Two soldiers from the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team stand guard in the rear hatches of their stryker vehicle while on patrol north of Mosul, Iraq. Many unfamiliar with the geography of Iraq believe it is entirely arid, but as this picture shows, northern Iraq is quite hilly and in the spring, the fields are a vibrant green because of all the precipitation coming off the northern range. Salt flats near Swakopmund photographed from the air. What I find interesting is that as the water recedes the algae metabolise at a different rate that changes their colour. That is why it looks like there is blood on the landscape.
Taken in South West Queensland after recent rains.
This was taken out in the Saudi Arabian Desert, I loved the patterns in the sand, it reminded me of the motion of snakes.

Stark dark clouds coming in over drought affected land between Pinnaroo and Loxton in South Australia. Not a drop fell but it gave the sense of impending rains much needed in that area. The Barb you see is actually the top strand on the original normal stock fence that has been covered over by drifting sands. A new one has been put up behind it.. Quite a scary sight.
