Canon 10D / 17-40mmL Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hasdeztwazi, or “spiral rock arches” by the Navajo, is located a few kilometers away from the upper Antelope Canyon and is a more difficult hike. Second, beams (shafts of direct sunlight radiating down from openings in the top of the canyon) are much more common in Upper than in Lower. The Slot Canyons of Colorado Plateau never cease to amaze me with their beauty and color. Wandering through this slot for the third time I always seem to find different view. New colors or textures reveal themselves as the day progresses almost as if the light is bottled and then judiciously poured forth for our enjoyment. The brilliant lines and colors of the sandstone walls of Antelope Canyon as mid day light pours in from above.

Click Here / Upper Antelope Canyon – USA Tour 2008 The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse’ bighanilini, which means “the place where water runs through rocks.” Upper Antelope is at about 4,000 feet in elevation and the canyon walls rise 120 feet above the stream bed. Though dry most of the year, Antelope Canyon runs, and sometimes floods, with water after rains. It is the water, slowly wearing away the sandstone grain by grain, that has formed the beautiful and graceful curves in the rock. Wind has also played a role in sculpting this fantastic canyon. Antelope-Corkscrew Canyon, shows a powerful ray of light coming through the cavern top and illuminating the cave walls in brilliant orange-reddish colors. Antelope Canyon is so unique, it has also become known as The Corkscrew, Corkscrew Canyon, Upper Antelope, Wind Cave, or The Crack. Upper Corkscrew Canyon is located around the Navajo Reservations and usually requires a jeep to get you there. This location is just outside Page, Arizona. A few miles passed Tortilla Flats, which is outside of Apache Junction, Arizona, this wonderful little oasis pops into view, part of Salt River. Although it is nearly Christmas, the vibrant yellow foliage remains. / Shot with Olympus Stylus 720SW auto, handheld.

Every once in awhile I see something in the viewfinder that just really excites me with the possibilities and this happens to be on of those images. After 4 hours of twisting and turning in the narrow confines of Antellop Canyon I spotted this series of repeating curves and some nice light and the rest is history. Nikon D80 / F9, 1/15, ISO100 The hike to Supai Village (Grand Canyon, AZ, USA) was 8 miles in the rain. Arriving after dusk, at this, Havasu Falls, the water was flowing chocolate. We were treated to many colors, with this being the picture 60 hours later. Grand Canyon National Park, through US National Parks This Image was taken at Yaki Point during a trip to Grand Canyon. Yaki Point is one of the most beautifull lookouts on the south rim and if you ask me the best on during sunrise! / I was there sometime between 4am and 5am in the morning to do some scouting with my flashlight since it was my first day at the canyon. Although I couldn’t see much of the canyon yet the tree you see in the foreground instantly appealed to me as a nice framing. After some more scouting I came back there, set up my tripod and waited, enjoying the sunrise. / I was lucky the strom you see building up on the horizon waited long enough to let the sun through for some minutes. Not much later it was all hung over and snowing. / I love this shot because it seems like everything fit together for me. The time window for this shot was so short and it seems I also selected the right place :-) I came back there the following two days and just didn’t have the same magical light! and after more scouting also didn’t find a better place, at least for me. kind regards, / Michael also available:
