Great blue heron (Ardea herodias). / Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge; Titusville, Florida. / 22 March 2007. / Nikon D70s. The great blue heron is, by far, my favorite bird to grace the skies of the North American continent. A large and regal bird, the great blue heron is incredibly common in central Florida. Its range actually extends all the way up to southeastern Alaska. This individual was photographed at the dynamic and rich Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The vast labyrinth of wetlands, dykes and canals or Merritt Island is tucked along the side of NASA’s Cape Canaveral. Merritt Island and Cape Canaveral is a beautiful balance of natural, pristine beauty and advanced, hi-technology. It is because of NASA’s presence that this land is federally protected—an invaluable treasure for the legions of birds and other animals that make Merritt Island their home. THE SUBJECT: / A beautiful pair of Ardea alba (Great Egrets) stalking the shallows in the light of a mid afternoon winter day. THE LOCATION: / On the southern shore of Lake Cathie , NSW, Australia, near the bridge. THE MAKING OF ‘Egret Twins’: / As the birds talked the shallows I stalked them. To do so I had the camera up to my eye, slowly but surely getting closer and closer. That was when I heard a sloshing sound and realised I had just walked into the water up to my ankles! / Fuji S9600: f/8 @ 1/200sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3. Pied Heron at Melbourne Zoo Australia. The Pied Heron, Ardea picata, is found in coastal and subcoastal areas of monsoonal northern Australia as well as some parts of Wallacea and New Guinea. It is a small heron, with dark slaty wings, body and crested head, with a white throat and neck. Immature birds lack the crest as well as the dark colouring on the head and may look like small versions of the White-necked Heron. Its habitat mainly comprises a range of wetlands and wet grasslands. It feeds on insects and other small aquatic animals. It nests in trees, including mangroves, often colonially with other species of heron. / ~Wikipedia Nikon D300. Lens Nikkor 80-400mm ED VR / 400mm, 1/250s, f/5.6, ISO: 3200
The Great Egret is a large bird with all-white plumage that can reach one meter in height and weigh up to 950 g. It is thus only slightly smaller than the Great Blue or Grey Heron (A. cinerea). Apart from size, the Great Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet, though the bill may become darker and the lower legs lighter in the breeding season. In breeding plumage, delicate ornamental feathers are borne on the back. Males and females are identical in appearance; juveniles look like non-breeding adults. The bird in flight has just taken off and has not yet retracted its neck as is typical when flying. / Shot taken in east central Minnesota. Nikon d300, Tamron 200-500mm, handheld

THE SUBJECT: / A juvenile Ardea alba (Great Egret) steps slowly and purposefully through the shallows hunting for a meal. THE LOCATION: / Photographed at Lake Cathie, NSW, Australia on a great winter day. THE MAKING OF ‘Pride’: / On a return visit to this out-of-the-way part of the lake I stalked this youngster as it looked for lunch while I was partially screened by trees along the lake edge. / Due to the conditions I was able to make an exposure aimed at a B&W result but had no idea it would turn out as good as it has. / I have printed this on Ilford Galerie Smooth High Gloss Media and so far it has not developed any colour cast. Fingers crossed! / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/4.9 @ 1/500sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3. Great Blue Heron / (Ardea herodias) Centennial Park, Etobicoke, Ontario / 9/3/09
The largest and most widespread heron in North America, the Great Blue Heron can be found along the ocean shore or the edge of a small inland pond. Ardea herodias I was hiking on the Kasota Prairie and caught this one in the air.

just as i get to the beach to take photos, i come across this huge, blue heron. just standing there. he didn’t seem bothered by me taking his picture. infact, he didn’t even care. / as soon as i got up, and wrapped up my camera, he left. it was my first time seeing a bird like that. lucky enough i was taking photos. seeing him fly reminded me of dinosaurs. i would of followed him if not for the stupid rocks around the beach (it was low tide when i saw it). would you believe i took this with a 55mm focal length with a 2.5 second exposure ? you better :) Note: This was displayed at a gallery showing at Exposure Gallery’s ‘Salon Show’ exhibit last june 19th, 2009. Taken at False Creek, Vancouver BC. Canada First Print I ever sold here!! hopefully not the last.

Shot of a Grey Heron, taken at Colwick Park in Nottingham, UK. I was actually sat on the bank of the lake trying to get some shots of Cormorants, when this guy flew across in front of me and landed on a rock several metres out.
