This calendar shows the 12 signs of the zodiac. / Drawing or painting those 12 star signs was my absolutely HIT and a great CHALLENGE for myself in order to be creative and also to create a calendar with this amazing theme for 2010! The works range from original watercolour pencil drawings to original acrylic/gouache paintings on paper. Part of a new ICON series which takes ideas from religious iconography, portraiture and art nouveau and mixes it with the artist’s love of animals, abstraction and stylized imagery. The results are both mystical and vibrant. ICON I depicts a ram (Aries). Original artwork measures 11×15” and is created with mixed media (oil pastels, colored pencils, art pens, metallic paint pens) and embellished with colored foil on blue watercolor paper.

No one alive will ever see this again! / I know that I won’t be getting much sleep in August, as my eyes will be on the skies to witness the red planet up close and personal. / Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. It is guesstimated, the next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. / Due to the way Jupiter’s gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again. / The encounter will culminate on August 27th, when Mars comes within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the Moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide, at a modest 75 power magnification. / Mars will look as large as the full Moon to the naked eye and will be easy to spot at the beginning of August as it rises in the east at 10pm and reaching its azimuth at 3am. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 am. / Truly a sight that no human being has seen in recorded history, so mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see and watch Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month… / Mars is the security department head, responding with action and self-defense, making you brave, courageous, daring and even fearless, symbolically speaking. I started with the beautiful background of trees, and overlaid this with several layers of textures and colour.
