Alas, art and I are not talking again. something about me buying another dress… Art wants all my funds spent on it. Only the best paper, only the best frames, only… it goes on and on. I’m thinking of moving and let art have the apartment. / I made a monster…Help! Art is now complaining I need a new haircut. I am now going to hide in bathroom , very safe as art is scared of water.

Now that smoking is becoming an anti social habit, cigarette vending machines are becoming obsolete. But wait! There is a cunning plan in the US to convert cigarette machines into art vending machines. How about heaps RedBubble vending machines in Australian cities to sell mini block mounted artworks, swap cards, mini portfolios etc :-) Check it out here http://www.artomat.org/home.html

I should be sketching more designs, but I instead am browsing the net constantly for art and inspiration. Inspiration for when I do sit down and sketch! I love to see what others are doing, it amazes me how diverse art and life is. It is hard to understand how we think differently, when all you know is how you think? While we know and accept difference, we can’t really comprehend how it feels to be someone else and to have lived their life. But, in art you can see such differences. Ok, starting to get really deep, have woken from my trance! Better go…and sketch.

anyone who has been involved in creating or appreciating art for a reasonable length of time should be aware of the ongoing tension between high art and popular art. this would especially ring true for those people who have spent time in a formalised academic environment. while art schools and art theory have brought popular culture under the umbrella of acceptable practice (they had little to no choice in doing otherwise or see art disappear from the face of the earth) there remains a residue of distinction which separates the cool and the significant. cool is a term bandied around ad nauseam by all people from all walks of life. in todays art world it finds particular placement among those who champion popularised forms of expression. Street art, stencil art, comic art, animation, audio/video and anything capable of being posted on the net jump to mind. cool tends to wain in its usage when the individual enters the stratospheric realms of elite art which even in this age of post-deconstruction still persist and persist with a kind of stubborn insistence that it is necessary and the work found in this realm is different and significant compared to all else called art. the significance attached to the work found in the realms of high art are termed thus for two predominant reasons. first is the particular aesthetic which must be achieved to gain consideration for admittance. secondly and just as important is the requisite theoretical attachment the work comes with, much like an email. if an artists work lacks either of these things there is little chance it will be considered. the aesthetic it requires has two basic needs. it must be ambiguous and to a degree confusing. this is essential to encourage as many possible reactions to the work. it is better to say nothing specific. it is far more advantageous to set the work adrift on an ocean of possibility. sometimes if the artist is especially astute they will embed the work with a secret covert language decipherable by all but a few individuals. this language itself is far from full proof and is open to variegated interpretations. such an aesthetic lends itself to theoretical attachment in a similar vein. contemporary artistic theory is far removed from a casual popular description of being cool. it is far more likely to elicit a ‘what the fuck?’ again this is due to a particularity necessary to enable the artwork to distinguish itself and to allow others, wondering whether the work is significant, if in fact it is. now to elicit a ‘damn, that’s cool’ requires less and falls into the treasured realm of the spontaneous. it is far more immediate, requiring the observer merely to come into contact with the artwork for the briefest of moments. a connoisseur of the cool knows what they like and does not need an artwork to be validated by a community to enable them to proclaim their positive affirmation. whether you like the cool or the significant is of little consequence. the cool is not interested in gaining validation by the significant. that world is too full of uniformity and necessitation. in some cases they may be even unaware of the existence of the significant. in turn the significant has territory to defend and standing to maintain. they see the cool as lacking development and insight and failing to contribute to the advancement of art.

A mixed-media exhibition by artists with and without disability exploring the theme Difference – source for growth: enriching communities by learning to look at ourselves and our world in new ways. Tuesday 2 December to Sunday 21 December 2008 Difference – source for growth is the result of a call for established and emerging artists of all two-dimensional mediums to explore and expand their understanding and appreciation of difference and its contribution to communities. Works by artists with and without disability were encouraged, and will be exhibited as a cohesive body without differentiation, in an exhibition that is symbolic of inclusiveness. The exhibition will show diverse perspectives on the theme portrayed through various styles and mediums, including painting, print-making, photography, collage, drawing and writing. The artists involved are Carl Harris, Trisha Ferguson, Kylie Hughes, Thomas Huber, Larissa MacFarlane, Cathy Lyons, Selwyn Hoffmann, Eugene Cheng, Satchel Lyons, Flossie Peitsch working with MacKillop Family Services and Bayside Secondary College, Saren Dobkins and Andrew Green. The exhibition has been organised by DISTSS, a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to promote a culture of learning for people with disability, the disability service workforce and the community to create a more inclusive society. This is in the context of a broad social agenda driven by human rights. Difference – source for growth will be held in the Foyer at Gasworks Arts Park, a fully accessible venue that also holds Australia’s premier international arts & disability festival/conference, The Art Of Difference. The exhibition coincides with the launch of a new name for DISTSS, and a celebration of the exhibition and renaming will be held on Friday 12 December, from 3:30pm in The Foyer. The free event will feature Rod Quantock, with music by the BiPolar Bears. .. as I have probably stated before, and as I am bound to state again, that I find this sort of talk, this sort of exclusion of an art style, morally offensive: “I’d like to mention now that this isn’t a group for photography or digital artwork (i.e work created in photoshop, illustrator etc).” Why MORALLY offensive? Because, it’s rather like the artistic equivalent of saying “Well, you may have pale skin, Irishman, but you still have big ass lips and you’d better just go eat with the jigaboos if you know what’s good for you!” 1) If you only want your kind of artist in the group, then define it by what you want there, not by whom you don’t, first and foremost. 2) Learn more about what you are excluding, because people who use photoshop, illustrator, etc. and I have NOTHING in common, on most days, in how we create our digital art. Except, of course, that somewhere in there, a computer gets involved – just like with everyone else on Red Bubble! Technically, you are all digital artists by the standards of people who believe that digital painting and digital manipulation are all the same kind of art genre. You upload things, you create them in digital format so as to show them off, and people order prints from those digital representations. It doesn’t really make you a digital artist, though, does it? And, if you use a digital calculator, does that make you one? So, you see, there is a difference between using digital methods in one way or in another way; some of them are art, real art, as in creation of a painting from start to finish, just as they would happen offline except in digital format. In other words, it is not a real pen or a real brush, but, it is a real artist, really moving their hands, using their brains, selecting paints and brushes on the screen, and really creating this piece. They do not want to be lumped together with the people who select a stamp, select a filter, and call it good. Not ever! Not anymore than a painter wants to be called a rubber stamper, or to have the rubber stamp users called painters! Both of which, by the way, can end with stunning results! Or utter crap, for that matter! Photoshop is, by it’s very nature, not intended to be a painting program; though, from what I understand, you can do it, or at least drawing, to some extent. Illustrator is also not intended, primarily, to be a painting program. However, Corel Photo-Paint, please note the hyphen, is both for graphic art design and out and out digital painting. You can do one, the other, or both, and that is entirely what it’s made for. You can go all technical if you want to, but, you don’t have to. You can just paint! You can mix your own colors, make your own palettes, choose between watercolor and oil, etc. Art Rage 2.5 is for painting and drawing, full stop! There is none of that other stuff. It’s not for making posters, or manipulating photos, at all. Kindly do not lump digital artists together with digital manipulators or digital graphic designers. We are all different people, who do different things, except when we choose to pick up the tools of the other persons and play with them for a while. Just like sometimes the oil painter will do a quick charcoal drawing, or use a rubber stamp and markers to make a card. That they do this on occasion does not define them as an artist or as a person. Maybe one day they’ll have the courtesy to realize that this same truth applies to all. PS: For anyone who might have gotten offended by the word jigaboo: that is my point! It’s offensive! It’s alienating people and treating them as if they are not as good as other people; and to do it to two peoples, and throw them into the same category when they are obviously different peoples, is actually more offensive, not less! We are all human, we are all artists, and therefore we should all be considered to some degree, as to how to be included or how not to be insulted in the exclusion. Like, for instance, maybe when someone is talking about the art of portraiture, instead of emphasizing that it should be one on one, maybe they should be emphasizing that they are specifically interested in watercolors, or oils, or acrylics, or drawings, or traditonal mediums used before the advent of computers. Because I can sit here at my computer, have a model in front of me, and paint their portrait digitally, and that makes it 1 on 1 and it makes it the art of portraiture; and it’s not using Photoshop or Illustrator, or etc. – since etc. implies something similar in nature to those two programs. But, nevertheless, my kind can’t get in! There’ll be no drinking from their water fountain! And, it doesn’t matter that I can and do paint and draw in the traditional ways and that this is just natural to me, no lessons, ever. All that matters is that I smell like a digital artist, now. (sigh)

“This is a Group For Traditional Artists who love painting florals and wish to showcase their chosen Subject and Traditional Mediums. Please, no digital works and no photos or photo manipulations; traditionally painted works only.” / Tradition: an inherited pattern of thought or action custom: a specific practice of long standing I got my Corel Photo-point 8 from my Dad, and in more ways than one. He bought it, he talked me into trying it (when I was dead set against digital art because of all the “rubber stamp” sort of digital art there is out there), except that I started out with a different number. It was Corel Photopaint 4 or something. So, it is inherited thought and action. I have been using Corel Photo-paint since I was 19 years old, or thereabouts. Maybe 21, maybe 17. So, at the very least, I have been using it for what is fast approaching 20 years. I was not the first person to make a piece of digital art. They were doing it long before I got involved. So, it is a specific practice of long standing, on a personal level and on a larger scale, too. And, as for photography, well .. it has been around a bit longer than that, as has manipulation of photos. In fact, as I have pointed out before, when I was a child, photography was finally accepted as artwork, but, acrylics and watercolor paintings still were not considered accepted, traditional forms of painting. So, I wonder, does that mean they will not let people post watercolor and acrylic paintings in that group that I have quoted, above? I doubt it. Well, guess what, close-minded people: I paint traditionally, as traditionally as you do. Digital art existed BEFORE anything other than oil paintings, or pen and ink, were accepted as traditional art. Oh, and, of course, carving in marble. So, say what you mean, but, stop being belittling, derogatory, or just plain otherwise rude about it. If what you want is only paintings on canvas or paper, say so! If you only want oils, say so. But, don’t you dare insult what I do, just to make you feel more like an actual artist, because I can paint circles around you.. and I would .. and it wouldn’t be traditional, but, it would be symbolic, and it would be art. I wish to showcase my chosen subject and traditional medium and I love painting florals. I love painting them digitally, as is my tradition. So much fear of what you don’t understand! How is that sort of talk “playing nice”? To further illustrate the point, here is another quote: / “This is a Group For Artists who love painting STILL LIFE And Florals and wish to Highlight their chosen Subject and Medium. / Only florals, or still life with flowers, fruit, or vegetables will be accepted. / WATERCOLOR ONLY! / Acrylic will be accepted ONLY if used as a water medium in the style of watercolors” These quotes were from two different groups, wherein one painting I recently favorited, was submitted. Please note the difference. The first one is insulting photography and digital art. The other one is making a statement of the exclusive nature of the group. Which makes it a bit of a bummer, that I can’t join in the fun, and I still have nowhere to post my lovely flower piccies, but, at least I’m not being insulted! And, before you tell me to calm down, or not to get angry: I am not angry. What I am is a member of a community, the Red Bubble community, that says that people should “play nice”, and who wants other people to also follow that suggestion. I mean, there are many times I have run into things that I did not consider art, or at least not “real” art, and did I make bold, sweeping statements or even mean little comments about it? No, I did not. It’s not for me to judge the issue, except on a personal level. I had groups and I did not want to see nudes, so I put down that nudes were not accepted. I did not say that nudes were untraditional or that they are not art. It is obvious, by their duration, that they are capabe of being both. So, if you don’t want digital art, put down what you do want and what is accepted, is what I’m saying. Just don’t say digital art is not traditional, because it makes you look close-minded, prudish, behind the times, and insane, to those of us who know better. We “play nice” and don’t respond to your insults with emails that start out with “F… you people!” or that speak of your unobservant nature; but, that doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking it. Why do you want to tear the community down with your prejudcies? / It is not too much to ask that you simply stop insulting our art mediums, now, is it? Thank you for your time.
