(apologies for the re-posting, I was told by RB to make this a journal entry rather than a “writing” entry – please re-favorite this entry instead) Calling all Groupies… I’ve recently been preparing a number of RB utilities to make my life easier, which I will share with all of you to use. This is a utility for displaying each of your art works, with a list of which groups it has been submitted to. All on a single page. Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with RB, don’t go blaming them if it goes wrong. This is just me, making my life easier and sharing it out :-) Comments, suggestions, criticism all welcome! :-) My Art in Groups: / http://ccgi.parapadakis.plus.com/rb/RBartgroups.php By default, it displays the latest 20 pieces of art, but you can change that number up or down on the login screen. Use 999 to get everything. WARNINGS / 1) This utility will take a while to run. It has a lot to do to collect that info. Be patient! / 2) The utility does not store passwords, but it doesn’t use encryption either. If your RB password is the same as your bank account’s – Change it! / 3) Don’t get confused by the checkboxes next to the groups name, they don’t actually do anything! I hope you find it useful. Bookmark this post and come back whenever you want a summary of which groups your art has been posted in. / Regards, George Last updated: 31 October 2008

Just in case others are (like me) ignorant of the easy way of things, here’s how to feature and unfeature work the easy way. Just replace ‘geelong-throng’ with name of your group, then use the URL http://www.redbubble.com/groups/geelong-throng/featured_works/ and you can see all the featured works for the group with UNFEATURE under each. To feature something in the group, rather than finding it in the groups list of artwork, just add the image identification to the above url. In other words, if I wanted to feature this item in the Geelong-Throng group : http://www.redbubble.com/people/jaredrevell/art/2747358-2-ominous Then I use the url http://www.redbubble.com/groups/geelong-throng/featured_works/ and add 2747358-2-ominous to it giving: http://www.redbubble.com/groups/geelong-throng/featured_works/2747358-2-ominous Then select FEATURE under the image. I wish someone had told me about this – I just worked it out LOL. Lightsmith.

We previously talked about how RedBubble Groups bond artists by subject matter, and how they are also powerful search silos (marketers call them verticals) that can direct shoppers to targeted subjects on RedBubble. Say you’re shopping for abstract art. RedBubble has a beautiful collection of abstract art in Groups. The abstract art group is flush with relevant text, fresh with a diverse art collection, and gets lots of Google love because of third-parties (you and me) link into the Group page. Here’s a free and easy way to help the last point – for any group. Group Hosts can enable a widget that shows Featured Work in a small and attractive slideshow. This widget can be added to personal websites, and as Denis Leary says, “bliggity blogs, facey spaceys and tweetie pages.” This Groups widget features the same format as the personal artwork widget that many members already use; found in the promote area of MyBubble. The opportunity for search engines to home in on a Group page is bettered when there are many links into that page from content rich websites, blogs, social media pages, etc. Why? Google’s magical black box of calculations factors links into a page as part of a website’s Quality Score, i.e., how well the search term matches the page content. If every member posted a link to their Group(s) on their blog using the Group subject as the link, e.g., Abstract art prints, calendars and greeting cards, along with the widget, there would likely be a measurable effect on Group page visitors via natural (organic and unpaid) search results – which is good for everyone in the group. The result is compounded when those links come from sites that already have a good PageRank on Google. Are you still asking why you should promote your Group in addition to your own work? The simple answer is that the collective power of Group referrals helps direct visitors (shoppers) that might otherwise never see your art. Simply put, a better Google Quality Score equals more search engine exposure, and more exposure is good. All of us are pursuing art for different reasons, but most of us want exposure, validation, mind-share, and sales. And in a collective, creative space like RedBubble, good karma, back scratching, collaboration, and referrals go a long way. To allow Group members to use the widget, Hosts need to go to the “Settings” area of their Group and tick the box next to the “Show promote tab?” text. Here are images of the Promote widget and the tick box. / Promote widget / Activate the Promote widget Final note: Hosts control the widget at this time; there is a simple on/off function. In the far future we’ll look to give members control of whether or not to have their work included in the widget. We researched this option after receiving feedback, but it’s a bridge too far at the moment. Thanks! Regards, / Jason

FRANS LIST: ART Talent and personalities scream at Red Bubble. Art and artists that I’ve met here are nothing, if not exciting, inspiring, and shall I say it?: addictive. Thus, my spiritual mission, it seems, has caught up with me. Starting this month, I will feature artists in this space, weekly. The feature will include an interview, pictures, maybe video or audio links; if we’re lucky, an exclusive; and always art. It will give you a bright, new perspective on an artist of RB; one whom I believe is brilliant. Look for the title: “Frans List: Art”, plus a volume number (added for title uniqueness), in your watch list. NEW SOLO EXHIBIT GROUP / On a separate, but related note, while I have your attention: I plan to start a new “Solo Exhibit” group that features a single artist’s works across the feature board for a span of time. A solo exhibit, right here at Red Bubble. For instance, if you were the featured artist, your works would be the only ones shown on the feature board that (week or n-days). All media and styles will be encouraged. I’m looking for co-hosts, now. In case you’re wondering, co-hosting will not exclude you from exhibiting, or from being solo’d. It’s all good. Comment me here, and/or bubblemail me with your interest. :D

Healing Through Art will periodically provide an idea that you can use in your own healing journey through art. I don’t know at this point how many there will be, I guess I’ll just go with the flow and offer them as I feel led. This is the first one and it is very simple just to get us started. Choose a sketchbook that is right for whatever mediums you want to use (I’m sure no one out there owns a sketchbook). Each time you sit down to make an image in your visual journal, ask yourself, “How do I feel today?” You can just draw simple shapes and colors if you want to represent how you feel right now. Or you can draw something more complex, the journal is yours to express your emotions however you desire. You can also use any medium you desire. The purpose is to express your feelings today or in this moment. When you feel finished, put a date on it and give it a title, then write something about it on the backside of the page or on another piece of paper. Once you have done this for a few weeks, look at your drawings by date and look for similar images, symbols, colors, and content. What are the regularly occurring emotions and how do you portray them? You will discover your own unique “visual vocabulary” for expressing your emotions. One other thing you can do with this as you look back over your sketchbook pieces is see if there is anything you want to change or add. Sometimes you will have new insights or emotions that you want to add to a journal. Remember, it is yours to do with whatever you desire. Happy visual journaling : ) Lynn Moore Adapted from The Art Therapy Sourcebook by Cathy Malchiodi

I helped hang the first Sydney exhibition I`m part in and in going through all the steps involved I thought I share the things I learned to help others who are doing their first baby steps in that direction like I`m doing right now. So the exhibition that we hung is on display right now at the TAP Gallery Sydney. More information is here. The opening night is this Wednesday (Sept 2nd) and we were busy setting everything up last weekend. (All credits go by the way to Andrew May who is a busy angel in organising all those wonderful things.) Whether you’re exhibiting your own artwork or someone else’s, setting up an art exhibition can be a creative, fulfilling endeavor in and of itself. However, it does have its challenges and you’ll need good planning to pull it off: 1. Choose a theme. The theme is what will tie all of the artwork together and determine the title of the exhibition. The exhibition I`m part of right now is called “Inter-Medium” due to the different media that is presented. It`s a very simple title but a very effective one I believe. The planning for this one started well over 6 weeks ago. / / 2. Select a date. Give yourself plenty of time to pull everything together or else you might end up with a sloppy job and poor sales. It is always best to hold an art exhibition so that it includes a weekend. This will allow those working during weekdays to attend and often families will make an outing of the event. 3. Find artists with work to exhibit. Well, where better to start searching for fellow artist then here? If you have chosen a narrow theme, they might bring along existing artwork or they may have to paint or create new artworks. Consider more than just paintings – sculptures, models, artistic photos and glass works are just some other possible ideas that can be blended well with painted artwork or stand alone. The “Inter-Medium” show consists of paintings, photographs, pottery, sculptures and mixed media. And by the way – it looks great together, don`t you think? Even with some pieces (on the table) not hang yet… 4. Determine the location of your exhibition. You can rent a large hall, but many different kinds of spaces will do (such as a library or even someone’s home for example). Laminated flooring and white or pale walls with no pattern will look the best. Consider how many art pieces will be needed to fill the space and compare that with your estimate of what you will be exhibiting. Pay particular attention to available lighting. Large windows can be good, and track lighting can be especially useful in illuminating the work. 5. Presentation is the key. Think about it: would you buy your work the way you present it? Frame the artwork (if applicable). People are more likely to buy artwork that has been carefully and tastefully framed, rather than just simply mounted. But, framing requires a deeper investment on your part—one that you need to be confident will pay off. For example I have 5 of my best photos in this exhibition, this is a framed 12×8” print of my Inside a shell photo. / 6. Set your prices. Consider all of your costs, including the fee for renting the space, the framing, advertising, the artist’s share, your share, and any costs related to hosting the event like wine or snacks. Decide whether an admission fee will be necessary or appropriate. 7. Advertise the art exhibition. Make invitations and posters displaying the same theme as the paintings, sculptures and other artwork. Include the exhibition title, location, date, time, and admission fee. Put a poster up on supermarket bulletin boards. Get in touch with local newspapers and tell them about the upcoming exhibition. Advertise at local art schools and universities. Register your event with local event websites or planers. This is a small thumbnail of the invite that was produced and distributed. Click on it and you will see it larger. / 8. Set up the exhibition space. Transport the artwork carefully. Remember that stacking heavy, framed pieces can result in shattered glass. Arrange the artwork in the space using your own judgment. Try to develop a flow, and imagine how a visitor will see the room upon entering. Which piece will they see first? Consider adding descriptions to any or all of the pieces. Always make the prices clearly visible. Ensure that artwork is hanging properly, roped off (if needed) and that signs are provided telling people not to touch (again, if needed). Or conversely, if people are allowed to touch something, let them know! Most important thing is: get friends and fellow exhibitors to help you set it up – otherwise it can be a long night of work. That`s me and Nahomi Yoshizawa – Smile! / 9. Entertain with food and drink at the opening night. If you can afford it, offer beverages such as champagne, wine and non-alcoholic choices, along with finger food or a buffet. Provide a pleasant background atmosphere. Play good music (classical or soft electronic) at a low level, especially at the end when people start leaving. 10. And last but not least: Be sales savvy. In addition to selling the artwork, it can also be profitable to print cards with photos of the paintings or other artworks and sell in packs of five or so. If a percentage (or all) of the proceeds go to charity, there’s a better chance people will come and buy the artwork. That´s pretty much it. Sounds easy-peasy? Get started everyone! Happy exhibiting!

I spent most of last night (until 4 am) trawling through ALL the groups looking for ones to join and ended up joining about 20 I think. Anyway, it took a while but was an interesting experience, especially seeing how some mods both phrase and justify their ‘rules’. One particular group, (which shall go nameless, simply because I can’t remember it, for reasons which will become abundantly clear shortly …but they will know who they are)....got my dander up when I read something in the ‘rules’ along the lines of : / ‘Digital art will be rejected and no explanation given’. / Is this just me, or does that sound a tad ‘confrontational’, not to say ‘elitist’??? Anyway, needless to say, I didn’t see much point in even attempting to join, seeing as I am now a ‘digital’ artist. Please note the word ‘Now’. For the majority of the time I have been painting and drawing to make a living (over 30 years), I used paint, paper, ink, pencil, airbrush, collage, montage, frottage etc etc etc and it was only relatively recently that I went digital for a number of reasons, some economic, some health / (eyesight) related. I reckon I can legitimately call myself a ‘painter’ if I so choose. / But, using that person’s criteria, it seems I am not one any more. All of a sudden I’m not, just because I switched tools. A carpenter suddenly wants to use a spanner so he’s no longer a carpenter but a plumber or an mechanic…Okay. I get the picture… Check this. 99% of people who make such sweeping assumptions have NEVER seen a digital artist at work, and just assume it’s all prompts, commands and mouse clicks. You just press a few keys and Voila! I picture appears!!! I had this very problem, years ago, convincing the WWF that I was NOT going to be simply manipulating their ref photos, but still painting the art, but just using light, instead of paint. When they saw the first piece I did for them, they immediately changed their POV. / Simply put, the end justified the means. 20+ years ago, when computers were much less powerful than they are now, and graphics tablets didn’t even exist, you still had to know how to paint and draw to create anything that looked remotely like ART no a circuitboard diagram, and it still applies now despite the amazing advances in hardware and software. Sure, you can use a bunch of presets and filters and know little about color theory and come up with something that looks okay, but if you can draw and paint already, it’s just another way of working and the end result will show the difference. I use EXACTLY the same techniques and skills with my stylus and tablet as I did / (and sometimes still do) with a brush and canvas or pencil and paper. I can still do it like that. I just choose not to for reasons already explained. It’s about time people with that attitude realised that digital art is every bit as valid as using traditional media. I know. I have used both extensively and so am in a position to judge. I doubt if that person can say the same, apart from maybe a brief foray into Photoshop to tweak some photos. Not the same thing. The obvious ‘repost’ will no doubt be: ‘There are already many groups for digital art’. Yeah? so what? There are also many that cater for both. There are also many that include photography as well. / IT IS ALL ART. I don’t think I came across ONE digital art group, or any other kind for that matter, that announced ‘Traditional painting will be rejected and no explanation given’. Please correct me if I’m wrong. This notion that trad media is somehow ‘superior’ and more valid than digital is an attitude which belongs in the 80’s and beyond. It’s as out of date and erroneous as the idea that abstract painting or even expressionsim, isn’t ’ real art’ either. So, that’s my 10c worth. Apologies for ‘shouting’ but this attitude really gets up my nose and it’s one that doesn’t belong on RB. / It’s CREATIVITY that counts. An orchestra makes beautiful music. / And finally, if the person who made that comment wants to challenge me and justify their position, that’s cool , but it won’t prove them right. / d’O
