A plan for my culminating project in art. This is just a sketch scanned into photoshop and edited so that it might look like the real thing. The real thing will be, like, 6 feet by 3 feet on butcher paper, and with gouache and gesso and stuff… I’m working on it now, and it’s so so fun :) Nothing beats traditional hand done stuff, really.

Do you have a gripe on Redbubble? / Consider this: In Australia a report found the number of homeless youths, aged between 12 and 18, across the country had doubled to 22,000 in the past two decades. Can you imagine your 12 year old living on the street? / Three 14-year-old Hong Kong children have been sentenced to more than three years for the armed hold-up of a jewellery shop. They are 14 years old for heaven’s sake! Children! They will spend 3 years in jail. / A 19-year-old climber has died after slipping and falling in Mount Aspiring National Park in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Someone’s family is grieving One person was killed and 10 others injured when a car ploughed into a bicycle race on a highway in Mexico. people just going about their business killed and injured There’s no punchline with any of this. Sure, the news is not always bad or sad, but it is LIFE. This is REAL LIFE people. So, before you hit the report button here on Redbubble, before you write a scathing journal or stir up discontent, have a think about REAL LIFE. There are far worse things than being told you’re an idiot by someone you have never met. There are far worse things than feeling offended by an image or disliking the stand someone takes in a discussion. You may have the right to feel aggrieved, sure, but you haven’t been in a bicycle accident, or fallen down a mountain, or lost a child in tragic circumstances. You’re not living on the street, or in serious trouble. Before doing anything in anger – walk away from the computer and do something completely unrelated. Either you will forget about it, or you will get some perspective. I know Redbubble is just a website. I know it’s just that. But I can’t help feeling sad at the nastiness that seems to be growing here. I can’t help feeling growing alarm that a place I spend every spare moment is being so adversely affected by petty squabbling that it will implode. Nope, the red dot next to my name does not give me any insider knowledge whatsoever. I have no idea how Redbubble Administration is working to subdue the destruction that is happening here. But I do know the place is losing its charm and happy environment because of a minority of people who feel it is their lot in life to set everyone else straight. The underlying rule at Redbubble is “play nice”. When we all joined up we agreed to behave within the rules and the credo to “play nice”. Why is it so hard for adults and professionals to follow such a simple principle? Please, think about Real Life before you weigh in to any arguments.

  • WAR
    by Lisa Weber

    US$3.85–US$102.60

WAR… / . / . / Is WAR just a word? / Its meanings are far reaching and deafening. / WAR is a state of mind, a physical struggle, discord, antagonism, conflict between people, nations, factions, states. / War is ugly, cruel, combative, relentless, a disrepect for life. / Just to one party, unjust to another. / War began in Heaven, brought to Earth, and through generation after generation it has become a means to an end. / An End with no begining if left unresolved. / Man hasnt the capacity to stop because of something far reaching within his soul…greed, pride, and the nature of SIN. Man talks of Peace and Change but hasnt the ability to stop, what can bring end to WAR? / Anniliation? / But then after anniliation comes a temporary peace, from fear, a need for survival until mankind reaches up into a plateau of wealth again and WAR returns…. eventually. WAR is a burden of mans soul, a part that can never rest no matter his desire, sensibility or determination… WAR is: / . / “W”restling / “A”t / “R”esolution. / . / . / . / Lisa C. Weber ©2007

And so the two would argue on; the summer house and mount

Another inspired poem from a fellow Redbubbler’s artwork / Please visit Robert Hardy and his latest photo here I heard these two arguing in my head looking at this picture and so thought you’d like to hear their senseless bickering ~ Just a bit of whimsical fun! :o) By the by; my Grandpa used the word Druthers often lol I thought he was saying something horrible until I met my kid’s father [a Scot from Glasgow] my grandfather was from Edinburgh way and my ex explained “Druthers” was not a bad word but a mutation of others – to have one’s druthers – was meaning to have your preferred choice …. <)? / Scots are strange beasties :o) Enjoy! :o)

  • My thoughts on using photo manipulation

See here for a recent heated discussion RE photoshoping of google images. I try to think in terms of how I would feel if someone used one of my photoshop-free images, tweaked it and put it back up as their own. Personally I would be wrapped and honoured if someone used my work to create something new, but I would just feel used if they didn’t really make anything new out of it and slapped a filter or two on it and then called it their own. It’s a matter of how much time and energy I put into creating the image against how little time and energy the modifier put in. I’d feel a bit ripped off. I think it’s good manners to ask for permission to use someone’s work, however I strongly believe the orignial artist has an obligation to set their terms before the modifying artist begins doing their thing. It’s a matter for the two artists to decide upon. For example, if someone said “I’m learning how to use photoshop, do you mind if I muck around with your photos” I’d say go ahead. But then I’d also feel oblidged to discuss whether they want to onsell the finished product and give a sense of what I would be happy and unhappy with. I am very very open to collaborating and sharing of work but I do think people have to give credit where credit is due and not take advantage of the hard work of somebody else. It is difficult to actually set a strict guideline or rule on this because it poses questions such as “How changed is changed enough” which can only be answered by the individual. I hope these reasons shed some light on my headspace. I would play with someones image and display it and say “look at what I learned how to do” but I would credit the original artists and I would not sell the new piece without permission. The example above was based on what I would do if the artist was an unknown and I was using a google image- in that case, yet again I would display my talents and say ‘check this out’ but without permission I would not sell it. I do not use photoshop and if I did learn how to use it I doubt I would sell my photoshoped work. I am almost certainly in the minority when I say this- but I see photo editing as one form of art and photo taking as another. Often the 2 cross paths but I can also see them as mutually exclusive talents. I don’t particularly want to be known as a creative and talented photo editor or manipulator so I wouldn’t sell edited work even if it were 100% my own. But that’s just me.

Every time I tell myself that it was the last one. But time and time again I find myself dragged back in by the part of my brain that strives to militantly uphold logic and defend it against the onslaughts of the internet. It usually starts off respectfully enough, but always – ALWAYS – disintegrates into silly childishness, and I’m as guilty as the next person of taking part in it. This is my apology to the rest of you, caught in between by silly argument after silly argument – and an explanation – I truly can’t help it. / cartoon by xkcd If you are interested, here are some internet arguments I have been involved in recently: Objectification of women Bill Henson ...and more Bill Henson Yes, my trigger is usually free speech and freedom of expression, although there are many issues I am liable to pounce on. I am not writing this so you can come to my defence – you may very well disagree with me – but I just need you to know, I’m aware of the problem and I’m working on fixing it. Cheers.

  • The Joys of Moving!

Boy I tell ya, moving is not my most favorite thing in the world to do, especially at Christmas, yes thats right i moved from Saturday the 22nd – Yesterday! So no christmas for us…not even a turkey or ham sandwich! At least my dogs were happy i always get them those stocking toys at Walmart for 5.00 each and it comes with like 6-7 toys in it, so i get them 6 of them, you just cant beat the price and quanity of toys you get, heck some of them are like 6.95 each at a pet store! They just love to unwrap them (yep i wrap with wrapping paper so they have to tear into them l;ke little kids (its hilarious) and then they see them and cant wait to put them all over the house and fight over who wants which toy ( 2 golden retrievers i have BTW). It keeps them happy for a year plus all the tennis balls and catch we play daily. Anyway, loading boxes, unloading boxes, moving furniture, adapting animals to new enviroment, everything! And still have to go back and clean old house! But in exchange I moved into what i like to call a Mini Mansion, a brand new 2007, 3143 Sq ft, 5 Bdrm + Bonus Room, 3 bath, 1/2 acre home, its got everything a girl could dream of! Archways, cherrywood cabinets, fireplace( not common in florida), plants shelfs, cathedral ceilings, tray ceilings in all other rooms, 2 living rooms, huge garden tub, huge Mstr walkin closet, and so much more! BEST PART DSL FINALLY!!! The hardest part about moving is this, / a) I’ve done it 29 times so far in my life! / b) Four times with just my hubby now, and no matter what, we scream, yell, fight, argue, to the point of divorse everytime! Its the stress and the dang it, “DONT SCRATCH THAT’S” from me! Men just dont care…..they just want it done! Plus its when they try to throw stuff out when we’re not looking! / c) And worse is the aches and pains of muscles you havent used in ages, LORD my feet are killing me, they swelled up, and my heels hurt the most, and my neck, lower back, everything other little part of me! It drives me batty! But now most is done and now its just a matter of arranging everything, and making last minute choices on what now doesnt flow with the new home and i can sell at a garage sale and buy new stuff with the proceeds (great way to meet the neighbors too). Ive already met the neighbors on my right and left, and they are fantastic! Much Older, so that helps as far as they wont hear my birds as easily…lol…yeah i have macaws, a muluccan and a grey, they can get into a battle of who’s louder occassionally and my muluccan sounds like a haller monkey when provoked! Well back to unpacking, filling my pool, walk around the neighborhood and chk out the folks around here. And thanks for your patience on not responding to emails this last week, hope everyone had a great xmas! I thought id share my adventures for christmas as most have with me.Okay back to work I go…... Lisa
