This panorama is a stitch of five images taken near Wai’ohuli Trail deep in the heart of Polipoli forest on Maui. Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / 13 December 2008 Polipoli is almost 10 miles upland from Kula on Waipoli Road off Kekaulike Avenue (Highway 377. 4 wheel drive 4×4 vehicle is recommended. Much of this forest was planted by my husband Jacob Mau, his beloved father and the state of Hawai’i forestry crew. They planted in the mid 1960’s the magnificent Redwoods, the Monterey Pine, Cluster Pine, Tsugi Pine, Evergreen Cypress, pockets of native Hawaiian Koa as well as others. The native Hawaiian Sandalwood is found here and protected from grazing animals which are in the area. Jacob’s father Jacob Ten Sung Mau was the field foreman for the state forestry crew at that time. Jacob states the road conditions were very bad in those days, requiring four wheel drive vehicles with tire chains to drive up into this area, which was not a state park at that time. The only time they could plant the seedlings was immediately after it had rained so that the trees would have a better chance of surviving on their own, having been started in rich damp earth. The seedlings were about 1 ft to 2 ft in height and had been shipped from a Kamuela nursery on the Big Island. Planting took place over a period of time about three months during winter weather in the Hawaiian Islands, which is the rain season. It breaks our hearts to see the devastation in this magnificent forest from the fire which occurred about two years ago, yet we are so grateful for the efforts of the many people who love this beautiful ‘aina and are working in replanting and harvesting the felled wood for use in many wonderful projects on the island. Many of the charred and blackened standing trees however are still alive and branching with renewed growth. It is so amazing to see an enormous Redwood tree, a giant sentry of the forest so majestic in it’s size and beauty, blackened and charred from the fire so deeply the bark appears as charcoal, now showing evidence of fresh green foliage and branching appearing from the leader and all along it’s trunk. It is a great mix of emotion I feel to see how deeply the tree was burned and to discover that it is sustained from deep within and the tree is still living! It is a wondrous testament to the endurance of nature and a celebration of life! There is an extensive reforestation program underway and many new seedlings are volunteering as well as the beautiful forest, which is one of Maui’s treasures renews and restores itself. Always when entering this area check the weather forecast. When it is raining the narrow volcanic dirt and gravel road along the steep grades and switchbacks become a soggy river of mud. The air is so sweet and we enjoy the many species of birds in this beautiful sanctuary. ~ Sharon Mau Camping and lodging (one cabin) within the fog belt of the Kula Forest Reserve at 6200 foot elevation. Extensive trail system in the forest reserve, including through a forest reminiscent of the conifer forests of the Pacific Northwest coast. Sweeping views of Central and West Maui, Kaho’olawe, Moloka’i and Lana’i in clear weather. Pig and seasonal bird hunting. Hikers should wear brightly coloured clothing – hunters may be in the area. Nights are generally cold; winter nights frequently have below freezing temperatures. Polipoli Park is in the Kula Forest Reserve on the western slopes of Haleakala beginning at the 6,000 foot elevation and rising to around 8,600 feet. Of the numerous trails within the reserve only Waiakoa Loop, Upper Waiakoa, Mamane and Skyline are open to mountain bikes. Conditions can range between hot, dry and dusty, and damp, wet and cold, all in the same day. On the slopes of Haleakala Crater at 6,200 feet is the Polipoli State Park recreational area. Bordering the Kula Forest Reserve, the 10 acre park is a protected bird sanctuary. The Hawaiian word “polipoli” translates to “bosom.” The forest is a delight of exotic trees, cypress, sugi, ash, plum, cedar and pine. The redwoods are quite impressive. They tower over the other trees, with a seemingly strong root system. Many of the trees have toppled, leaving large exposed root balls. There are signs posted that warn hikers of the dangers of falling trees. It is always a good idea when driving up to Polipoli to carry a chain saw. Two years ago there was a devastating forest fire on the slopes of Haleakala at the 6,000 foot level. Many trees were torched, and many dead trees are still standing. A reforestation effort is under way. The koa tree, ( an acaia) a Hawaii native that is listed as endangered, is now being planted on the slopes. Large boars roam these forests and hill sides, and tend to root around the newly planted koa trees.” Star Bulletin
“Mysterious Kor” came out of nowhere today…I started out planning to do a winter painting, then as this scene emerged, out of the blue the title came into my head…the strange thing is that I had never heard of or read the poem before in my life…when the name popped into my head I looked it up and found it was about a city where no one lived, and is an allegory about London during the blitz…when I read the first two lines, I saw that they echo the subject of the painting...
