Eilean Donan Castle, winter 2007
Romance depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits etc Eilean Donan castle bathing in the early afternoon light _As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most important attractions in the Scottish highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932_ / http://www.eileandonancastle.com/
Last Sunday I wend down to Sculpture By The Sea at Bondi Beach. The sky was amazing. It rained all the way down in the car (at 5am) then stopped as I parked. The clouds threatened rain for the 90 min I was taking photos, but then just as I was getting ready to go, a window opened up in the clouds and beautiful golden light streamed over the sculptures. The dark threatening clouds made the perfect backdrop. This image is a 3 shot HDR image. I printed this image up and it looks great in my hall… It has become one of my favorites.

/ . / I had some requests of a portrait shot of my photo entitled “Luna over Luna Park”. Luckily, I had taken the shot. I’m not great at giving photos titles, hence the title for this one. This was taken on the same night of my other photos “Luna Over Luna Park”, “Luna Harbour” and “Luna PANORAMA”. The photos were taken in quite quick succession. I attempted to combine the full moon, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge. You might be interested in viewing the other photos because this is in Portrait, two are in Landscape, and one PANORAMA. It’s amazing how a similar subject can be photographed in slightly different ways, and produce different results. I will interested in knowing which of the four is you favourite !

Tom Uglys and the Captain Cook bridges by David Petranker Strong westerly winds across NSW have generated one of the most spectacular dust storms in the history of Sydney according to the Weather Channel. An orange haze has covered the city, reducing visibility, causing transport problems and creating health concerns for those with respiratory problems. “This is the biggest dust storm I have ever seen in Sydney,” says Dick Whitaker, senior meteorologist at The Weather Channel with more than 40 years of meteorological experience. “The last dust storm to hit Sydney was in October 2002 but it was nowhere as big as the one we are seeing today.” “The storm is as a consequence of an extended period of strong winds and very dry conditions over western NSW. We are looking at it gradually improving later this morning to early afternoon but it should remain hazy all day.” Leader readers have been quick to grab the abundance of photo opportunities this morning. Sydney woke to the red haze as dust blown in from western NSW caused havoc. All citybound lanes on the M5 East tunnel were closed earlier this morning while ferries were cancelled and some trains were delayed. Even a horse racing meeting at Canterbury Park racecourse had to be cancelled today. Passengers at Sydney Airport were told to expect significant delays and motorists should take extra care throughout the day because of harsh weather conditions. Sutherland SES spokesman John Gonzalez said volunteers had taken away fallen trees at Kareela and Menai. Matt Kirby at Kogarah SES said his team removed trees at Hurstville, Blakehurst and Rockdale. Primary schools in St George and Sutherland Shire are also taking precautions, keeping children in classrooms until the dust settles. Students from Our Lady of Fatima Primary School at Caringbah, were among many advised by teachers to remain inside with the windows closed. http://www.theleader.com.au/news/local/news/general/dust-storm-loses-puff/1631494.aspx
