  • Ἀθηνᾶ / Of Pallas Athena, guardian of the city, I begin to sing. Dread is she, and with Ares she loves deeds of war, the sack of cities and the shouting and the battle. It is she who saves the people as they go out to war and come back. / Homeric Hymn to Athena 11.1–5 More Olympians / / / /

  • Bands of iron, forged and moulded to make a warrior’s armour. / At dawn the city’s defenders went out to meet the foe. The battle was fierce and bloody from the first. Men slew, and in their turn were slain. Finally, one warrior stood alone between the invader king and the city with all its treasures. / The dark master saw victory at hand. Metal shrieked against metal but the bands of iron held firm beneath his sword. The city’s last protector, weary though he was, summoned one final reserve of strength. / The invader king fell lifeless as his head was parted from his shoulders.

  • I went to the Medieval Fair at Gumeracha today & met no less than four fellow bubblers! Peter Ryan AKA Furious Ennui & the lovely Sadandal, who were kind enough to let me come into the arena during Peter’s battle to take some photographs : ) The armour that Peter is wearing weighs no less than 34kg! While at the festival I also bumped into another couple of bubblers, Pat Tapping and her husband. The bubble is getting bigger : )

  • Ned Kelly is perhaps Australia’s best know bushranger. Many artists have immortilised his life (and particularly his home-made armour). This is my attempt to reveal more of the man and yet incorporate a “myth” like feeling to his image – hence a degree of abstraction and uncertainty. Mixed media & manipulation on PS Michael

  • The castle is sited on a strategic rocky promontory by Pembroke River. The first fortification on the site was a Norman motte and bailey. It had earthen ramparts and a timber palisade. In 1189, Pembroke Castle was acquired by William Marshal. The Earl Marshal then set about turning the earth and wood fort into an impressive stone castle. The inner ward, which was constructed first, contains the huge round keep with its domed roof. Its original first-floor entrance was through an external stairwell. Inside, a spiral stairwell connected its four storeys. The keep’s domed roof also has several putlog holes that supported a wooden-fighting platform. If the castle was attacked, the hoarding allowed defenders to go out beyond the keep’s massive walls above the heads of the attackers. The inner ward’s curtain wall had a large horseshoe-shaped gateway. But only a thin wall was required along the promontory. This section of wall has a small observation turret and a square stone platform. Domestic buildings including William Marshal’s Great Hall and private apartments were within the inner ward. In the late 13th Century, more buildings were added. These included a new Great Hall that enclosed a large cavern beneath the castle that was created by water erosion. The cave, once fortified, may have later served as a boathouse. The outer ward was defended by a large gatehouse, barbican and several massive round towers. The outer wall is 5 metres (16 ft) thick in places. Pembroke Castle superficially resembles a concentric castle but it is more accurately described as a linear fortification because, like the later 13th-century castles at Caernarfon and Conwy, it was built on a rock promontory surrounded by water. This meant that attacking forces could only assault a narrow front. Architecturally, Pembroke’s thickest walls and towers are all concentrated on its landward side facing the town, the river creating a natural defense around the rest of its perimeter. • Submerged Sherman tank off Saipan’s Garapan Beach, Northern Mariana Islands, USA The Battle of Saipan was a battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands from 15 June 1944 to 9 July 1944. The invasion fleet embarking the expeditionary forces left Pearl Harbor on June 5, 1944, the same day Operation Overlord was launched with the invasion of Normandy. The Normandy landings were the larger amphibious landing, but the Marianas invasion fielded the larger fleet. By July 7, the Japanese had nowhere to retreat. Saito made plans for a final suicidal banzai charge. On the fate of the remaining civilians on the island, Saito said, “There is no longer any distinction between civilians and troops. It would be better for them to join in the attack with bamboo spears than be captured.” At dawn, with a group of a dozen men carrying a great red flag in the lead, the remaining able-bodied troops — about 3,000 men — charged forward in the final attack. Amazingly, behind them came the wounded, with bandaged heads, crutches, and barely armed. The Japanese surged over the American front lines, engaging both Army and Marine units. The 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 105th U.S. Infantry were almost destroyed, losing 650 killed and wounded. However, the fierce resistance of these two battalions, as well as that of Headquarters Company, 105th Infantry, and elements of 3rd Battalion, 10th Marines (an artillery unit) resulted in over 4,300 Japanese killed. For their actions during the 15-hour Japanese attack, three men of the 105th Infantry were awarded the Medal of Honor – all posthumously. Numerous others fought the Japanese until they were overwhelmed by the largest Japanese Banzai attack in the Pacific War . Many hundreds of Japanese civilians committed suicide in the last days of the battle, some jumping from “Suicide Cliff” and “Banzai Cliff”. Efforts by U.S. troops to persuade them to surrender instead were mostly futile. Widespread propaganda in Japan portraying Americans and British as “devils” who would treat POWs barbarically, deterred surrender (see Japanese Military Propaganda (WWII)). In the end, about 22,000 Japanese civilians died. Almost the entire garrison of troops on the island — at least 30,000 — died. For the Americans, the victory was the most costly to date in the Pacific War. 2,949 Americans were killed and 10,364 wounded, out of 71,000 who landed. – Wikipedia WARNING / ©2009/2010 Globalphotos All rights reserved. / All photographs, text and images by Globalphotos are the exclusive property of Globalphotos – protected under Australian and international copyright laws. / These images may not be reproduced, copied or manipulated without written permission. / No use for Public Domain. / Use of any image for another photographic concept or illustration is a violation of copyright.

  • Woodlice need moisture because they breathe through gills, called pseudotrachea, and so are usually found in damp, dark places, such as under rocks and logs. They are usually nocturnal and are detritivores, feeding mostly on dead plant matter, although they have been known to feed on cultivated plants, such as ripening strawberries and tender seedlings. Woodlice then recycle the nutrients back into the soil. Some species of woodlouse are able to roll into a ball-like form when threatened by predators, leaving only their armoured back exposed. This ability, or dominant behavior, explains many of the woodlouse’s common names. / Tilburg Netherlands / Canon 40D / Sigma 150 mm / f 7.1 / 1/100 / ISO 100 / 100 views / Featured in 1:1 Macro Photography November 2009 / Spotlight of The Day Bug Hunt Group November 2009 / Featured in Extreme Close-Ups December 2009
