  • A view across the arena in the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. The arena in which the performances took place takes its name from the sand (arena) scattered over it to soak up the blood of combatants. BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at: Rome or Italy.

  • Ronda is a marvelous town in the south of Andalousia in Spain. The town is cut in two by a very deep precipice that you can cross with the Puente Nuevo (see picture of bridge by blackdogcountry). Ronda is also famous for tauromachy with the oldest plaza de toros in Spain. Ronda is the soul of Andalousia. This composition was built of many pictures. It has a very high resolution but the combination of pictures is not always perfect especially in the arena. Hope you like it

  • Built in the late 1800’s… stands the Point Arena Lighthouse… on the Mendocino Coast of California… it’s one of the tallest on the Pacific West Coast… and stands at 115 feet tall… and you can climb to the top! Getting to this lighthouse was also one of the prettiest drives I think I’ve ever been on… with such breathtaking views…

  • I ‘stole’ this shot while my friend Randy (who’s been blessed to be able to make his living as a cowboy) was explaining something to my husband. We learned much, as we listened, about breaking horses. I was struck by the fact that horses are much like people in that to effectively work with them, we must learn to think like them, to get in their minds. When was the last time you tried to figure out what a difficult person was thinking in order to know how to approach them? : )

  • Steer Wrestling at the Rodeo in Poway, Southern California / / Kicking up dust: The rodeo is a completely unique experience, and it’s an intriguing view into a completely different culture. Strict rules exist for the safety of horses, calves, bulls and steers. They are the heart and soul of the rodeo, and the cowboys are proud of their animals. One part of the Rodeo is the Steer Wrestling also known as Bulldogging. / It requires not just strength but also finesse and skill. Speed, timing and leverage are essential. A winning time is usually between 3 to 4 seconds, but these big boys keep getting faster and faster – and although there may be a few broken bones at the end of it, who cares? Yee-Haw! / / / / Laminated Print /

Background Information: / Perga , now commonly spelled “Perge”, was the capital of the then Pamphylia region, which is in modern day Antalya province on the southwestern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Today it is a large site of ancient ruins 15 km east of Antalya in the coastal plain. Located there is an acropolis dating back to the Bronze Age. In the twelfth century BC, there was a large wave of Greek migration from northern Anatolia (in modern day Turkey) to the Mediterranean coast. Many settled in the area immediately east of the area of modern-day Antalya, which came to be known as Pamphylia, meaning “land of the tribes”. Four great cities eventually rose to promincence in Pamphylia: Perga, Sillyon, Aspendos and Side. Perga itself was founded in around 1000 BC and is nearly 20km inland. It was sited inland as a defensive measure in order to avoid the pirate bands that terrorized this stretch of the Mediterranean. In 546 BC, the Achaemenid Persians defeated the local powers and gained control of the region. Two hundred years later, in 333 BC, the armies of Alexander the Great arrived in Perga during his war of conquest against the Persians. The citizens of Perga sent out guides to lead his army into the city. The Lost Arena / The Golden Road / Banff National Park, Moraine Lake /

  • This image was FEATURED by SEA group! I appreciate this and feel honored!! This image was ALSO FEATURED by #1 PUERTO RICO PHOTOGRAPHY group… and also feel super honored! Thank You all! This shot is uploaded specifically for the challenge “Define Yourself” of the WOMAN PHOTOGRAPHER Group. Mariarena is the artistic name I chose when I decided to awaken my camera and give my creativity a second chance. I studied photography many years ago, but life took me to the typical hectic existence of a working “mother of four”. There were no choices until recently… I chose to retire, to live in a beach apartment, to go back to photography and I even chose my name Mariarena… it means “Mar y Arena” in Spanish or “Sand and Sea” in English. / All of my latest choices define who I am today… a creative woman who lives by the seashore enjoying the magic of the sand interacting with the water. / This shot of the seashore defines who I am today , as it is walking in the sand that I have found strength, happiness and self assurance. I have even found an erotic subconscious manifested in many of my photos of sand formations in my RB’s portfolio, but decided not to use a sensual one for fear of being too provocative. Many of my sand and seashore abstract photos in my portfolio are witnesses of who I am. / I have shared with you my inner truth! / / CANON EOS 40-D with CANON lense 28-135mm IS Macro
