  • Greetings from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia… Wish you were Here! In a conservative city where photography has not been that long legal, opportunities to capture some shots of the city can be few and far between. Kingdom Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia / February 2009 Kingdom Centre (Arabic: برج المملكة‎) is a supertall skyscraper located in the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is the tallest skyscraper in Saudi Arabia and the 45th tallest building in world with a height of 311 m (1,020 ft). It is also host to the highest mosque in the world. The Tower Contains a total of 43 floors including the basement levels. The Kingdom Centre is owned by Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a prince of the Saudi royal family. It is also the headquarters of his holding company: Kingdom Holding Company. The total cost of the project was US$1 billion and the contract was taken by Saudi Arabian Al-Saif and The Italian Impregilo. Kingdom Centre is situated in Al-Urubah Road between King Fahd Road and Olaya Road in the growing business district of Olaya in Riyadh. Kingdom Centre was the winner of the 2002 Emporis Skyscraper Award, selected as the “Best skyscraper of the world for design”. A five-level shopping center, which also won a major design award, fills the east wing. The large opening is illuminated at night in continuously changing colors. Besides the shopping mall, the Centre includes the Four Seasons Hotel Riyadh and state-of-the-art apartments. The 100 meter long skybridge atop the skyscraper, at a height of 311 meters, contains a public observation deck and a view of the entire city of Riyadh. The ellipse motif taken from the tower’s footprint appears also in the light fixtures, ceiling panels, entrance canopy, wastebins, and furniture. Kingdom centre is in direct axis with Riyadh’s other skyscraper the Al Faisaliyah Center. It creates a silhouetted skyline in the evening. Source: Wikipedia

  • Greetings from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia… Wish you were Here! In a conservative city where photography has not been that long legal, opportunities to capture some shots of the city can be few and far between. The Al Faisaliyah Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia / February 2009 The Al Faisaliyah Center (or Al Faisaliah Center, Arabic: برج الفيصلية‎) is a commercial skyscraper located in the business district of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is the second tallest building in Saudi Arabia after the Kingdom Centre. Immediately below it at ground level, there is a shopping center with major world brands. The Al Faisaliyah Center is about 267 meters high and consists of 44 floors. The 4 corner beams of the al faisaliyah centre join at the top above a golden ball. The design is said to be based on that of a ballpoint pen. Inside the golden ball is a luxury restaurant. There is a clear view of Saudi Arabia’s other skyscraper, the Kingdom Centre, from the Al Faisaliyah Center and the two buildings create a silhouetted skyline in the evening. The tower was designed by UK based architects Foster and Partners and engineers Buro Happold. It is part of a Al Faisaliyah Complex, which consists of a hotel, the tower, and two other buildings. In a conservative city where photography has not been that long legal, opportunities to capture some shots of the city can be few and far between. Ministry buildings can even be that little bit harder! Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia / February 2009 The Ministry of the Interior oversees the provincial governates, public security & law enforcement, the coast guards, civil defence, fire prevention services, border police, special security, domestic intelligence (Mabahith al-’Amma), special investigative functions, including criminal investigation and is responsible for liaising with the Mutawa Religious Police) in the kingdom. The Prince has exhibited a high degree of broad mindedness, when asked about the certain issues facing the royal family the prince responded, “These shortcomings and mistakes can happen in any society. We are trying to solve our mistakes. I would say that nobody is one hundred percent perfect.” As the Interior Minister, Prince Nayef is also the Supervisor General of the Saudi Committee for the Al Quds Intifada, which supports and compensates the families of the Palestinian refugees across the world Intifada. He has been instrumental in committing acts of charities not only to palestanians but also for the Post Tsunami Aid, 2005 Pakistan earthquake, etc. His monetary contributions have been viewed, as possible incentives to carry out such bombings. It is believed that Prince Nayef has personally contributed at least $33 million in charity. The critical nature of Prince Nayef’s is that he is very much required for the stability of the kingdom. He has been instrumental in breaking barriers, for example it was Prince Nayef, and not foreign minister Saud al Faisal, who went to Iran for a ground breaking meeting to renew relations with the regime in April 2001. Similarly, it is the job of the information minister to control the content of all media in the Kingdom. Since 1995, the position has been held by Dr. Fouad bin Abdul Salaam bin Muhammad Al Farsi—but Prince Nayef heads the Supreme Council on Information, which oversees the processing of information including controls on the World Wide Web. Prince Nayef implemented the Al Saud decision to begin issuing women with identity cards in November 2001. The Directorate of Civil Status issued the first identity cards to women on 3 November, thus making it much easier for women to carry out transactions – financial, legal and social – and is therefore considered a highly significant move. Previously women were registered on their husband’s or father’s identity cards. Of Late Prince Nayef has been instrumental in working to bring the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a major economic hub for the middle east. Source: Wikipedia

  • The old Melbourne Royal Exhibition Building, reflected in the spanking new Museum of Melbourne’s glass walls. I loved the direct contrast between the two styles of architecture. It was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004 and was the first building in Australia to receive the honour, following a full restoration through the 1990’s. The building was first constructed and completed in 1880. Melbourne is fast becoming a city with old and new styles of architecture found all over it. This is a prime example of what you can expect to find. Like two parallel universes side by side. As is from camera, no post processing. • Berwick-upon-Tweed or simply Berwick is a town in the county of Northumberland and is the northernmost town in England, on the east coast at the mouth of the River Tweed. It is situated 2.5 miles (4 km) south of the Scottish border. Berwick-Upon-Tweed, the former county town of Berwickshire, had a population of 11,665 at the time of the United Kingdom Census 2001. A civil parish and town council were created in 2008. Founded during the time of the kingdom of Northumbria, which was part of the Heptarchy. The area was central to historic border war between the Kingdoms of England and Scotland for centuries; the last time it changed hands was when England reconquered it in 1482. Berwick remains a traditional market town and it also boasts some notable architectural features, in particular its defence ramparts and barrack buildings. Wikipedia EOS 1D MkIII, 17-40mm (L)
