  • In memoriam / As I mentioned in a previous post, my mother used to tend orchids, and I never noticed her work. Mother-daughter relationships can be complex – look at the number of books and articles written on the subject. Ours was no less or no more complex than millions of other relationships. With this in mind, I purchased two orchid plants yesterday to tend and nurture and to photograph, so that I could learn to see them. With mother’s day approaching, these particular flowers have been much on my mind. My mother died four years ago in May. I’m just beginning to understand our long and complex struggles – and love. Constructive comments welcomed. This is the second attempt – or rather the first attempt from last night, using two lights on stands. (Other orchid, but not original post.) I would like to know what you see and would rather see. Nikon D200 and a Nikkor 18-200mm at f/18 and 1/4 sec, -3ev, IS0 100, 200mm. Converted from RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2, Manfrotto tripod, continuous dual lights on stands. / Choices

  • Toklat in his zen mode draped over the top stair, after a rough day hiking and playing. I named him Toklat, which is a river and glacier in the Denali National Park and Preserve, after doing some editing and layout work for the Denali park service. Toklat is a very sweet and uncomplicated dark-chocolate Retriever. He doesn’t chase moose. I hope he won’t chase bears. Taken for a challenge in the “Man’s Best Friend” group, and, well, because I can’t resist taking photos of our two Labs. Toklat placed in the top ten of the “Man’s Best Friend” challenge. You should see him when he gets excited (this isn’t the time). Toklat’s looks earned him a feature at “Man’s Best Friend” – Thank you! Nikon D200, Nikon 105mm VR lens. 105mm, f/5 , 1/100, ISO 100, -0.3ev. Converted from RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2, manual exposure. Unedited, no post-processing.

  • Fade to Grey, one day I will see what I truly am, for now i am a reflection, an almost perfect lie. I cannot see me, I can capture what is said to be but I will not be free. Self Portrait, Nikon D90 – 18-105mm featured in / 60’s Glory

  • Taller spruce trees shadow the aspen trees and this dead branch, creating a dark background for a pine siskin (finch). Featured in A Photographer’s Craft – an honor Featured in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams – an honor Nikon D200, Sigma 150-500mm, 500mm, f/6.3, 1/400sec, -0.3ev., ISO 200, manual exposure. • This photo has not been cross-processed properly, apparently. However, I’d never heard of cross-processing until recently. I’ve read that the term started by developing color print or slide film in the wrong chemicals – for example, color negative film in slide chemicals or slide film by the color negative process. This causes wild color and contrast shifts and requires lots of trial and error. for more, see Dana DiPasquale’s forum page. Apparently a group exists for cross-processing experts, as well. / / However, playing with the RGB channels certainly stretched my tendency for more realistic, staid photos! I played with this photo last night using Sue Wickham’s method and the tutorial that Mary Campbell posted. I used curves and RGB channels in Photoshop and Nikon’s Capture NX2.1 software. / / This is the Capture NX2 version, with a bit of a vignette blur from efex. Original: Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-300mm, 145mm, f/5.6, 1/1000sec, -0.3ev., ISO 200, manual exposure, / Converted from 12-bit RAW to jpeg. Manfrotto tripod. / 2025×3037px

  • Forest fires and heat throughout Alaska have obscured the Chugach range and limited opportunities to practice landscape photography. I learned much after posing the query, What makes a good landscape photo?, but must wait to work on better foregrounds. However, upon reflection, ahem, other photographic opportunities exist. Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-300mm VR, f/5.6, 1/250, -0.67 exposure compensation, 85mm focal length, ISO 100, 2-stop ND grad, Speedlight SB-800 with diffuser bounced off white wall, Manfrotto tripod. Oh, and a patient poppy plucked from the wilds of Alaska. (If that’s not too anthropomorphic for you.)

  • Let’s sit and talk awhile. / / Fireweed in Alaska. Nikon D200 and Nikkor 105mm, 105mm, at f/8 and 1/125 sec, -0.3ev, IS0 100. Converted from 12-bit RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2.1, manual exposure. Manfrotto tripod. Curves and other slight editing using Capture NX2.1

  • An abandoned pleasure craft up on blocks at St Marks, Florida … hunting around underneath the hull I found some wonderful art work. Nikon D90 with Nikon 60mm macro on tripod f/13 1/40s ISO 400. I see waves rolling in one behind the other, with the dawn sun catching the one about to break on the shore.

  • And one sneaky photographer. Captured while riding the New York Subway. Converted to HDR via ReDynaMix, than dodge & burnt and otherwise edited in CS3 and Digital Lightroom. Taken with Nikon D200 and Nikkor 24-120mm lens. This image is currently on display at the Walls Fine Art gallery in Downtown Norfolk, VA. /

  • 83 year old pilot conducting some pre-flight checks in the de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk, while his wingman ensures the radio is set properly. These are the types of shot I just wished I would take more of. I am beginning to see the value of the human aspect of photography. Taken with Nikon D200, Nikkor 24-120mm lens, post-processed with ReDynaMix for slight HDR effect, Dodge and Burnt in CS3, and final Digital Lightroom edits. Check out this slideshow I created from that day This image is currently on display at the Walls Fine Art gallery in Downtown Norfolk, VA.
