, I struggle a lot with the actual ‘marketability’ of my shots. I really am not that confident in that aspect at all….I want my shots on greeting cards, yet when I try to sell them, no one buys them. What scares me the most is the thought of this-—- / My pictures are nice, pretty, and well done, but not something which would sell. So I examine this, I reflect on this, I try to learn from this, and I try to compensate for this. A lot of it though is left brain, and well…..it is hard for me, honestly. I look at peoples work that does sell and I think “ok so so and so did this, so what if I…....”, see I learn….always am lol I think all of us in many respects are on this big journey together…...we never really know where it leads us, but we do know what we enjoy, and we all have our reasons why we shoot. If photography has taught me anything, it has taught me to have a better eye, and how even in the most ugly of circumstances, there can always be beauty. It has taught me to see the world and nature in a whole other way. It has made me think….and to become aware of conservation. Yeah, I know why I shoot….I know why…...I shoot because it is something I not only love, but must do. / —-John

What a shock and wonderful start to my day to discover that a photo of mine was featured in The Fine Art of Photography. Honestly, I was surprised and honored that something of mine was actually accepted into that group so to be featured is just a wonderful treat and so encouraging for this fledgling photographer. Thank you so much to the group moderators! ~Sande On The Run

OMG what a day! I’ve been on edge all afternoon! I’ve been anxiously waiting for the time to head to the printers to pick up the gallery images! WOW!!! is all i can say. What an amazing experience! I cannot fully express the emotions that are still coursing through me at the sight of physically handling and viewing my works at those sizes!!! it is truly and undescribable feeling!! Excitement, joy, amazement and so many more emotions run through you all at once!!! I head to the framers tomorrow to pick matting and frames! I am posting one photo with the journal, i’ll keep the rest off line until the show begins. Anyone interested in seeing the other images please just send me a bubble mail and i’ll be happy to show you the images. Wow! i’m still so blown away by this entire experience! Once again I want to extend a very warm and heartfelt thank you to all of you!! You have all been so supportive and loving! Without all of you this would be not be the same wonderful ride. A warm hug to all of you. There are too many of you to mention by name but i love you all dearly. / You all rock my world every day
