DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT AIMED AT ANY ONE SPECIFIC SOUL OR ABOUT THE REDBUBBLE PHENOMENON IT’S MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON THE TOPIC (Before anyone gets upset)... *What is Quality Assurance??? * Should all art (regardless of marketable quality) be considered a product for sale… The internet did it to music where we have too much choice, not enough controls (over lots of things), and too much inferior product because it hasn’t been tested. If art is to sell in this environment should the market be considered at all? Traditionally there were (and are) gallery curators (or record companies) that filtered the ‘product’ and marketed it because they know what sells, who buyers are and what they are willing to pay… It’s something that is not limited to art. In a capitalist commercial world, simply (without saying anything to anyone specific on redbubble, I don’t want to upset anyone) but how do we sort the mediocre from the brilliance without similar controls to ensure a high quality market… and… give new learners a benchmark of quality to strive for… Maybe I know too much about organisation and business, I have worked in tv, events, commercial design, advertising, marketing, publications, sound, university multi media, state government, printing etc. etc. etc. These are all creative industries, Qld University of Technology have a course named, Creative Industries… but they don’t just let any old drawer, picture snapper etc. in because there is a technical pre-requisite of expectation… now anyone can make art… yes??? (I admit not everyone wants to study art at uni) but… How do the people who spent a good part of their life actually learning, integrating and creating the day to day work and products and events etc… protect their own integrity if every amateur expects to be critiqued in the same way??? Just another perspective… PS. How can trained artists help amateurs get better technically? There are techniques that can be enhanced and refined to progress skills, if they are pointed out are they being critical or constructive??? I have no tertiary qualifications in the arts, I studied Graphic Art and Advertising at a commercial college and learned from talented individuals around me. I make no claim to brilliance in the art world and have sold work contractually in creative fields and a few items on RedBubble (still haven’t reach my cash-in limit hee he, but oh well)

  • How the Bride of Innocence was conceived . . .
    by Jaeda DeWalt

Why Red? / I love accenting images with Red because red is the color of pain, the color of love, of stolen innocence, it is the color that flows during birth when a woman brings life into this world, it is often the color that flows out of us as we leave this earth. Today i am sharing part one of, “The Bride of Innocence”. The backgrounds you see are from the balcony pics i took during the daytime. WHAT THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE ISN’T My fellow creative Marny Barnes offered me some words that were powerful and rang true: I refuse to beleive that you don’t hold a peice of that innocene still…somewhere in all that torture you were strong enough to keep some of that innocence safe and just for you. AND I will tell you why I think that. YOU STILL see beauty all around you, / You bleed beauty and innocence out of all your work, / You touch the beauty in the torture and the pain and it grows roses…and color….and ART. If you had no innocence, you would not see the world and other peoples art with such wonder. I SEE INNOCENCE IN YOU. / YOUR HEART IS PURE AND BEAUTIFUL. YOUR ART IS BEAUTIFUL. / THE WORDS YOU LEAVE TO INSPIRE OTHERS / (ON YOUR OWN WORK…..AND THEIRS) IS BEAUTIFUL There is a mourning for the innocence i never got to have or experience as a child. / That is part of what makes incest and sexual abuse so painful. HOWEVER . . . / Marny brought to the light of my consciousness, something i failed to realize and address in my work . . . That my sweetness, my love, did not die when i was abused. It is still at my core and at my essence. My love of sweet joys remain, my softness, light, grace and hope. And these are aspects i will seek to express in my future survivor-orientated work. And i thank you Marny so much for bringing that to the surface of my consciousness. THE CONCEPTION / The Bride of Innocence (Jaeda as the Brides) was conceived back toward the end of May. That’s when construction workers put up scaffolding and started tearing down the supports on my 3rd story balcony and tarped it off. The construction guys worked a few days on my balcony, tearing stuff down, said something about needing to get permits – due to structural damage . . . and they haven’t been back since. So i decided i would get some pictures, now that my balcony is double long (they tore down the wall that separates my neighbor and me). Everything was bathed in a surreal blue light, from the tarp. The scaffolding was also double long and it looked like an endless hallway leading to the land of dreams, to heaven, anything your imagination can conjure up. The balcony itself looked very sad, broken and i kind of liked it’s decayed appeal and thought, at least i could use this to my advantage, creatively! So i went out on my balcony, during the day and night, and took lots of pictures. At night the tarped scaffolding resembled a boat marina or harbor at night. It looked so very different from, the hallway to heaven, of daylight. Previous to the balcony pictures, i had taken some studio pics of me in a makeshift bridal gown. I borrowed the bridal veil from my sister. Ripped the satin bottom off of an old nightgown for the top and used a sheer window treatment panel for the gown part/bottom because i don’t sew! LOL The bridal pictures i took of myself in the studio are what popped into my head as i was photographing the balcony and “The Bride of Innocence” was conceived. It is a slightly sad, disturbing series . . . but i wanted the next series i created to be along the lines of my Red Jane series. I felt like digging deep into all the little nooks and crannies of my soul and Spirit. All of those dark, repressed places that cry out to be acknowledged and expressed. partake and enjoy PEACE and LIGHT / j a e d a :) The Bride of Change The Bride of CHANGE / Peers through the isolating veil of pain and abuse – she is vulnerable / Her weakness is her strength because she OVERCOMES For she will no longer succumb to a tainted existence / Nor the toxic relationships, that leave dark stains on her soul / She knows . . .these ghosts of perversion and possession must go And the red of pain mixes with pink whispers of hope / She summoning the strength / To reach out, start anew and become WHOLE © Jaeda DeWalt listen to Jaeda recite The Bride of Change / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- The Bride of Innocence Pretty in Pink / She softly mourns for the bride she never got to be / No pristine, white gown for this lovely lady / She will never be the Bride of INNOCENCE She does not seek what she can not be given . . . / For innocence is the one gift, / That once stolen, / Can never be replaced yet the loss is forgiven © Jaeda DeWalt listen to Jaeda recite The Bride of Innocence / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- The Bride of Pain The Bride of PAIN is stuck inside / A blurry nightmare / As her subconscious rewinds her past / And plays it for her – over and over again . . . It is the kind of nightmare where / Violated flesh bleeds red / And the sound of innocence being stolen gets lost / Inside a hazy maze of surreal blue hues She falls to her knees in agony / She wants to find her way out of this repetitive dream / She knows to save herself / She must change the ending . . . © Jaeda DeWalt listen to Jaeda recite The Bride of Pain —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- CLOSE-UPS

Thanks to Jen Wahl for the journal about having buyers customise their own calendars from your work … and Jen has made a sale by doing this. Congratulations Jen on sharing this with us all. This is a wonderful idea and I would like to offer this to others to consider. I would be only too willing to compile a calendar from my work at your selection ... and I’ll extend it one step further by offering to take requests for photos in my local area that you, as the buyer would like taken and added to the calender … or to purchase individually as a card or print. • A "personal style"?

Hey all, I have been thinking about the concept of a personal artistic style. Mostly I was thinking about the fact that, apart from the fact that I am usually drawn to flowers and nature, I don’t have a style. Is it important in the long run to develop a signature element to one’s work, such as a particular treatment, color, subject, etc.? Many of the very talented people here have very defined styles…when I see it, I know immediately who took it. Do you do this intentionally, or is it a kind of refinement that just naturally comes with time and experience? Right now I feel so overwhelmed by the vast horizon of the world that I feel I could never even begin to consciously pick one kind of thing to portray. I guess it must just develop as an individual develops creative abilities and passions in a certain direction. If that’s the case (I’m guessing it is) then would you say a developed artist WILL have a personal style? And the corollary: must an artist have a personal style to be considered an experienced artist? I’d love to hear your opinions. Thanks for reading, folks!

  • FOR MY FRIEND AND FELLOW ARTIST AND WRITER: AN INTERVIEW - INTRODUCING HILTON M. BRISCOE
    by JaneAParis

For my friend and fellow artist and writer: An Interview - Introducing Hilton M Briscoe / ...

For my friend and fellow artist and writer: An Interview - Introducing Hilton M Briscoe They said you could have ten questions, they did not say where you could start counting from - 0)What do you do when you are not doing art, writing or photography? / / What do I do when not writing? Listen to music mostly, I am always listening to music. I am usually on myspace trying to get people to talk to me, no one ever does, lol. 1) Who do you think you are? This is a very serious question. Who are you? / Who am I? To be honest I have no idea, I am only 18 and I haven’t lived enough to know myself. One thing I do know about myself is I am not the kind of person that is happy sitting in the crowd living my life like everyone else, this is true in all areas of my life. I am easily depressed as some people might have noticed but I have never seriously considered suicide, living a normal life with a 9 to 5 job and a constant routine that is only changed by government sanctioned holidays is something that makes me feel like I would seriously consider suicide. That probably makes me sound lazy and I would disagree, I’m just don’t fit into normal society. I have to make my own way in this world, I probably need peoples help cause this world confuses me sometimes. 2) Who are the most important people in your life and why? or Who do you love? This includes pets. / My parents are the most important people in my life, my father is getting on in age(he is 64 now) and is really ill so he doesn’t have much time left, when he dies I think both me and my mother will be devastated, but I will try to help her through the rough time. / King is another important creature in my life, he is my dog and he is 3 years old this November the first. I was with his mother while she was giving birth to him, he was tiny and I thought he was dead but he wasn’t. He was named after Kind Diamond(thrash metal legend) because when he was born he had a diamond pattern in white fur on the back of his neck(he has predominately black fur), it’s kind of funny because all through Sally’s(the mother) pregnancy I was telling myself I wouldn’t name my puppy something stupid like King or Boxer or one of those names men trying to overcompensate give their bulldogs. / I would say anyone who can make me happy when I am depressed is important in my life, so that’s all my friends and a few people on Redbubble. Out of the lot I will give Lexxy a special mention, she is my best friend and I love her to bits, she is going through a rough patch in her life down in London with her boyfriend, I wish I could help her but there is little I can do. 3) What are your dreams like, the ones you aspire to about the future. You can also share some of your sicker dreams too if you want:-) / To be honest I never remember my dreams, I have had quite a few nightmares and I absolutely love them. My favourite one was when I was visiting a travelling circus, I can’t remember the details because it is a childhood nightmare but it turned out it was a circus full of cannibalistic clowns and a dragon that they sacrificed children too. I loved that nightmare, I was about 6 when I had it. Ooh another nightmare I had actually terrified me and I woke up sweating when I dreamt it(I was about 4). In the nightmare there was a woman who was kidnapping children and she came to Coventry, all the kids in my neighbourhood decided to run away so we could hide from her and we all moved into the countryside, we lived in a small shanty town made from sheet metal we found on a farmers tip and lived in it happily for a few days. But the woman found us and she crept into our little village while we all slept at night and started putting us all in one at a time into her magic bag(in dungeons and dragons terms it would be called a “True Bag of Holding”) but one of the kids woke up before she could put him in her bag and he screamed which woke us all up, we all started running in every direction in the pitch black countryside night and I can remember crawling through a hedge and running as fast as I could through a field but she caught me, I woke up as she was putting me in her bag. Fantastic nightmare, I didn’t tell it very well, you had to be there, lol. 4) What is your favorite painting? -favorite photo? -favorite song? -favorite poem? -favorite short story? -favorite child’s nursery rhyme? -favorite child’s lullaby -favorite child’s story? and -favorite (any kind of art, your choice)? / My favourite painting would be “House of the Hanged Man” by Cezanne, I have never really thought of my favourite photo, I would say a photo of my family and a another family we were friends with on holiday in Rhyl(North Wales) with the sea in the background. My favourite song? I could name hundreds, but right now I will say “The Hunger” by The Distillers. I do have a favourite poem but I can’t remember it right now, lol but I remember it is about a person with a hyper sense of self importance, extreme arrogance and even psychopathic tendencies. My favourite short story would be my life, lol. I like 3 blind mice, I don’t know any lullabies, lol. My favourite child story would be “The Farm”, yes it’s not technically a child’s story but it has talking animals in and I loved that even if I didn’t get what the story was really about. My favourite kind of art would be either psychedelic or horror art, maybe a mix of both. 5) What do you like and what do you dislike about your homeland? If you could live somewhere else, where do you think you would choose and why? / What do I like about England? The fact that rock and metal was born here, lol. I dislike most other things about England and can’t wait to get away from it. I would love to live in Norway or Finland, I’m a Viking at heart, lol. 6) Who do you like on red bubble? / I like you, one of my favourite writers. Marlo and Ash Sivils are definitely my favourite artists. There are a load of very inspirational people on redbubble, Kathleen and Robert Knapman are just 2 out of the loads I could name. Oh then there is Gordon, he’s great at just about everything and I don’t think he is completely human, burningark is like the goth lord and I look up to him artistically and musically. 7) Why do you like art, writing, and photography? / I have a bad relationship with art to be honest, often I am left feeling empty by it which is why I get so enthusiastic about the artists I do get, which includes Ash, burningark, Gordon, Kathleen and Robert. / I love writing, it is so easy for me and I am good at it, I am not good at very much, lol. / Photography to me is about capturing exact moments in time, some cultures believe that a camera steals part of your soul when you have your picture taken, I don’t believe this but I am certainly uneasy about getting my picture taken. That has more to do with self esteem to be honest. 8) What do you think your two best poems are so far and what do you think your two best pieces of art are so far have been? Please share them with us below? / My 2 best poems? I have no doubt my favourite is I Dreamt of Heaven, and I suppose my other is Masks, Pens and Truths I Kept Hidden My best pictures are easily Nightmare – God Got His Revenge When I Took This Picture, and My Dog Is So Gay He Plays Dramatic Dead, the second one is of king. 9) Who are your influences – who or what inspires you in your creative work? / Dani Filth’s(of Cradle of Filth) inspires me, his lyrics are so dark and melodramatic I hope one day I could write like he does. 10) For the last question, I get to ask you the same thing since we interviewed each other – Now for my last question I shall ask the age old question(with my little story to explain how you had the foresight to bring the 3 things). You are marooned on a desert island, you had a premonition in your dreams the night before that it was going to happen and you quite fancy a nice break on a desert island so you decide to not try and stop it, what 3 things did you bring along with you and why? / 1)I would bring a manual on how to construct a small water powered power station / 2)I would bring a CD player and Cradle of Filth’s album “Nymphetamine” which would already be in the CD player so still counts as one item(in my logic, lol) / 3)I shall steal your 3rd item, a hot man who loves me. lol Thanks a lot my friend, smiles from Jane:-)

  • The value of an artwork/s
    by JP100

Last week while riding on the bus i overheard a conversation between a couple who were discussing artworks and the value of each piece or pieces in the womans collection her response to the question of “do you think the piece in question was worth it” was so apt and true to artwork/s (especially when the subject is so hotly and often times pettily argued) that i had to put it here on the web. The lady responded to her partners question of “do you think that painting is worth that much money” by simply saying that when she first saw the work in question she felt filled with joy and an emense feeling of wonder and had to buy the work as she felt connected to it. Ever since buying the work (im assuming many years ago) she has been through a divorce and the passing of family members, wonderfull successes and accomplishments and so much more. through all these times the painting had been there, in the hardest times she would look at the painting and through all the grief and sadness hurt and pain she would feel the spark of wonder and joy flicker to life again and she would find the strenght to go on and have hope for her future. When the best times and the successes and accomplishments happened in her life and brought much happiness and celebration contentment and joy of there own she would see the wonder and joy in the painting and feel the connection of the painting in her own life and was very thankfull for being in a position to purchase the painting and share the joy of that artwork with those around her. Did she think it was worth it? / she said in short “that painting has been a bright spark and shining light in my life and helped me through some of the toughest times and shared in and also brought joy and happiness to others in my circle of family and friends there is not enough money in the world that would make me sell that piece or a great many of the other works in my collection” This woman seemed to really love artwork (or at the very least her own pieces) and i think she summed up the answer to the question quite nicely. So how do you value an artwork (not including investors and gallery owners who do have to take a whole heap of other factors into account INCLUDING the feelings of the viewer/purchaser or taking into account the appreciation of displays of skill and masterfull expression of technique) I feel its up to each individual or group if its a group purchase what does the work mean to you and how does it fit into your life. Who knows really what will make the work valuable to each individual and at the end of the day its how that person feels about the work/s and there own opinion on that work/s that matters most, so next time somebody asks is it worth that much maybe they can ask the person who just bought the work for there point of view. If a person is asking from an investment point of view and its your work they are asking about then obvoiusly you will have to have some feedback to give them on what makes your work valuable and give them examples of this value. I.e growing profile in your field of artworks (watercolour, oils, drawing etc) positive responses from patrons and previous purchasers etc and some background info about you exhibitions and the like. for more on the ways and means of being a “professional/career artist” check out www.myartcareer.com its a very helpfull site for anybody thinking of becoming a career artist. I hope this has helped any and all who read this journal entry, my general rule is if you love the work or keep coming back to it then go for it! Thank you all for the feedback and comments, keep bubbling! / Regards, Jon (jp100)

I was looking through David Librach’s work this evening, some stunning photographs, of which one in particular, Yin and Yang connected with me on a particular emotional level as well as the more academic perspective i usually appreciate things from. It reminded me, instantaneously, of the only other moment i had looked at a piece of art and been moved to uncontrollable tears. This was 8 years ago, whilst i was working in The Netherlands, as an Intern at the Former Yugoslavia War Crimes Tribunal, and about to return to the UK to start work in criminal law here in Leicester. I attended a party, it was a tribunal thing, and i was hugely happy and having a good time, or so i thought, until i saw a picture on the wall, it was a coastal scene, the sea, a small beach and a large sand dune over which an African / Arabic shepherd was tending his flock of goats. It just kicked me in the stomach and from then until 4 or so hours later i was a wreck – the first time i had cried since i was a child in fact. I’ve been looking for the picture ever since, because it taught me that art can trigger memories or feelings deeply suppressed, and that can be a good thing, if properly managed. I’m really happy i don’t find myself breaking down at the work i see on here.. but its a great thing to connect with a piece of work and feel it on different levels. And if anyone out there knows what that particular painting / print was.. then i would appreciate a head’s up! Simon

Why do we have to follow others footstep / When could we start walking on our own path / Why does your family constantly pour you cold water over your head / When will my volcaneo stop erupting, with the rage that make you want to punch through the wall and the pain may ease your anger a little / When will the fight stop / When will the war end / Do I go back to the cave, and be a dark knight / Darker then ever before when I did attempt the unthinkable / My heart still beating, I hope it stop soon for to end my suffering / Where the place you live have no value and no meaning / Be a shadow where words can’t stab you, where loves one can’t hurt you.

I sometimes find that being a visually focused person can actually have its advantages: / – You can make something of nothing, for example, a lesser/non-visual person will look at a grey building and think “a grey building”, whereas a visual person will look at that same building and think “that grey building has so much raw emotion, the drabness of the grey accentuates its ability to blend in with surrounding buildings. It could almost serve as a blank canvas. Its not just grey, its a colour in its own right. Somehow i can capture the spirit of this image in an art form such as photography or a painting”. This makes sense, doesnt it? Although sometimes this amazing visual technique can be a problem when it comes to picturing things in too much detail, more than you may want to know! In conclusion, being a naturally visual person can help you be a great artist, if you know how to use it to your advantage.

Well, hey, I am glad they have them long fancy galleys to but the works of such novices as Renoir, Van Gogh, Salvador Dali? ( a kid cudda dun taut him to do better than wat he dun!). I always admired a few of the works ‘cause some had great detail in them…they did not have our hr cameras..not even an instamatic throwaway and yet….a good few left some mighty fine work to inspire us contemporary artists on…Gracious they used mediums such as duck grease and bees wax to put their pigment colors into…juices of berries, koffe grounds….We have it so much better with our mediums and color tints…..heck we got MS Paint an many other softwares to help us along…photo worshops to help us edit the bad parts of pictures to make brand new smackin’ gooduns…. The arts of yore ….I am glad we gottem….but them filty rich don’t have ‘class’ like we have here on the Bubble….they should be ‘investing in the stuff I see on the front pages of this site / ....Good Lands o’ Pete…Awesome talent going on here from every turn of the globe called ‘Terra firma’ I am ever so proud of my association with the ‘klassy folk” we have here.I reckon some of those ‘speculators might be right and some be outright stupid… If the value of real art is in the eyes of th beholder(s), then folks…kudos t’ ya all! / I’d just love to have one of tthose rich speculators lay dwn some green on any of my work, your work and make us all nice and happy!

A lot of my work has been sold across Victoria in various craft markets and galleries. It all began at the Queen Victoria Market around 1999. I personally crafted the picture frames, and purchased materials made locally, or supported local business. I moved on to better quality frames, moisture free backings, and longevity printing (over 100 years lifespan in non-direct sunlight). I have been in a Southbank gallery, and often in bourke street Melbourne (Amazing Galleries franchise). I was a regular at various craft markets in the recent years, including the famous Williamstown Craft Market, Craft Markets Victoria, and Southbank market. My Graphic Design work paid for my photography and printing, and all my equipment! Being a freelance artist, I have the most freedom, and I set my own goals and targets. I love nature work, and it’s application in abstract art. I once thought that it would be great to have a little reminder in every home, of the beauty and infiniteness of the natural elements. / My camera is the eye, my computer the tool, and my imagination the spirit of my creations. All of my work is “LIVING ART”, and the energy contained within each piece is uplifting to the spirit, healing, balancing, and inspiring.
