Several months ago I was commissioned to do another cover for Conscious Living magazine here in Australia. The theme was to focus on “wild” and in particular….HORSES! / My first thoughts turned to a good friend and talented photographer here on Redbubble – Gene Praag who regularly captures amazing images of the wild horses in his home state of Utah. / And so I asked this fellow bubbler would he be able to help me with REAL wild horse images to work with, as opposed to me taking shots of local domestic horses and pretending they were “wild”. / From this collaboration I generated several pieces of art, and had loads of fun, and I have to say, both Gene and I were surprised at the magazine’s final choice of one of the less artistic images for their cover this issue….. (and yes, before anyone comments, I reckon Equus is spelled differently…lol) so I decided to share with you, one of the other images created from our joint efforts. SO thank you most sincerely to Gene for his generosity and kindness and for being so helpful in this project…... if you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to check out his amazing portfolio of images featuring the wild horses of the USA captured in their natural habitat, and being …... wild and free….. along with many other beautiful landscapes and subjects….. They are the most awesome animals I’ve ever had the pleasure of being around. :) This work has been FEATURED in the “Dimensions” group, in “The Dreaming Tree” group AND in the “Painted Nature” group! :) This art work placed in the TOP TEN of the “Dawn of Time” Challenge in the “Gateways” group!

A beautiful Friesian stallion and his lovely owner Stefanie Maas of Cave Creek, Arizona. We designed the costume and her mother-in-law did all the sewing. I wanted to create a Medieval look that is so fitting for this breed. Shot in raw with my Canon Rebel XT in late afternoon light. Converted in CS3 and gave it a softness for a dreamy feel.

Originally impressionism was that the colour should be dropped pure on the canvas rather than mixed on the palette. Today, now that we have so many new paints and mediums to work with, while the original concept of impressionism remains the same, styles and techniques have evolved. / My style of Impressionism embraces traditional painting. It is the evolution of impressionism that i am hoping to achieve, from the original traditional techniques of impressionist painting all the way to this modern impressionist digital art which can be stylized and painterly depending on my subject and mood. Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software. Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the digital painting directly on the computer. / I create the painting, directly on my PC, by using a Wacom tablet, a stylus pen and ArtRage painting software. The Wacom tablet can be compared to a canvas or watercolor paper surface. The stylus pen is my paintbrush.

This is a composite. The horse is a shot I took, with my Canon Rebel XT, of a Friesian stallion named Leo, owned by Stefanie Maas of Cave Creek, Arizona. The texture background is by dknucklesstock. I added more textures with brushes in PS, over the horse and in various places, using layers, to integrate the horse into the setting better and to give it a aged, grungy look.
