At first I dismissed this shot, but on revisiting it I found it charming. A lot of my holiday photos were taken with planning and forethough, this shot however just presented itself I snapped it, and kept on enjoying the wonderful architecture. In showing some of my many photos to friends this was very popular so I decided to share it here.

Don’t know why, but this one is one of my favorites… I remember I thought I had been lucky to find this swimming-pool empty. Nikon d70 with Nikkor AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED

Canon 400D / Iceberg season is offically upon us for another year. This was the first Iceberg of the season for me. It was a very foggy and drizzly day, but these bergs were well worth venturing out in the weather. / / From the Northern tip of Labrador down to the eastern coast of Newfoundland, the sea that pounds and caresses these shores is nicknamed Iceberg Alley. Bergs born 10,000 years ago on the Greenland icecap dance along the coast and far out to sea, propelled unpredictably by wind and tide, tumbling, twirling, and breaking into fantastic shapes before melting in the warm waters of the gulf stream. / / An iceberg’s journey down Iceberg Alley begins once it breaks off from the edges of Greenland’s glaciers. Dropping into the ocean, it is gripped by the Labrador Current and carried through the dark ocean along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, during certain times of the year, the alley has been thick with the largest and most beautiful icebergs found anywhere in the world. They glide majestically along, alone or in groups, obscuring the horizon with their tall, jagged silhouettes. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / More in this series / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

Placed in Top Ten in You’re Accepted Group’s “Through The Fence” challenge march 24, 2009. / Featured in Live, Love, Dream February 1, 2009. / Featured in Nirvana February 1, 2009. I’ve posted the horizontal of this image previously … but decided to give the vertical a shot as well .. I like the fencing and lovely, jumbled grasses in the foreground, and although I liked the clear soft blue skies of the original, I just couldn’t help adding some lovely fluffy clouds that I had tucked away. This compilation was very easy … and if someone’s been wanting to give it a try here’s really all you do. Open both images in Photoshop, or a similar program. Do what needs to be done to your images … clone off weird spots or airplanes or what have you. Put them through levels … contrast … whatever you like. Now, you should have a base image … and something to go over or into it. In my case, the base image was the one with the clouds. By the way, I frequently shoot simple things like clouds or walls or branches or other plain things to use in compilations later on. You’d be surprised what comes in handy!! My onto / into image was the one with the barn. What I wanted to do was extract … or take out … the barn and grass and glom that onto the cloud shot. In this case, extracting the barn and the trees and grass was very easy, as the sky behind was pure, simple blue. So basically, I “selected” the blue, then hit “inverse” ... so that the highlighted area became everything BUT the sky. I then used the move tool (the little arrow thing up at the top left) and clicked on the barn and literally MOVED that section over to the layer with the clouds. Once there, I hit “free transform” which is under the Edit function … and resized the barn image to fit into the cloud image perfectly. Double click to finish off the transform and you’re basically done. Now, in this case there was still a bit of bright blue sky hiding in the leaves of the trees … so that took a bit of cloning to get rid of. Then I hit the whole top of the tree line with the blur tool to blend everything in better. I didn’t blur the top of the barn, though, as I wanted it to stand out crisp and clean from the sky. Any questions, b-mail me and I’ll try to help out!! Oh, by the way, there are a zillion ways to do everything in Photoshop … so I’m sure there are other / better ways to do this. But … this works for meeee!! The image of the barn was taken July 25, 2008 along route 220, south of Bedford, Pennsylvania in the late afternoon with the Nikon D40x, using the 18-135mm lens. The shot of the sky was taken in February of 2008 near Damascus, Maryland.

I applied a slight Orton image effect, did some dodging and burning and added some scatter brush strokes in Photoshop. The original barn image was uploaded in August.

Featured in Neighborhoods May 3, 2009. BEST VIEWED FULL SIZE! Another lovely little shop in Old Towne Ellicott City, Maryland, the architecture of which is typical of the entire town … June 10, 2008. Image taken with the Nikon D40x and the 18-135mm lens, hand-held. Shutter was at 1/200 and aperture was f/7.1. Finished off in Photoshop and hdr in Photomatix with one original jpeg image, duplicated and lightened and darkened to create three images. HDR processed in Photomatix at e.v. spacing 2. A tiny bit of local history for Ellicott City, from Wikipedia … In 1772, three Quaker brothers from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, chose the picturesque wilderness, upriver from Elk Ridge Landing (known today as Elkridge, Maryland) to establish a flour mill. John, Andrew, and Joseph Ellicott founded Ellicott’s Mills, which became one of the largest milling and manufacturing towns in the East. In 1867, a city charter was secured for Ellicott’s Mills, and the name was changed to “Ellicott City”. It was designated an historic district in 1973 and today serves as the county seat for Howard County, Maryland. Companion piece to: A Seat In The Shade

Featured in Maryland August 24, 2009. Best Viewed Full Size This is the turret of the original school building of the Glenelg Country School, located in Howard County, Maryland. The title “Dragon’s Lair” comes from the school’s mascot, the dragon. Of course now Glenelg boasts beautiful modern facilities, but somehow all the structures have been done in keeping with the atmosphere of the glorious old home you see here which housed the first classrooms over half a century ago. A wonderful, nurturing but tough academic climate, small classroom sizes, outstanding faculty and staff. And the campus itself, as you can see, is a thing of beauty!! Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens on July 26, 2009. Shutter 1/200, aperture f/7.1, exp. 0.00, iso 400.
