Four days ago I received a scam email. This guy wanted to buy two pieces of my work. I almost fell for this type of thing about 2 years ago so I wrote him back. I was just playing along with this guy. I ask him which two pieces of my work he wanted to buy. He wrote me back and said he had a client that wanted to buy some artwork for his new home in Nigeria or somewhere. So I wrote him back and I told him that I do landscapes and portraits. Take your pick!. He wrote me back and said he wanted a landscape and a portrait and to go ahead and paint them. OK, a portrait of what? does this guy want a portrait of my cat? Or maybe a portrait of my sons pet lizard. So I wrote him back again and ask him to be more specific about what he wants me to paint. So he just said it doesn’t matter, Just a portrait and a landscape. He also gave me instructions on how to handle the big money for the paintings exchange. He was to send me a cashiers check for a big big sum of money and I was to cash it , take my part and give the rest to his special shipping agent who was to come to my home and pick up the goods. He ask me to write him back with a price for the landscape and the portrait of of my sons pet lizard. So I wrote him back with a price. / I told him my landscapes start at $40,000.00 and my portraits start at $60,000.00 (Yeah, in my dreams) and I only except pay pal and I only ship through UPS. I’m still waiting but he hasn’t replied back yet. If anybody is reading this don’t fall for one of these scams like I almost did 2 years ago. The cashiers checks are stolen and you get stuck with paying back the money.

I believe the journey of the artist … / A RedBubble Journal Entry by C.C. Arshagra I believe the journey of the artist, or the journey of life and soul’s becoming is as honest as each moment admits the whole truth of all you do and do not know with bliss. It is not the pain of failures seen in self or others. It is every moment of ” ... aaah” (Not, oh-me oh-my). So to here accept the gift is now I see who I was. And now I see who I may be. These fallings (And not pain or failures—so to speak) are lessons. Soul lessons that will mold the constant choices you are and will be. And this may be all that is true. True through all you do, think, feel, say and create. I honestly feel this to be each living beings living karma. It is the listening you give to life is within you are receiving it. And it is within the creating of you are now life’s giving in return. And this true are you to all life from this instant to every next one. I believe this is to understand and live here. These falling moments are as important as success, if not more so. I believe they happen more and not less as time goes onward toward becoming the soul understanding of self. To become you are peace of mind here. Now residing presently within the core of your intelligent emotional soul being. I believe those who live to soul control others, keep and own greed, and lie to wield all painful kingdoms of sorrow are children. And all they destroy in their wake will be their becoming death’s wait for they truly do not know what they’re not. The frequency of these fallings may increase and not decrease in this same change of time to time. This may continue so until the frequency is constant. Until your soul and art form of living is constantly here and true throughout your time, And through all the art you lived to create when this life of being form ends. I believe the journey of the artist, or the journey of life and soul’s becoming is honesty, patience, humility, and all that it means to parent life, feel joy, and laugh no matter how silently you do. And oh to understand the moving of alive that transpires when a tear becomes a happy one. Falling. C.C. At the end of 2007 I had mentioned that I would be exploring art materials that are earth-friendly. This is no small feat, as many artist materials are notoriously hazardous. It’s bad enough that materials are expensive! At any rate, I think it is my responsibility, not just for my own health, but for the good of everyone to explore earth-friendly options. I have been contacting my suppliers of art materials and exploring their “greenness”. The first company I heard back from was Ampersand Art Supply (www.ampersandart.com) who produces the watercolor boards I use. Here is the letter that they sent to me: Thanks so much for contacting us about our products. As we continue to grow this company, we are always looking for new environmentally sound alternatives to the materials we currently use as new information is made available. We use the most advanced and safe technology available in the world of wood painting panels today. The hardboard we use is made from renewable wood, meaning that the trees processed into the wood fibers are harvested and replaced with new ones. Also, these Aspen fir trees, that have a lower acid content than any other tree, are grown in the US, so that we are not affecting the growing problem of shrinking rain forests around the world. The wood fibers we use are made from waste from the lumbar industry, so in a way, you could say they are already made from recycled materials. [I had asked if they use recyled materials in any of their products] Also, our wood products do not contain any chemicals (VOC) that emit harmful gases that can cause cancer like formaldehyde or any others that can contribute to global warming like methane. We use only safe water soluble raw materials in our coatings instead of solvent based materials which prevents problems locally (Austin, TX) with soil, groundwater and any other run off problems that could potentially happen with unsafe materials. The clay we use is a raw material that is mined only in the US from a more than abundant virtually endless supply (for the small world of art materials) – its not processed in a way that will affect the environment negatively. It’s kaolin clay (naturally acid free and neutral pH), no color or hazardous chemicals added. As we move toward the future, we are always testing materials that are safe for artists, will last according to museum standards and that have the least amount of impact on the environment. It could be that the wood materials we use will be replaced with a recycled product more along the lines of recycled plastic or metal – we’re still looking into this and are always open to new ideas that we can test. I was pleased with the response I received, and glad to know that the company that produces a product that I really enjoy using is conscious of minimizing their environmental impact. I am still waiting to hear back from Fredrix the company that produces the canvas I use, as well as the ink and watercolor makers. I will update you when I hear back from them. But, you can be certain, in the meantime, more of my work will be made utilizing Ampersands clayboards!

As part of my on going exploration of earth friendly art materials, I looked into Golden Artist Colors. I use Golden products for my acrylic paintings, including paints and mediums, as well as for varnishing all my pieces. I like the quality and consistency of their products. But, with my new mission, whether I like a product or not isn’t enough of a factor to keep me using the product. The company has to offer more. I went to the Golden website and found an extensive section on social responsibility . That section describes such “green” initiatives as the Seconds Program, explained on the site: GOLDEN has an overall “green” attitude; everything that we are striving for as far as our formulations are concerned is geared toward environmental friendliness. This includes the ingredients that go in our paints, the wastewater we generate making our paints as well as cleaning out equipment, and any waste we may generate in between or after that process goes to good use in our Seconds Program. The Seconds Program is a way for GOLDEN to support artists and keep product out of the waste stream. Employees, along with local and artist communities, are offered products from the “Seconds Program.” The Seconds Program offers paint that does not meet GOLDEN standards at little or no cost to artists or non-profit organizations that can greatly benefit from the program. Golden produces a newsletter titled “Just Paint”, and in issue #18, there is an article that explains the company’s new water reclamation process. Water is a necessary component not only for the artist to use paint, but also in the manufacturing of paint. Golden has installed a Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtering system that reuses over two-thirds of the water used to clean production equipment. They also utilize RO in a wastewater treatment process that filters out the solids of acrylic, pigments and other materials from the water. That water is then sent to a city treatment plant where the remaining chemicals are removed. Please see the newsletter for the complete explanation of the RO process. Additionally, the website has extensive instructions for artists about how to reduce waste of materials and how to dispose of waste materials in an environmentally sound way. To fellow artists, please do check this section out. Even if you don’t use Golden materials, many of the suggestions are applicable to other mediums. I use some of the cleaning techniques recommended by Golden in my studio, but will begin practicing even more waste-reducing techniques. I wrote to the company inquiring about the possibility of Golden producing a line of colored inks. I received a prompt and friendly reply indicating that their line of Airbrush Colors are essentially inks. I was sent a packet of informational materials on Golden products, newsletters and hand painted color swatches of many of their paints. I have since purchased some samples of the Airbrush colors and will experiment with them to see how they work in comparison to the inks I currently use. Because of Golden’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility, I am happy to continue to include their products to produce my art work. I am still waiting to hear back from other companies I have been using, if I don’t hear back in another week, I will send out one more inquiry. If I do not receive a response after the second inquiry, I will write a letter explaining that I will no longer use their products until I have heard from them regarding their environmental policies. I will keep you updated! DoAn

Winsor & Newton produces the tube watercolors, brushes, and watercolor mediums that I use. I am happy to report that I will continue to be using their products, as they have very strong environmental policies in place. Here is what I found on their website: Manufactering: / We are holders of the manufacturing environmental British Standard 14001. This is an international standard and certification for environmental systems and we are committed to achieving the targets which allows us to keep it. / We have achieved significant improvement in reducing waste (reduction at source, alternatives to landfill and by recycling.) / Our factory machinery is monitored for energy usage and has been upgraded to improve efficiency. / We have reduced the amount of water usage in our factory and have invested in an improved effluent treatment plant. This has enabled us to recover 30% of water resulting in a saving of 1.2 million litres of water per year. / Our packaging recycling facility enables us to reduce landfill disposal by 180-220 tonnes per year. / Our office’s new individual heating and cooling system has greatly reduced our energy consumption. / Our cadmium levels in our waste is dropping by about 80-90% year on year which is a clear reduction in our hazardous waste. This is due to improved processing, not a reduction in the use of cadmiums. / Natural Resources: / Our policy is to use suppliers who can source FSC wood for all our brush handles, easels and canvas stretchers. / Where this isn’t possible, for technical or quality reasons, we ensure that our suppliers prove that the wood they are using is legally sourced and harvested. / We also ensure that we work with suppliers who have the same level of commitment to environmental issues. / All our natural hair products are obtained from sustainable sources and are by-products of other industries. Animals are not sourced for the sole use of our brush-making. Employees: / Winsor & Newton is an equal opportunities employer and provides a safe and healthy environment for all its employees. / We are all committed to reducing our impact on the environment through numerous office policies including recycling policies and water and energy reduction policies, which focus on how we use paper, lighting, temperature control and electrical appliances. / We give our employees the opportunity to reduce their environmental impact by providing a government-backed policy to save tax by cycling to work along with a company car policy that reduces emissions. In addition, Winsor & Newton provides tips to artists on how they can reduce their own environmental impact. Since I may not be able to use the Dr. PH Martin’s Hydras Watercolors due to their lack of response to my inquiries, I may begin using Winsor & Newton tube colors more often. Please visit their website at Winsor-Newton to see all the great products they make and to learn more about their environmental policies. DoAn

My latest work is a combo of Photoshop and Illustrator with sections of the piece such as the readouts pics and designs done with Illustrator. The rest including the blur and zoom effect as well as converting the backdrop to an image was with Photoshop. I love wide aspect ratio work as it looks more cinema quality so I think I might do a couple more works in that format than expand to dual format, landscape and portrait works. Just to note my other piece featuring the car was replaced with the newest piece ‘UFO Incoming’. Id like to do more space pieces in the future so that is definitely on my list to do more pieces towards that theme. Id appreciate any comments on my artworks as Id be very appreciative of the feedback. There are some extra pieces at my website which are framed and in a4 format if you would like to peruse them at your own time. The site is: www.mydigitalage.com / My Facebook is: White Cosmos then just go ‘add’ if you like. Mr Digital
