I painted this a few years ago and still have the original four by three foot painting in my studio. / I have a wide range of musical appreciation and Trane along with Miles Davis continue to inspire me in life and in art. I can make the print available if anyones interested. / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - / / – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – / John Coltrane is sometimes described as one of jazz’s most influential musicians, but one is hard put to find followers who actually play in his style. Rather, he is influential by example, inspiring musicians to experiment, take chances, and devote themselves to their craft. The controversy about his work has never died down, but partially as a result, his name lives on and his recordings continue to remain available and to be reissued frequently. / - / His album BLUE TRAIN is certainly deserving of being hailed as a “classic,” a term grossly overused these days. Imagination or creativity doesn’t always come in the form of extreme busyness, and if you give this album your full attention, it will offer riches galore. / There is good reason why BLUE TRAIN is listed on many a jazz educator’s essential recordings list: It IS essential.

by shanmcleanThis was an interpretation of the lyrics to the 1920’s Louis Armstrong song, Black and Blue. Essentially it is about racism and division. The little girl is looking at what she will probably never obtain. / It is a mixture of watercolour, ink, pen and collage.

This is a remarkable still life on a number of levels; the composition of saxophone, trumpet and paint palette, the lighting from a blue neon sign (reflected in the sax) and the setting sun (window reflection on trumpet bell) and the mastery of that color and light. This Paul Jackson watercolor is one of a series by the artist featuring musical instruments. “Jazz in Blues” won best of show at the Keystone Nation Watercolor Exhibition 2008
