  • Mixed media illustration using photographs of upraised hands and a seagull in flight.

  • Lately I’ve felt as though I needed another set of hands to accomplish everything that needed doing. I guess this would be one way that may help me.

  • I drew this with pencil on a piece of paper in my sketchbook. I referred to a photo of my mother as a 10 years old, and somehow it ended up looking more like me. Many people mistake this to be my self-portrait. It’s funny that it turned out this way. Many people tell me I resemble my mother, and I don’t see that so much. Even as I was looking at my mother’s past photo, I wasn’t thinking that she looked like me, but in the end I see a portrait which looks like me. I drew this during my summer after grade 11 (age 17). At the time my mother was in Japan and I was missing her. Some photo reference of my mother and I. Do we look alike? This work has been featured in: / Pencil Drawing

  • Salted wounds wrap around the wrists of gentle peasants who cling to life as a farmer does to seed. / The white sun bleaches desert sand under bare feet and forces them to lay down crutches and crawl. / Water would once again appear, as in a dream, and then dry before their eyes… before blistered lids… before chalky tongues could plead for more… one drop more. / Yet, it was quite enough anyway. Every drop was the sea. Every mouthful a flood. Every molecule an eternity. acrylic on canvas

  • Starting to rain. Or is is the drip drip drip of weeping for tomorrow’s imagined loss. I slip, trip and fall to the sand. I stare at the corner and study its green moldy walls. The dim light grows bright and I see the pattern of jasmine scented light fall over tides of sequin sparkling songs of laughter that drizzle over shadows. And what are shadows anyway. I strain to see what color they are. As if it were not enough to try and perceive the infinity of tints that fills the light. Always searching for more. I turn from the corner. And it wasn’t a corner at all. It was an opening. Hidden doorways are reflected in the mirror of desire. And I realize that is what shadows are. Doorways. And corners, just an illusion. Corner is acrylic on paper 15”x20”

  • While you were away a mist drifted in. I didn’t notice all at once. It was a slow silver around the edges of the room. That was all. I did the usual things and thought of what you were doing, somewhere else, with others, or alone. Then the white fog developed around my bare feet. While I slept it became denser. Almost liquid. Blocking light. Then I realized I couldn’t see you anymore. Which was odd, because you weren’t there anyway. I walked out into the park and climbed the hill to see if I could catch one more glimpse of you. When I reached the top there was no fog. But the sun was too bright to really see. So I walked back home. See only a memory. While You Were Away is acrylic on card stock paper, coated on one side and is 15”x20”

  • The surface was eroded in places where he leaned his hand. He brushed away the dust when he rubbed his palm across his eyebrow, pretending to brush at wiry black hairs. Then his fingers dripped across the ridge of his nose and quickly flicked under his eye. The hands that shook on the steering wheel were not rough, not muscular, yet strong. Farm hand genes. Or maybe a youth that was rougher than was obvious from the business suit and tie that was always worn. Or was that just the way I remember it? / “Brain cancer,” he said. / “Does that mean she’s going to die?” A child’s questions are more truthful than an adults. They don’t know yet about not mentioning certain things out loud. / His response was mumbled and unclear. But I saw tears in his eyes. And it frightened me. I don’t know why. Maybe it was that Daddy was suppose to be always in control, in charge and that meant the world would never fall apart. It was as if God lost control. How unfair I was. To not want him to be a person with emotions. But I was just a child. I didn’t know he was just a man. Weak and afraid. Sometimes. But also courageous and noble and fearless. “Beginning to Bread Away” is 24”x30” acrylic, ink, and gesso on stretched canvas.
