A lone diner at an exclusive restaurant, captured on New York’s Central Park South. Most know of Pakistan as a third world fanatical Muslim country full of terrorists. I have lived in Pakistan, my parents were born and raised there and though it has its many faults it also has its many beauties, its many treasures and many things that I love and cherish. At Work is a picture of my maid, Sakina in her small and modest home where I captured her hands as she used two rocks to grind herbs and spices to make that nights meal. This is a method still used in homes where a mechanical grinder is a luxury and not a necessity. According to Sakina and her mother, herbs ground on a rock maintain the rich flavors that are often lost by all our machines.

The traditional classic chinese word “ai” (love) consist of the word “xing” (heart) at its core. “Ai Xing” in mandarin means “loving heart”. I have simply highlighted the core word “xing” in red to show the meaning of loving heart. “While some simplified characters were adopted from conventional abbreviated forms that have existed for a long time, the vast majority of the changes made by PRC were “unnatural” such as the removal of the symbol for heart (心) from the word love (愛) into the new character (爱).” (Wikipedia) This word is hand-written by me (using a wacom pen & tablet). This Picture is no longer available as a card, because the writing get cut off. / But I now also have the same picture with white border added available as a card. / Grandma’s Coffee Cookies (recipe) w/ white border / Grandma’s Coffee Cookies / / 2 cups brown sugar / 1 cup butter / 1 cup cold leftover coffee / 1 egg / 3 cups flour / 1 tsp. baking soda / 1 tsp. baking powder / 1 tsp. cinnamon / ¾ tsp. nutmeg / 1 cup raisins, blanched (pour boiling water over raisins and let sit for 5 minutes, then drain) / 1 cup walnuts Mix brown sugar and butter together; blend in cold coffee. Beat in egg. Mix dry ingredients together and add to butter mixture. Stir in raisins and walnuts. Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees F for 12-14 minutes A beautiful, soft drop cookie. / Freeze well. Late October…it had been a cold summer and we hardly hoped for any fruit, but the old stone wall had been kind as in years past, keeping the warmth of the sun in it’s bones, so that the pears grew fat and juicy, hanging so low, we had to tie them to prevent them from falling…then suddenly it was winter and we ran to gather them in…visons of pear jams, compotes and chutneys urged us to hurry before a frost set in…they felt good in the hand, plump and juicy….stored in the root cellar, they will take us through to spring...excerpt…The Old Pear Tree..Janis Zroback Watercolour on Arches Not Paper / Pears and Lace
