  • On a day trip on the Waverly (the world’s last ocean going paddle steamer), the sky over the Isle of Arran promised rain and we didn’t have to wait long before nature delivered it in bucket loads.

  • Just a bit of a change with this one. The sight of this flock of cormorants off the coast of the Isle of Arran was spectacular: Nature at its finest. So here I have abandoned technical realism for a natural realism i.e. tried to capture the scene as it appeared to me rather than the camera if you see what I mean. / All I have done here is to differentially blur elements of the photograph to create a more dream-like scene which, to me, is a better representation of the original but I realize that this is very much a personal view. / I hope others of you like it and understand what I am trying to say and do here but thanks for looking either way! / Richard

  • I’m not sure if this really is a wreck or the remains of some old pier. Either way, it’s taken a battering the past couple of years and will probably be gone soon. The mountains in the background are on the Isle of Arran in the Clyde Estuary, Scotland.

  • Taken in the Autumn while walking up Glen Sannox – Arran Island – Scotland

  • A view from Brodick across Brodick Bay and Merkland Wood towards Goatfell, which is one of the 4 ‘Corbetts’ on the Isle of Arran. The origin of the name ‘Goat Fell’ is taken either from the Norse ‘geita’ for goat, and ‘field’ for mountain or fell, or the Gaelic ‘Gaoithbheinn’ – Mountain of the Wind. With the sky changing and a storm approaching ‘Mountain of the Wind’ does seem more appropriate.

  • Sitting in a lonely bus shelter waiting for the rain to stop, or a bus to come – both forlorn hopes late on a cold autumn day in Lochranza. Then the clouds parted and gave me this.

  • The Isle of Arran, lodged between the Kilbrannan Sound and the Firth of Clyde, off the Scottish west coast is a fantastic place full of wonderful things to discover. The images in this calendar show some that I have wandered past at odd times.

  • Looking down the Firth of Clyde from Kildonan on the South coast of Arran the moon rises over Ailsa Craig, also affectionately known as ‘Paddy’s Milestone’.

  • A lovely old clinker rowing boat owned by a wood-carver in Corrie. He keeps threatening to paint it much to my disapproval

  • Still on the superb west coast of Arran, the variety of pebbles both in form and type is a real feature and their location in such a beautiful area adds even more to their appeal somehow. / Thanks for looking in. / Richard Tech Detls / Nikon D200 / Sigma 10-30mm@ 10mm / 1/20s f22 / ISO200 / Polariser

  • Back on the superb west coast of Arran, this one required getting wet feet! The swirls of the water in amongst the pebbles as the tide crept in was too tempting to miss:-) Thanks for looking in. / Richard Tech Detls / Nikon D200 / Sigma 10-20mm @11mm / 1/10s f25 / ISO200

  • A view of Dun Fionn with Holy Isle beyond from Corrie, Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde

  • Every now and again I like to upload a picture or two with a bit of a twist. This one is a photograph of sea mayweed on a beach on the west coast of Arran but, as is often the way with photography, the photograph doesn’t have the impact of the original as the eye can work wonders with 3D that it can’t in only 2 dimensions. / So here, I have used a combination of distortions to arrange the image as a whole to take on the shape of a flower and highlight the central region. / I doubt it will win any competitions but, as ever, as long as I am happy with the result, that is all that really matters! Thanks for looking, / Richard

  • Looking over to Arran from North beach in Ardrossan, West Scotland, on a cold november moring as the sun comes up. / Canon Eos 450D / 29mm, ISO 100, f/18, 1/20 sec exp / Edited and cropped in photoshop, with levels and curves ajustments made.

  • Another view of the World from Above taken from a commercial flight. Few of the 36-seater prop planes’ windows offered a view without the wing or exhaust fumes and mine was no exception. So I was extremely pleased to catch this shot of the Isle of Arran as we banked and descended towards Glasgow after flying over the Kintyre penninsula. Taken on the short flight from Islay to Glasgow, Scotland. Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm. Clean window, right light and a bit of luck. Various tonal corrections, etc. in PS. 27.12.2009 121 views. Kisimul Castle, Barra: /

  • This was taken from the side of Portencross, Ayrshire I never really go to, using my ND 3.0 ten stop filter and a grad – 0.9 hard I think. I chose this particular shot due to the vibrant green in the foreground, it turned out so green though, (due to the low angle of the light, and the rock facing it) I had to desaturate the RAW file a bit in order to keep the photo from hurting my eyes! Canon Eos 5D, ISO 50 for 3 minutes 20 seconds at f22 (could have done with longer, I had to adjust the exposure in photoshop RAW which I don’t like doing too much), B&W 10 stop screw in with a 0.9 hard grad, 17-40L at 27mm.

  • Nikon D90 / 18-105mm Lens Sunsetting over Arran, West Coast Scotland

  • Nikon D90 / 18-105mm Lens Sunset over looking the North Shore Ayrshire West Coast Scotland

  • Another very early morning trip today, however this time I managed to stay dry! This was taken just after 5am. I went to Portencross to look for some cool seaweed covered rocks I saw last time, however the tide was too high and I couldn’t find them. I got a few shots, as yet unprocessed, before turning my attention to the peir. I remembered it had these great big holes in it, and thought I might get an interesting result if I went for a long exposure shot which kept detail and colour all the way through it, especially important was getting colour and detail in the water through the holes. Canon Eos 5D, 17-40L at 17mm, 15 seconds at f22, ISO 50. 1.2 ND and 0.9 ND hard grad.

  • Sunset over the tip of the Isle of Arran, from North Beach Ardrossan over the Clyde Estuary, Scotland (Taken with a Fuji S5800)

  • Portencross Ayrshire. Canon Eos 5D, 17-40L at 17mm, f22, ISO50 for 20 seconds with a 0.9 hard grad.

  • A sunset casts pink and purple hues over the island of Pladda, Arran, Scotland. Featured in ‘Islands of The World’, 20/11/09.

  • Commissioned Painting by Andrew and Liz Walker, Surrey, of Portencross castle on the Ayrshire coast, where the sun sets over the Isle of Arran. Oil on Canvas | Original size 60×60cm SCOTTNAISMITH.CO.UK
