During World War II, 1,200 Trakehners, out of 25,000 registered in the East Prussian studbook, were trekked 900 miles across Europe to prevent them from falling into Soviet hands. Using this nucleus, German breeders have been able to preserve the breed. / It originated in the 13th century studs of the Teutonic Knights, in what used to be East Prussia. They used indigenous Schweiken ponies, descendants of the Tarpan, as a base. The Royal Trakehner Stud was founded by Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia in 1732, and aimed to produce active coach horses. Although no longer well-known outside its native country, it is one of the most important heavy horse breeds, and has a strong following in the USA. / The breed is very old and is thought to descend directly from the Forest or Diluvial horse. The foundations were first laid by Count Johan von Oldenburg in the late 16th century. He bred Friesian mares with Danish, Turkish, Neopolitan, and Andalusian stallions to produce large war horses. His son, Count Anton, travelled Europe and brought home the finest Spanish and Italian stallions, to add speed and strength. His tenant farmers were also allowed to breed from his stallions, establishing the tradition of small, private studs that is still common with the breeders in that region today. In the 17th century, the Oldenburg became a well-known coach horse, admired for its height, power, and elegance. It was also used as a riding horse. In the 18th century, Thoroughbred blood was added to refine the breed. In 1820, it became illegal to use any but a government-approved stallion for breeding, but it wasn’t until1861, that the Oldenburg stud book was established. In 1897, Oldenburg breeders brought Thoroughbreds, Cleveland Bays, Yorkshire Coach Horses, Normans, and some Hanoverians to further improve the breed. In the earlier part of the 20th century, the Oldenburg was still being used as a high-stepping coach horse, as well as on farms. But as machinery replaced horse power, the stud owners decided to breed for an all-around riding horse. In the 1950s, the Thoroughbred Lupus and the Anglo-Norman Condor founded a new Oldenburg stallion line, which produced heavy but elegant mares. From that point, only the finest of European livestock have contributed to the breed. Thoroughbreds were used first to refine the Oldenburg, then Trakehners, Anglo-Normans, Anglo-Arabians, Selle Francais, Hanoverians, and Westphalians. The resulting horse is an excellent sport horse that is more refined than its predecessors. (information from Wikipedia) Complete 2006
9×12 watercolor enhanced colored pencil. / The black Friesian is a coldblood horse of ancient origin. In its own land it arouses much the same admiration, and even adulation, as that given to the massive Shire horse in Britain. Although it is ridden and displays great agility under saddle, the modern Friesian excels as an impressive, free-moving harness horse. It’s temperament and appearance made it popular with circus trainers, and its presence and color ensure a market for it in the funeral business. / The Friesian, which descends from the “primitive” Forest Horse of Euopre, is bred principally in Friesland on the northern Netherlands coast. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about one million wild horses in the western United States. By 1970, the herds were devastated when they were hunted to provide grazing land for cattle and sheep ranchers. Goat. Photo based illustration. “The scapegoat was a goat that was driven off into the wilderness as part of the ceremonies of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in Judaism during the times of the Temple in Jerusalem. The rite is described in Leviticus 16. / The word is more widely used as a metaphor, referring to someone who is blamed for misfortunes, generally as a way of distracting attention from the real causes.” (quoted anonymous)
Spent a happy 2 hours reshooting and having fun with smoke art. / Reshoot as I’d lost 2 shoots when my disk went “boom!” some time back – this was one of them. Been meaning to get this done – just that it gets really stuffy with joss sticks!

ACEO / miniature art of a beautiful Tabby called Neska, with amber eyes, done with coloured pencils and ink on drafting film. Neska’s eyes are actually green in colour but I wanted to add to my series of artwork featuring cat’s eyes ( Emerald Eyes, Sapphire Eyes and Turquoise Eyes). There is such diversity in the colours that cat’s eyes come in and I never tire of admiring the beauty of their eyes. Reference photo for this artwork was taken by Ainhoa Pcb http://www.flickr.com/photos/ainhoap/455734885/ and was used with her kind permission.

19×24 watercolor enhanced colored pencil. Original available. The German Shepherd Dog (also Alsatian) is a popular breed of dog. German Shepherds are highly intelligent, agile and well-suited to active working environments. They are often deployed in various roles such as police work, guarding, search and rescue, therapy and in the military. Based on 2006 American Kennel Club statistics, German Shepherd Dogs are the third most popular breed in the United States with 43,575 registrations. They can also be found working as guide dogs for the blind. Despite their suitability for such work, German Shepherds can also make loyal and loving pets inside the home. They enjoy being around people and other animals, although socialization is critical for young puppies in order to prevent aggressive and dangerous behavior. German Shepherds are well-suited to obedience, with advanced and prestigious titles available to test both the handler and dog in various schutzhund trials. The proper English name for the breed is German Shepherd Dog (a literal translation from the German Deutscher Schäferhund) but they are usually informally referred to as GSDs or as “German Shepherds”. In addition, the sobriquet police dog is used in many countries where the GSD is the predominant or exclusive breed used by the police force. Anti-German sentiment was still high in the wake of World War I (1914 – 1918), and change of German-oriented names in the UK – including that of the Royal Family – were common at the time when a few dogs were taken to Britain and the United States. In 1919, the English Kennel Club gave the breed a separate register. Since it was feared that the name German Shepherd Dog could be an impediment, the name Alsatian was introduced, from Alsace, a traditionally German-speaking French area on the west bank of the Rhine which had been annexed by the German Empire in 1870 but restored to France in 1918. This name is still used in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and the Commonwealth. Only in 1977 did the British Kennel Club authorize the breed to be known again as the German Shepherd Dog. This is my first attempt playing with food dye, water and my computer monitor as a brightly lit backdrop. See here for how I created this shot. (The stack of dvds were implemented after this shot was taken) / / This was pretty damn difficult without a tripod or assistant.. One hand holding the camera , one hand holding the dropper, full of dye. Having to get focus on the camera, hold it straight, shoot and drop the dye at once.. I need a tripod haha! / / I had heaps of fun trying to make this work though. Soon learning that dropping the dye closer to the front of the glass allowed for more clarity in the shot. / / The next step will be multiple colours, but not till a tripod is involved lol.
