The ferret has been domesticated, according to some scholars, for over 2500 years. Ferrets are the coolest pet you could ever own, they have personalities that vary as widely as do humans, their intelligence ranges somewhere between that of a cat and a dog and you get the best of both worlds. He is not as demanding for attention as the dog, nor is he as aloof and independent as the cat. Like the dog, the ferret can be trained to come to his name and to do ‘tricks’. Like the cat, he can be trained to use a litterbox (most of the time). Unlike the dog, he does not have to be walked, but can be trained to walk on a lead and can walk quite fast, but be warned, a ten minute walk will take over an hour, because your little friend will want to investigate every nook and cranny, and every passer by will want to stop for a chat and meet your pet. Ferrets make little noise, apart from a ‘dook dook’ sound when in play mode, and unlike the cat, he retains his playful ‘kittenish’ behavior all of his life. They vary in size depending on sex and whether they have been altered from half a kg up to 3 kgs. They are considered adults at one year and have an average life of 6 to 8 years with some living as long as 12 years. Regardless of age, you will find your ferret to be a hyper energetic little bundle of fur, they are constantly into everything and have a particular form of play known affectionately as the ‘weasel war dance’, where they hop around like they have springs on their feet, back arched, mouth wide open, head swinging back and forth. Ferrets are extremely clever and can use their front paws like hands manipulating objects and opening doors and cupboards etc. They can even open zippers and unscrew bottle tops. Always check your bags before leaving the house or your ferret may pop his head out right in the middle of the supermarket or at that important job interview. If you are going to own a ferret, you have to have a great sense of humor. Ferrets sleep up to 20 hours a day so can be kept in a cage for the most part with just an hour or two out to play morning and night. They are ideal pets for working households, teenagers, and apartment dwellers. Ferrets are susceptible to certain illnesses and need a specific diet so do your research first, and then get ready to spend the most enjoyable and rewarding time of your life.
